“It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.” (Stephen Hawking). Evolution versus Creation is a debate going on since Charles Darwin first sparked the idea in his origin of species. Evolution is the theory that life started off as bacteria; Creation is the belief that a god or a group of gods created the Earth and life as it is present day. However, there are multiple types of both sides. There is theistic and atheistic views on Evolution, and there are many religions, that each tell a different creation story. Evolution, while in its current state may not be 100% accurate, it has evidence backing it up and no evidence disputing it, so it should be considered fact.

It doesn’t require faith at all. As stated earlier, it is just traits that descend over time. We all know that we inherit genes from our parents. Now evolution is just that. Maybe someone at some point got a mutation. This mutation allowed them to survive better than the others. So, their offspring were the ones who survived because they had this mutation. Now, if it was a mutation that made them worse off, then their offspring would not have survived at all. This is how creatures evolve to make them better off. Scientists are actively working to improve what we know about evolution. Meanwhile, the Bible was written many years ago, and has been wrong before. Children are taught in school to use evidence that is recent. Yet people trust this old scripture that has been proven wrong. Galileo’s discovery that Earth is not the center of the Universe, for example. Now, just because one thing in it is wrong, doesn’t mean that everything in it is. However, because of that mistake, it questions the validity of the rest. The other things should be questioned and not just accepted. Children are also taught in school to use evidence to back up claims. Most religious documents have no evidence whatsoever. Quite often times they are written in the form of a hypothesis; an explanation of an observable phenomenon. They were never proven. Many people claim that evolution is just a theory, therefore it may not be correct. No, a theory is an analysis of facts and putting them together to make an idea. Gravity, is a theory, but I don’t see people (who aren’t part of the Flat Earth Society) actively trying to get people to stop believing it. Only a few school distracts have approved the teaching of evolution because it has more senitific evidence than creationism to prove that it is true. According to a new Gallup poll, just 39% of Americans believe in evolution. The Gallup polls also show that those Americans with higher education believe in the theory of evolution as opposed to those with only high school diplomas. The polls found that 74% Americans with post-graduate degrees believe in evolution theory compared to 21% of Americans with only high school diplomas. The Gallup polls suggest that the belief in the theory of evolution is associated with education. Teaching of evolution has several issues. One of the main issue is that it is unfair to some students with a background of Christianity. Christians believe in Creationism, meaning God created the whole world or if not, most of the world. Darwin's theory of Evolution is complete contradictory of this. In the Bible, it is stated that God made humans in His image while Darwin's theory says that Humans evolved from monkeys. It is basically proving that God, does not exist, violating the first amendment, Freedom of Belief. The first amendment states "..respecting the establishment of religion..." When Christian students listen and are forced to learn the theory of Evolution, it is restricting them to worship without obstacles and is therefore, disrespecting the establishment of religion by defying the existence of God. This argument is clearly false. In order for a scientific theory to become widely accepted by the majority of the scientific world, it must be supported with facts and evidence. In a recent Gallup Poll, 55% of scientists, a majority, believed in evolution with no divine intervention. An additional 40% of scientists believed in evolution with divine intervention; only 5% of scientists believe that the earth was created by a divine power in the last 10,000 years. However, the public opinion is nearly the direct opposite. 46% of those polled believed the earth was created by a divine power in the last 10,000 years; furthermore, 40% of those polled believe in evolution with divine intervention. Only 9% of those polled believed in evolution with no divine aid. The disparity between scientists and the public is too great to be ignored; despite the overwhelmingly scientific evidence, many people still do not fully support, or believe in the theory of evolution. There is also a clear correlation between belief in evolution and belief in God. While the polls attempting to record the religious beliefs of scientists are not always reliable, it is true that the percent of scientists that believe in the divine is much lower than that of the general public. In 1859, Charles Darwin published his groundbreaking Origin of Species, which would introduce the seminal theory of evolution to the scientific community. Over 150 years later, the majority of scientists have come to a consensus in agreement with this theory, citing evidence in newer scientific research. In an average high school biology classroom, one may imagine an instructor that has devoted much of his life to science and a predominantly Christian class of about twenty-five students. On the topic of evolution, one of the students might ask, “Why would God have taken the long route by creating us through billion years of evolution?” while another student may claim “The Book of Genesis clearly says that the earth along with all living creatures was created in just six days, and Biblical dating has proven that the earth is only 6000 years old.” Finally a third student interjects with the remark “maybe the Bible really is just a book, and besides, science has basically already proven that evolution happened, and is continuing to happen as we speak.”

In the history of science vs. religion there have been no issues more intensely debated than evolution vs. creationism. The issue is passionately debated since the majority of evidence is in favor of evolution, but the creation point of view can never be proved wrong because of religious belief. Human creation breaks down into three simple beliefs; creation theory, naturalistic evolution theory, and theistic evolution theory. The complexities of all three sides create a dilemma for what theory to support among all people, religious and non-religious.

The Bible and the written laws of nature are like two different books. These books are written and read in completely different languages. The Bible was written in the view of people of that time; whereas, science laws are constantly written and changed for modern world. Creationism is the belief that an all powerful being created the world, and how it works was all to his design. The main example of creationism will be Christianity. The topic I choose for my persuasive speech is about the debate of Nature vs nurture, that been going on for decades arguing between what determines one’s character traits.
