Introduction:
Periodisation is simply a process of dividing the annual training plan into a series of manageable phases. Each phase can then target a specific or series of attributes to be developed within a designated period of time (Bonetti, 2005). Almost all countries and teams involved with sport, all agree that Periodisation has a huge part to play in sport as It help athletes and teams reach their peak performance and remain as injury free as possible. These pieces of ancient literature give us the names of Galen and Philostratus. The roman philosopher Claudius Aelius Galenus in his work The Preservation of Health showed us one of the first categorisation of exercise, which can be perceived as the predecessor of modern periodisation (Issurin, 2010). In the work by Galenus his exercises were sequenced into 3 sections ‘‘exercises with strength but without speed’’, ‘‘speed apart from strength and force’’, ‘‘intense exercises combining strength and speed (Gnomon, 1957) . A Greek scientist Philostratus also gave us an example of annual periodisation where athletes have a compulsory 10-month training program of purposeful training followed by a month of centralised periodisation in the city Elis prior to the olympic games at the time (Drees, 1968). This central periodisation block and can be thought of in today’s methods as practice camps where the national team’s come together and train. The guide set down by Philostratus shows a sequence of small medium and large training loads in a 4-day training cycle. Football academies are environments in which promising footballers are trained and developed with the goal of becoming elite senior athletes (Crust, Nesti & Littlewood, 2010). English academies operate a dual sporting goal according to Isoard-Gautheur, Guillet-Ducas & Duda (2013), in which they aim to teach and help athlete’s master skills, but also have an obligation to ensure enough athletes break through into the senior team. Academies train athletes from the ages of 10 to 18 on a part time format, using elite coaches and elite competition between other academies to enhance their player’s ability (Crust, Nesti & Littlewood, 2010). Academies are very much utilised as a progressive filter, which begins with a large number of athletes at the youngest age, with progressively smaller numbers of athletes in each age group as age increases (Crust, Nesti & Littlewood, 2010). Whether an athlete is retained for the next year is subject to player evaluation by coaches and directors within the academy, thus requiring athletes to demonstrate competency as well as achieving success (Isoard-Gautheur, Guillet-Ducas & Duda, 2012; Crust, Nesti & Littlewood, 2010).

When completing an exercise a person is expecting results that day, during or post workout. Training is a long-term process that creates noticeable and physical results over a span of weeks, even months and years. Training involves planning with preparation for the training duration and progress towards a goal. The desire to win and be better than the competition is essentially important for professional and collegiate athletes. These athletes take training and preparation for a competition to a new level of determination and commitment. For the last two years, I have been working with the University of Oklahoma’s softball team as their student athletic trainer. I attend every practice, workout, and all of their games. As the student athletic trainer, I help with assessing their injuries, with treatment and rehabilitation of their injuries as well as injury prevention. I have watched these women go through some strenuous workouts and have seen their improvements. Some of the girls have asked about taking CrossFit classes or other workout programs during winter and summer breaks. Our strength coach advised against taking the CrossFit classes that he has not specifically approved. He

Periodization, training in cycles of gradually increasing intensity, began with the work of Soviet sports scientist Dmitri Matveyev in the early 1960s. Elite athletes, Olympic weightlifters, swimmers, and track and field performers have used it all over the world to an ever-increasing degree since that time. American Olympic lifters and power lifters have been using periodization for a long time for example Frank Zane (Ripper 3, Fleck, Steven 34). Periodization provides a method by which the plateau can be avoided. One of the problems with most training programs is that it is the same day in and day out. Intensity, rep range, etc tend to be varying constant. However, the body is extremely adaptable and will eventually stop responding to a certain exercise scheme regardless of the intensity. Periodization provides a method of training that over rides the bodies mechanism by keeping them it plateauing.

However, these methods have encountered a consistent set of barriers including overtraining ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). Athletic staleness and burnout is a big problem for many of today’s athletes whether they are at the amateur or professional level. The good thing about this problem that ends up in total and complete physical and emotional exhaustion is that it can be recognized when it is taking place. It can also be treated if the recognition comes at too late of a stage of the onset of staleness and burnout.
