I don't think there could be a one-size-fits-all explination to crime. Each crime is different and each person does a crime for their own reasons. Wether that is poverty, reject, or just psychotic. Most crimes might fall under one theory but not all. No person is the same and even if you don't commit crimes it is hard to find someone who has the same views and thinking as you. Collectively, as a nation, the United States has incarcerated more juveniles with life sentences than any other nation. With this fact the arguments arise that juveniles should not be punished the same was as an adult would be but, is that really how the justice system should work? To allow a juvenile who recently robbed a store only get a slap on the wrist? Not comprehending that there are consequences for their actions and how what they have done affects the victims.
There are many theories that can be applied to different cases that have occurs in Americas history. The two theories that are choses for this paper are the trait theory and under the trait theory is psychological which is “abnormal personality and psychological traits are the key to determinant of anti-social behavior. The second theory is the Choice theory which “criminals weigh the cost and benefits and make a conscious, rational choice to commit crime” (Siegel, 2014). His findings that climate contributes to high or low crime rate is a main factor in today’s fight against crime. It is doubtful this issue will ever be settled since there are too many pros and cons to each side. However, while specialists’ dispute this, crime is not stopping. There needs to be a way, or possibly several ways, to reduce criminal activity. It is doubtful criminal activity will ever be put to an end. For instance, many individuals have a brain disorder such as insanity that affects the brain and causes a person to experience hallucinations and not know what they’re doing. In the United States over 64% of individuals who are incarcerated have some type of mental illness (Nami, 2017) which may have influenced the individual to commit the crime. When an individual goes to prison or any type of confinement the first thing officers do is get them screened to see if they encompass any mental illness and majority of the time that’s the case. Any type of damage whether small or big will trigger a person to do the wrong thing, the mind is powerful and can make a person commit horrendous acts. Also since there are fewer rehabilitation programs people being sent to prison are recidivating instead of receiving help causing a never ending cycle.
