Food is an important part of who we are and where we have come from. In many cases it represents important things like culture, religion, history, and tradition. In addition for immigrants it provides comfort and a sense of closeness to where they came from. Moving to a different country where the way of life is completely different, it's nice to have something you're used to. In the book Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, ethnic food is often displayed as one of the most important things in the lives of the immigrants. For Muslims, the absence of food in daylight hours is an important part of religion. Itar occurs right after sunset and is a small meal or snack that's purpose is to break the day's fasting. The Sahur is the light meal or dinner eaten as the main course, it is very important not to overeat during this meal. Many become sick or overeat and end up with other problems during Ramadan, but it is such an important religious holiday that all good Muslims must participate. By taking away food during the day, it makes the participants of Ramadan appreciate their meals more when they do come. Especially with our new president, and all the barriers, Muslims that do immigrate to the United States will be wanting all the comfort and routine possible. Things like Fasting for Ramadan and breaking the fast in a way they're used to is necessary for their religion, mental health, and comfort. The transition to the United States while being Muslim has many hardships that can do a number on any immigrants confidence and mental wellbeing. A night of Ramadan can help make these immigrants feel at home and help with any anxiety they are experiencing. If an immigrant from America were to go to a place like Saudi Arabia, they would want to eat food they're used to during the stressful transition. In addition to that they would probably want to stay in touch with their roots by celebrating our important Holidays like Thanksgiving. In Lavanya Ramanathan’s Washington Post article published in 2015 titled “Why everyone should stop calling immigrant food ‘ethnic’”, she discusses about people’s preconceptions on the type of food that should be labelled ethnic. Ashlie Stevens also touched on a similar topic in her Guardian article published in 2015 titled “Stop thinking and just eat: when ‘food adventuring’ trivializes culture”. She talks about how people assume that just by eating food from a certain culture, they are able relate to the culture as a whole. Both authors acknowledge the importance of appreciating authentic cuisines, but takes different approaches to convince the audience. Colombia is famous for many types of cuisine. In America, different states/areas are known for different types of food. For example, the coastline has great seafood and the south has awesome comfort food. Colombia is divided into 32 departments, or country subdivisions. Each area has unique dishes that reflect their department.
I was told from a young age the easiest way to get in touch with your cultural heritage is through food. Many good memories and cultural traditions are passed down via food. Food is a way of connecting people to each other, bringing up good memories from the past. Food has a way of healing old wounds and making people happier. You have a sense of pride knowing you are connected to your culture through the use of food. However there are times when you question your cultural food choices, particularly if you haven’t grown up on certain dishes.

As a child I remember my mom preparing Sunday dinner Saturday afternoon. I was told it took time to prepare everything. Then come Sunday dinner after church we had some of the biggest meal placed before us. Mac and cheese, collard greens, cornbread that looked like pound cake, pork chops, fried chicken, etc. As I got older I asked for some of those recipes and she could never answer what all I needed to do she showed me. Her main concern was I loved what I was cooking and to cook to please others. I guess that explained all the salt, pepper, and other heavy ingredients. Pollan states that food is not just a necessity to survive, it has a greater meaning to life. Pollan explains how food can cause us happiness and health by connecting us to our family and culture. Warren Belasco, in “Why Study Food”, supports Pollan’s idea that food is something social and cultural. In Belasco’s description of a positive social encounter food is included, whether it involves a coffee date with a colleague or a dinner date with a loved one. Belasco states that food forms our identity and brings our society together.
Michael Twitty is a food writer and culinary historian best known for preparing, preserving and promoting African American food ways and its origins in Africa. He emphasizes how African food culture has made a great impact on the American South. His cooking helped him to learn about his identity and culture. He describes “identity cooking” a way to better understand him and his culture as a Jewish-African American. Food is one of human beings favorite addiction. From the arepas, to arroz con coco (coconut rice) there are many different platters from my cultural background. Being Colombian and eating Colombian almost every day brings me closer to these aspects from my culture. The way I feel connected to my Colombian culture is through its food.
