Everything That Rises Must Converge There is an absolute theme of integration in Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O Connor. Through the experience of reading this short story, we can depict the characters past experiences. There are two incompatible personalities in the passage, Mrs. Chestney, the mother, which represents the transition from the old South, and Julian, the son, who represents the transition of the new South. Due to the fact that Mrs. Chestney was the granddaughter of a governor, it purely conveys that she ranked high in wealth and position. This purely expresses her growing experience in a southern manner and to behave in a gentile southern manner. In relation to integration, Mrs. Chestney dismisses the plight of blacks with a southern response, "They should rise, yes, but on their own side of their fence". This attitude most likely resulted from being taught to talk this way all her life. Although she makes thoughtless remarks, her genuine affection for her childhood nurse Caroline, shows that she has no real malice towards the black race. There is a repetition of the words "meet yourself coming and going", in which she implicates her kind, as the party responsible for the tension between black and whites. In fact, what she really means is that, "we dominated this race of people", and feels threatened by it. Also, Mrs. Chestney truly meets her match when the black woman who boards the bus with her son refuses her charity. Julian becomes overjoyed when he notices that the womans hat is identical to his mothers. Thus, Mrs. Chestney fears materialize- she truly "meets herself coming and going". Mrs. Chestney doesnt open her mind to face reality, but instead is looking for a deeper message than what is offered in Julians sermon on race relations. She wants to return to the sweet smelling mansion of her childhood that she views as a "safe heaven" where she will be welcomed. She regresses to childhood calling out, "Tell Grandpa to come get me," Tell Caroline to come get me." This purely indicates that the mother is still living in the past. In opposition though, Julian is obsessed with the idea of integration, and thus indicates that he was brought up completely different than his mother. He experiences life and race relations completely different as opposed to his mother. For example, "he daydreams about making black friends, and even bringing home a black lover." This statement is impossible, mainly because of his refusal to deal with the outside world and "the general idiocy of his fellow." "Julian lives" in the inner compartment of his mind safe from any kind of penetration from without." His view of the world is too cynical and ironically every attempt he makes with the blacks fails. What can be conclude of Julian is that he had an absence of heart, which blatantly depicts his past, but when his mother dies, the love that he was unable to express comes out when he cries, "Darling, sweetheart, wait." In conclusion, Mrs. Chestney was trying to make the past present and that caused many conflicts between her son and herself. Since she was obsessed with her past way of living, she was trying to convince her son to follow her idiosyncrasy, but Julian was following his mind, not his mothers heart.

I want to start off this analysis essay of the book, “Separate Pasts,” by author MeltonMcLaurin, That it was really well written account of a world that for me, a 21st century youngwomen from a more open community, is completely foreign, and honestly disconnected. Thevery human connection between the reality of the segregated south and the author did allot forme to come to a better grasp of how racism in the south persisted. The fact that he lived in the eraand gave us the theme of change vs tradition throughout the book, gives me an insight of boththe past and present. The author Melton McLaurin reflects on his pasts by recalling his memoriesof growing up in Wade, North Carolina his hometown. During the time, McLaurin is in thesegregated south working in his grandfather’s store; there he starts to observe how he interactsbetween white community and black community, and how each ones’ lifestyles are worlds apart,even though they live in the same town. In the book, McLaurin also describes the influentialblack people in the community of Wade, North Carolina that influenced his views of racism andsegregation. He is teaching us more about the southern history because he actually lived it, thenmost historians that give facts then what people actually thought and felt in that time. The transition of being a black man in a time just after slavery was a hard one. A black man had to prove himself at the same time had to come to terms with the fact that he would never amount to much in a white dominated country. Some young black men did actually make it but it was a long and bitter road. Most young men fell into the same trappings as the narrator’s brother. Times were hard and most young boys growing up in Harlem were swept off their feet by the onslaught of change. For American blacks in the middle of the twentieth century, racism is another of the dark forces of destruction and meaninglessness which must be endured. Beauty, joy, triumph, security, suffering, and sorrow are all creations of community, especially of family and family-like groups. They are temporary havens from the world''s trouble, and they are also the meanings of human life.
