In order to have the results that you desire, you must be willing to give 100 percent. Mike Sellers of PreGameSpeeches in his speech Give 100 Percent asserts that giving your all will get you the result that you want. However, he also says that it won’t be easy and will take a lot of work. He supports this claim by first using anaphora to emphasize that you must give your all, logos to show that it would not be an easy task, and by finally using ethos to motivate people tdo better. Sellers purpose is to motivate athletes to give there all in order to achieve their goals Mike Sellers begins his Speech by first using pathos. He establishes pathos through his use of anaphoras and exclamatory sentences to emphasize the need to give 100 percent. Throughout the paragraph, Sellers repeats “…everything…” to exaggerate the need to give everything a person has and not save anything for later. “Do not save anything for later, do not relax, do not take a break to catch your breath…” the repetition of “Do not…” also is uses to exaggerate that breaks should not be taken until that person know that they gave everything they have. “It takes a lot of heart, passion, determination, drive, energy, and willpower.” He tells the readers that “…there is going to be pain, sweat, and adversity.” He is not sugar coating anything and letting the readers know the truth behind giving 100 percent. Another fact that he states is that there will be times where the person will doubt themselves and want to find the easy way out. “You will wonder if you can do it, and you will try to talk yourself out of giving it all. You are going to see ‘easy ways out.’” Sellers uses of emotion when he says “It’s going to hurt!” is to emphasize that it will not be easy. He says this to appeal to the readers
Pathos – I think it is quite easy to see how Carson uses pathos in her book. Half of the excerpt we received seems to be dedicated to this topic. The first chapter is charged with emotions and communal values as Carson builds a kind of utopian nature scene and then destroys it right before the reader’s eyes. I think this dramatization communicates the powerful message intended, but it does make me wonder how different the feeling of this chapter would be if she used a real world example. Perhaps the pathos would have been stronger because it would let the reader connect to real people and a concrete place. Perhaps the pathos would be weaker because it would not allow Carson to describe all the disastrous effects that she wanted to in such a vivid way. Perhaps the strength of this chapter depends on the reader’s preference.
Tom knows that his project can wait, but he has to have it done so his boss can read it over the weekend. The fact that his work couldn’t wait until he got back from the movies shows what an impatient person he is. When Tom is out on the ledge retrieving his paper, he is forced to be very patient and to take things one step at a time.
John F Kennedy delivered one of the best speeches on January 20, 1961.His inauguration speech was very powerful and it gathered the attention of every single person in the nation. It uses a strong appeal to pathos, ethos and logos. Kennedy was the youngest president to be in office. He got his degree from Harvard and later on joined the navy. He wrote “ profiles in courage” which has received one of the most recognized awards, the Pulitzer Prize. This speech had a lot of positive sides to it, but one of the most important things was that it gave him a good look from the outside. The inaugural address was written to let the citizens of America know that they could change this country for the better. It assured all voters
An advertisement is a form of public writing in which the author uses writing strategies as a way to catch the attention of a reader and to persuade that reader to purchase what he or she is promoting. In order to create an effective advertisement, the author relies on the product’s credibility, uses reasons to convince the reader to buy what he/she is promoting, and attempts to appeal to the reader based on emotion. A way in which this can be achieved is through using three components of writing known as ethos, pathos and logos. As an example to illustrate how these strategies can be used as an effective method of persuasion, I have chosen to analyze an advertisement produced by a travel agency. In the ad, the author’s attempt is to use logos and pathos as his primary means of persuasion but touches on all three components of writing as a method of luring the reader into choosing Texas as the primary choice for a vacation destination. The author’s intent is to rely on this location to represent the travel agency as a source for planning the vacation.
