Torah Obedience
After Joshua’s death and the death of “that whole generation”, the next generation “knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel” (Judges 2:10). Because this new generation was consistently unfaithful to the covenant that God made with them in Deuteronomy, God was furious. He says in Judges 2:20-22, “Because this nation has violated the covenant that I laid down for their forefathers and has not listened to me, 21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22 I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their forefathers did.” This is a perfect example of the Deuteronomic History emphasis of Torah obedience, which this module defines as “for ancient Israel to enjoy God’s good gift of the land, the ancient Israelites were expected to be faithful to the covenant that God established with them….” Since the Israelites were not faithful to the covenant, God made their lives extremely difficult by repeatedly subjecting them to serve unjust kings in the land that was mean...
Let’s go back to biblical times for just a moment. Fromm explains that during the time Adam and Eve reside in the Garden of Eden, they live in innocence and harmony. This harmony is disrupted by the “Act of Disobedience,” which is labeled in biblical terms as the “original sin.” This act of disobedience describes the first moral flaw, and the consequential corruption of mankind. By disobeying God, Adam and Eve take the first steps towards independence and freedom. This helps them reach their spiritual and intellectual capacity. After Adam and Eve leave the Garden of Eden, they create a new harmony referred to as “the end of days” (622). To the prophets, man is right to disobey; this allows him to think for himself. In many ways, parents encourage kids to think for themselves. By simply picking out their clothes or packing their own lunch, children move away from following their parents, and towards the formation of their own identities...
According to this version, God punishes only the Israelites. Not only did God not punish Moses, but He promised to magnify him by remaining faithful (Num 14: 11 – 12). It is true that Moses had to die from something, but he does not just simply die. It is seen that “rather than dying a normal death, the result of natural decay, Moses disappears into the mountain to die, alone, full of vigor of life…. Moses dies. And that is that.” His death can be compared with that of Elijah 's. "The legend of Elijah 's death moves in the same direction, although with markedly more intense drama…. It cuts short work as yet unfinished. But in the heroic death of Moses or Elijah death carries a confirmation of a life 's work, and affirmation of God 's presence." Thus, the death of Moses was due to an act of solidarity. If the nation he had liberated, founded and guided should die in the desert, Moses had to follow the same path and accompany it to its tragic end. That is why, while the book of Numbers states that Moses was going to get into the Promised Land, Deuteronomy says no, because God decided that Moses had to follow Israel’s
Israelite history from about 1200 to 1000 BC is marked by the leadership of the Twelve Judges. The Book of Judges does not give a chronological account of the time between the settlement of Canaan and the rise of the monarchy, but instead tells a series of short accounts of the Judge’s accomplishments. The Twelve Judges served the Hebrew people as tribal leaders, military leaders, arbiters of disputes, and enliveners of faith. After the death of Joshua, the Israelites fell into a cycle of sin, calamity, repentance, and deliverance. The Judges emerged when the Israelites began to fall away from their core religious beliefs by worshipping false Gods. Each time that happened, God sent a Judge to save the Israelites from destruction.
How could a loving God command the killing of the Canaanites? In order to be able to answer this question there are certain causes that need to be considered and that are very important to take into consideration. Let’s look at the situation from God’s point of view in the matter of the destruction of the Canaanite race. Most of my evidence will be found within the Bible and historical record.

God rewards or punishes Jewish people based on whether they obey or disobey his will. In parts of the Old Testament, however, God does show mercy or forgiveness, and in later interpretations God’s laws such as the Ten Commandments are followed
Moses is the speaker now, and he says that God made a covenant with them at Horeb. Additionally, he says that last time they would not go up the mountain because they were afraid of the fire. Then, Moses repeats the Decalogue to the Israelites, and he explains that they were written on two stone tablets. Here the third commandment differs from Exodus. Instead of Remember the Sabbath, it states “Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy as the Lord your God commanded you.” (Deut 5:12). In comparison, observe has a more commanding connotation. Furthermore, at the end of the first line of the commandment the text adds as “your God commanded you” (Deut. 5:12,). This sets a more domineering tone and implies that the Israelites will not follow unless commanded. Another key distinction occurs when the texts are describing why one must follow the Sabbath commandment. The text reminds the Israelites that they were once slaves in Egypt and that “God brought [them] out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm” (Deut 5:15). Here God is guilt-tripping the Israelites into following the Sabbath by reminding them of what God did for them in their relationship. Thus, it seems that in Deuteronomy God is attempting to invoke fear in order to convince the Israelites to follow. Nonetheless, Deuteronomy is not only based on the Israelites following God out of fear. It also states that they will change their reasoning to aspire to be similar to God, like Exodus. For instance, when asked what would they tell their children when asked why they follow the Decalogue, they should say that if we follow it “as he has commanded us, we will be in the right.” (Deut 6:25). This indicates that after they followed out of fear that they changed their reasoning to be aspirational. Moses concludes with how they should follow the commandments