As mentioned earlier, the black community became a singular people and although unification can be a positive idea, with unification comes division, which leads to seclusion. This is because unification is created by a group sharing a common trait, however, there will always be those that do not have this trait and that is where division occurs and eventually seclusion is created. For this reason, Steele encourages his audience to move beyond “race-as-identity”. He explains that individualization can be beneficial because it prevents general associations from being formed and without these associations people will feel less compelled to conform to them. She brings light to an issue that divided her family from her father, his “obsession” with fixing up the house. She states, "I grew to resent the way my father treated his furniture like children, and his children like furniture" (14). She believes her father was detached, living his life through restoring old furniture and fixing up the family home, leaving little attention for the family that lived there. The characters are torn between who they are and who they need to be. Racial passing further perpetrates discrimination within American society, especially within the black community. Mr. Ryder’s actions further perpetrates the notion of race as a social and cultural construction. Mr. Ryder does not want to be accepted as black and he must live up to his principle through disassociation with the black culture. Mr. Ryder’s hope for a better future meant erasing his “blackness” and identify with his “whiteness”. Eliza’s narration of her slave life awaken his moral conscious. When considering The Souls of Black Folk, the readers in the Twentieth-Century America can draw direct parallels to events, stories, and the stories of those in the past to today. The chapter "Of the Coming Of John" helps us interpret the present inequities in educational opportunities. There is also resentment for affirmative action that has been spoken by the dominant white male that reflects the court decision on affirmative action of modern time. The reader can contemplate the passage of Du Bois' essay to substitute the words "colored" and "Negro" with African-American, Nigger, illegal alien, Mexican, inner-city dwellers, and other meanings that articulate people that are not listed as a majority.
“Everything that Rises Must Converge” also contains two supposedly superior characters, Julian and his mother. A main theme in this novel is the influence of family relationships in the quest for individual identity. Our family or lack thereof, as children, ultimately influences the way we feel as adults, about ourselves and about others. The effects on us mold our personalities and as a result influence our identities. This story shows us the efforts of struggling black families who transmit patterns and problems that have a negative impact on their family relationships. These patterns continue to go unresolved and are eventually inherited by their children who will also accept this way of life as this vicious circle continues.
Myra, who is dying of illness, escapes the confinement of her stuffy, dark apartment. She refuses to succumb to death in an insubordinate manner. By leaving the apartment and embracing open space, Myra rejects the societal pressure to be a kept woman. Myra did not want to die “like this, alone with [her] mortal enemy” (Cather, 85). Myra wanted to recapture the independence she sacrificed when eloping with Oswald. In leaving the apartment, Myra simultaneously conveys her disapproval for the meager lifestyle that her husband provides for her and the impetus that a woman needs a man to provide for her at all. Myra chose to die alone in an open space – away from the confinement of the hotel walls that served as reminders of her poverty and the marriage that stripped her of wealth and status. She wished to be “cremated and her ashes buried ‘in some lonely unfrequented place in the mountains, or in the sea” (Cather, 83). She wished to be alone once she died, she wanted freedom from quarantining walls and the institution of marriage that had deprived her of affluence and happiness. Myra died “wrapped in her blankets, leaning against the cedar trunk, facing the sea…the ebony crucifix in her hands” (Cather, 82). She died on her own terms, unconstrained by a male, and unbounded by space that symbolized her socioeconomic standing. The setting she died in was the complete opposite of the space she had lived in with Oswald: It was free space amid open air. She reverted back to the religious views of her youth, symbolizing her desire to recant her ‘sin’ of leaving her uncle for Oswald, and thus abandoning her wealth. “In religion , desire was fulfillment, it was the seeking itself that rewarded”( Cather, 77), it was not the “object of the quest that brought satisfaction” (Cather, 77).