On the third Monday in January, we celebrate a man who helped change the course of history in the way people treat others who are different than them. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American clergyman and civil rights leader for who was made famous by the glorious speech “I Have a Dream”. (Norton 1152) In this speech, he spoke of a future where Caucasians and African Americans would no longer be segregated and to not be judged by the color of our skin but to be known together as equal. During his speech, whether he did it purposely or accidently, he used rhetorical devices to help deliver his message to his audience. In the speech, Dr. King used ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to his audience in an ethical, logical and emotional
In the beginning of the speech Barack Obama reflects back to where his parents and grandparents came from and what they did as their occupation. Obama shows pathos, logos and ethos many times throughout his 2004 keynote speech. He also spoke on why his mother and father gave him the name that they gave him. By doing so, Barack Obama showed pathos throughout the speech and got his audience to know him a bit before pursuing the Democratic Party to vote for John Kerry. He appeals to his audience by mentioning that his parents are both passed away, and from the look of things that did not stop him from standing where he was that day with pride and sadness:
Steve Jobs is trying to say that you should live every day like it is your last. He knew his life had value to him and his family. He felt like life was worth living even though once in a while a hard choice would come along to toughen his life. Making a choice is very hard, but when making a choice it should be one that you will not regret later in life. Making choices is one of the hardest things in life so you must see all the good and all the bad to the outcome of your options. Live everyday like it is your last. Ebert says that life is a very precious thing. Hamlet wants to die, but him not knowing what is on the other side scares so he decides to live. Even though Ebert had to get surgery, he got through it and learned to still live his life with no regrets.
As Arnold Palmer once said, "I've always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me.
Prompt #1. What are some of the ways this film trailer goes about evoking pathos?
Sir Robinson utilized Pathos most effectively within the TED Talk. He did make himself credible (Ethos) by establishing that he used to be a professor and he connects with the education system; created the logos by reminding everyone why they were there – to discuss education and its effects on children (Shea, 18). Starting ith the point of the school system today creates future university professors provided a pictorial idea of the purpose of modern school. The use of stories the audience could relate and visualize provided the pathos.

The start of the 2002 track season found me concerned with how I would perform. After a disastrous bout with mononucleosis ended my freshmen track season, the fear of failure weighed heavily on my mind. I set a goal for myself in order to maintain focus and to push myself like nothing else would. My goal for my sophomore track season was to become a state champion in the 100 meter hurdles. I worked hard everyday at practice and went the extra mile, like running every Sunday, to be just that much closer to reaching my goal. The thought of standing highest on the podium in the center of the field, surrounded by hundreds of spectators, overcame my thoughts of complaining every time we had a hard workout. When I closed my eyes, I pictured myself waiting in anticipation as other competitors names were called out, one by one, until finally, the booming voice announced over the loudspeaker, "...and in first place, your 2002 100 meter hurdle champion, from Hotchkiss, Connie Dawson." It was visions like these that drove me to work harder everyday.
I consider Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 to be one of the most effective speeches. He uses mechanics of speech to craft a well-rounded speech that is crowned by his use of rhetorical devices. Jobs gives relevant and fundamental knowledge of his life and experiences with his rhetorical approach. In his speech to the Stanford’s graduation class, he tells different stories of love, loss, discovery and difficulty he faced in his life to encourage new graduates as they continue to mature in life. He encourages students to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by failures they might experience in life.
Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. A leader is someone who sets direction in an effort or task and influences or motivates people to follow that direction. The power point presentation explains leadership is the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context.
“Changing your perspective is a very valuable tool for understanding a situation better and avoiding false view” (Shifting Your Perspective). To change the perspective of ones mind, helps them break down a bad situation, and analyzes the possible ways to act out, help gain a feeling of how another person might feel, and ways to become a better problem solver. “Negative emotions give birth to negative reactions” (Solarin). As this quote represents, one acts how one feels, and if the individual has a different mindset, their mind would be matured, and they will have the ability to think deeply about the way they should act. There are a few steps to help the process of thinking positive, (1) spend time with positive people, (2) take responsibility for ones behavior, (3) contribute to the community, (4) read positive and inspirational material, (5) recognize and replace negative thoughts, (6) create a daily gratitude list (Morin). Something that is common amongst athletes is that they try to think in an “all-or-nothing” (Melemis) feel the need to be perfect all the time, and if it does not go perfect, they then think they failed. “The emotion you feel at any. Given time determines your perspective at that time. So, in order to see the positive side of any negative situation, you need to first change your emotion from the negative to the positive” (Solarin). In this case,
