Ex Machina (2015) Cast: Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac Corey Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno Director: Alex Garland Synopsis: Ex Machina is about a coder named Caleb Smith (Gleeson) who wins the workplace lottery to spend time with his brilliant boss for a week at his remote estate. When Caleb gets to his house, he is told to interact with an A.I robot in a series of conversations and report back to his boss, Nathan (Isaac). Nathan wonders if Ava (Vikander ), the artificial intelligence robot’s personality is equal or greater to that of a normal human being. The first encounter between Caleb and Ava in particular, shows how much these actors can convey only using body language and few words. Using grey and red lights in darker hues makes this movie seem very mysterious and intriguing. The editing flowed nicely , the set designing was excellently done but the costumes would have to be one of my favourite things in the entire film. Ava’s costume in particular, was intricate and you could tell a lot of time and effort went into making it. There were a few times in the film that felt a bit drawn out but the thrilling scenes kept my attention and I couldn’t wait for what followed next. One thing I wished they did was elaborate more at the start. The start felt a little bit rushed and it would have been better if they put some scenes about why they were having a staff lottery and more about the main character Caleb. At first, I was a little bit unclear about the storyline but as it progressed it made more and more sense. Although the film had minor flaws, Ex Machina is a powerful, thought provoking film and definitely a film you need to