God's reconciliation with the people of Israel is the underlying essence of Chapter ten. It attempts to depict and explain the omniscient components of God and his mercy. Moses is set forth in order to retrieve and renew the tablets of the covenant. Moses was told, "…cut two tablets of stone like the former; then come up to the mountain with me." He carved two tablets and brought them before the Lord. The manual labor involved can represent how man created the basis for the law of man; each of us answering to a higher power, "come up the mountain to me." When God inscribes the commandments on the tablets in verse two, it is evident that God possesses humanistic qualities such as forgiveness; he forgives the people for breaking the laws of the first two tablets. The book of Judges is the sequel to Joshua. It is the seventh book of the Old Testament. It recounts stories and events from the death of the hebrew leader and prophet Joshua to the birth of the hebrew Samuel. That is roughly, from the end of the Israelite conquest of Canan in the 13th Century B.C to the begining of the monarchy in the 11 th century B.C. It tells about the hebrews from Joshua’s Death to the time of Samuel. It was written in about 550 BC, on tablets named the Ras Shamra tablets. The Ras Shamra tablets where later discovered in the early 20th Century, even though the stories and acountings of the judges where already known and written. The book of Judges belongs to a specific historical tradition which is called the Deuteronomic history. The author of the book of Judges, was in exile in Babylonia. While in exile he was deeply concerned with foreign domination. So he wrote many of his stories on the migration of the tribe of Dan to the North and the sins of the Benjamites. The author emphasized that Israel was being influenced by foreign powers and the loss of freedom and prosperity. Recurring throughout the book is the stereotyped formula: "The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the lord." Then after each period or subjection the author introduces another formula: " But when the people of Israel cried the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people. Through-out the book, the book of judges tells about prophets, rulers and influencial people such as: Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tilian and Samson. There are also many more minor people.
Anytime I have gone to church we talk about the new testament, and exodus showed me how the new testament God and old testament God are very different. In exodus God seems more like a jealous tyrant, smiting those who do not believe in him with plagues that kill and harm the people of Egypt. With the last plague even killing the first born sons of the non-hebrews of Egypt. In churches I’ve gone to today they teach how forgiving God is for any digressions you have, and even say that doubt in faith is normal and will only make your faith that much stronger once it is gone. This just seems like an entirely different religion than the one displayed in exodus. This is carried through even more in the movie exodus as God is portrayed as a child. This portrayal, in my opinion, fits the actions and decisions he makes throughout the story.
Even though God saw people as evil, he wanted to show his grace. He wanted to separate certain people in the world as His chosen people. “He wanted a chosen people: 1. To whom He might entrust the Holy Scriptures. 2. To be His witness to the other nations. 3. Through whom the promised Messiah could come” (Mears 47). This covenant is made between God and Abram. This covenant marks the beginning history of Israel, God’s chosen people.

The book of Judges is a very deep and dark book that shows the disobedience of Gods people and in some instances the commanders in which he sent to command his people. This book is very eye opening to some of the things that took place in the Old Testament that is not talked about in the Church today. Which in some cases is understandable because for many people it is simply to deep to understand what Gods overall reasoning was for this time. It’s a book of the bible that honestly takes several read through to partially understand what the purpose was for this time. The most reoccurring theme that seemed to take place was that whenever peace was achieved it always lead to the people of God doing evil things which where displeasing the father.
The human mind is always changing. It has been known that change is inevitable, but what if there was something forcing this change? Society’s struggles are becoming more challenging, forcing the human mind to focus on one thing: obedience. Obedience merges a group together, all believing in or participating in one idea. This is very evident as the soldiers in A Few Good Men all have the same agenda to follow orders, regardless of what that order may be-that is their code. However, this obedience prohibits individuals to participate in their own unique actions and thoughts. If people can’t think for themselves, then the obedience to the higher power is what drives human minds to change in a similar way. As today’s terrorist attacks and wars
