The Holocaust caused many hardships for the Jews. The Jews had to live through concentration camps and try to survive for multiple years, the only two options were to be liberated or be killed. The Nazis dehumanized the Jews from people to nothing more than objects. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, Eliezer and his father are brought to a concentration camp for Jews where they lose their family, go through torture, suffering, starvation, and lose their mental stability, just to survive. During the Holocaust, Jewish prisoners, along with Elie were dehumanized by the poor living conditions, being tortured, and changing their identities. One depictive scene from the book speaks about the chilling act of the hanging of a young boy that served as a warning to the Jews. “Where is He from?” he said. Here He is—He is hanging here on the gallows. . . .” This was right after discovering the boy. Additionally, Eliezer recounts the brutal treatment inflicted upon his father, including the severe beating by Nazi guards as a way of punishment. “And he began beating him with an iron bar. At first, my father simply doubled over under the blows, but then he seemed to break in two like an old tree struck by lightning.” These instances of beating, along with the many other beatings and killings in the book, serve as a stark reminder of the depths of human depravity. In “Night” Elie Wiesel vividly describes the dehumanizing effects of the Holocaust, revealing how the Jews were stripped of their identity, subjected to physical and psychological torment, and put in bad conditions.
