(The important aspects of food related to a religion with which you are familiar)
Food plays a very important role in every religion and culture. Good nutrition is a great symbol of healthy food/diet. In order to keep ourselves healthy, it is very important to watch what we are eating. Food habits come from parents, which later on developed according to the environment. Food is one of the ways where humans describe themselves as cultured. Food is the most significant segment of our lives. Different types of food explain verities of the belief that we have in all over the world. Ones’ food discipline and choice, tells about which culture/religion they belong to. Food, Religion,

Just like any other religion they avoided overeating and unhealthy food. People in Sikh religion follow stricken vegetarian diet, as they believe non-vegetarian is spiritually harmful. They believed eating meat causes distraction during meditation and concentration. Meditation is a necessity of Sikhism. People who took an oath to become Sikh for rest of their life, don’ t eat outside, as they believe in-home cooked food. These values started with village people who grow most of the things at home.
Eating meat and drinking is not prohibited. This is the belief of peoples who take an oath that after eating meat they don’t feel good about it. People, who used to eat and drink, described that after eating meat they feel like they eat someone (living one), as animals don’t speak like us but they have spirit. This is something Sikhs believe personally that in order to pray, concentration, and meditation, eating simple food is good. The mind is so powerful so it takes strength toward thoughts. Thoughts have the power to change someone’s life in

I preferred homemade most of the time. In the past 3 or 4 years, I tried a lot of different foods and like to stick with veggie food with chicken. I can’t eat pork and beef because every time I think about trying it makes me sick. No offense but everyone is different. I discussed it at home and my mother told me that I was very sensitive as compared to my brother. My immune system is not that strong and this is the reason I am very skinny because I don’t try new food. I get scared with the feeling of no liking

Pollan states that food is not just a necessity to survive, it has a greater meaning to life. Pollan explains how food can cause us happiness and health by connecting us to our family and culture. Warren Belasco, in “Why Study Food”, supports Pollan’s idea that food is something social and cultural. In Belasco’s description of a positive social encounter food is included, whether it involves a coffee date with a colleague or a dinner date with a loved one. Belasco states that food forms our identity and brings our society together.
With every experience that we have with food, a memory is created. Our experiences with food begin when we are infants. The memories can be traumatic or they can be pleasant, but they will affect the way we think, act, and shape our ideas about food in the future. Just like our language, the clothes we wear on a daily basis, our individual customs, and the values and beliefs that we have, food is important in constructing our overall identity too. If the way a person speaks, dresses, and thinks can reveal a lot about who they are as individuals, then doesn't food also define us? Everything that revolves around our food from what we choose to eat and how our food is obtained and prepared to when and how we eat tells us so much about
Knowing our cultures is very important in understanding our environment as well as of others. It also help us understand how people take different aspects of life including diet. This is because culture determines our perception and attitudes toward particular issues about which is helpful and which is not, what makes sense and what does not. Some cultures prefer quantity meals to quality food which can lead to obesity or even some cardiovascular diseases to people of that culture while others prefer a balanced diet hence a healthy body, in central America, in particular Honduras and Guatemala, they prefer frying their food first. Due to this method of cooking it is possible to have a devastating health effect on the
Throughout time, food has always played a large role in every day life. One aspect of life that food really plays a large role in is religious life. It is important to recognize that the first commandment that God gave to us was a restriction on eating. Many religions have dietary laws or restrictions that explain to the people of their religion what they can and cannot eat. The first commandments that God gave to us were related to eating. In the Bible, we see the Mosaic dietary laws. These laws were set and regulated by Moses, as explained by God’s law. The Old Testament is full of restrictions regarding food consumption and what types of foods should not be consumed. I will be further examining the Mosaic dietary laws and the role they continue to play in the modern-day and in many people lives.
Despite being one of the world's largest world religions, Sikhism remains one of the most unknowledgeable and misunderstood traditions in America now. It is overseen and viewed in a lens based off assumptions of events that have occurred over the years. The lack of understanding has brought up too many serious consequences for their community including discriminatory policies, prejudiced stereotypes, shocking school bullying and violent hate crimes. To begin, Sikhism is a religion originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent about the end of the 15th century. It is known as one of the youngest of the major world religions! The vital beliefs of
In Hinduism, a well-balanced diet is essential for having a strong faith and spiritual development. When a person's body is properly nourished the body is healthier thus a person is mentally more focused and stable. In fact, there is such a strong emphasis in Hinduism on proper food consumption that there is a diet code. Sattva, Tamas, and Rajas are the three food groups/diets of the diet code. Each of these food groups/diets are thought to produce certain emotions. Sattvic is the best of foods. Foods such as greens, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey, plant oil extract etc. In general, very natural whole foods are thought to create a feeling of relaxation and nobility. These Sattvic foods are thought to nourish the body well, create focus, and maximize energy. This focus and energy, in turn, could help a person seek wisdom and increase in spirituality. The next food group is the tamasic foods. This type of food is thought to create lethargy and overall negative emotions. Tasamic foods are typically left over foods. If Sattvic foods are leftover or not fresh they are th...
Sikhism is a monotheistic organized religion founded in the 15th century in the Punjab region of India by Guru Nanak the first of 10 Gurus. Sikhism’s philosophy has evolved through the added teachings of each Guru over time. Each Guru would appoint a successor and this process continued until the 10th Guru, Goband Singh, declared he would be the last Guru of Sikh ism and the teachings of each Guru was recorded by the sixth Guru in scripture titled the Guru Granth Sahib. This is the central religious text of Sikhism and is considered by many Sikhs to be the final sovereign guru of the religion. The main teaching of Sikhism is the idea of the oneness of God. Sikhs believe that the spiritual and secular worlds are intertwined rather than separate. Sikhism teaches its followers that all religious traditions can help to enli...
Realizing the necessity of refraining from meat is especially difficult because people consume it for a long time, and in addition, there is a certain attitude to the meat as to the product that is useful, nourishing and even prestigious. On the other hand, the constant consumption of meat has made the vast majority of people completely emotionless towards it. However, there must be some real and strong reasons for refusal to consume meat and as I noticed they were always completely different. So, even though vegetarianism has evolved drastically over time, some of its current forms have come back full circle to resemble that of its roots, when vegetarianism was an ethical-philosophical choice, not merely a matter of personal health. As believed, vegetarianism was originally founded in ancient India and was generally formed on ethical and moral issues.
The majority of people view food as fuel to conduct our daily task and activities. The focal point food has extends beyond just energy for the body or a necessity for survival. Eating or not eating foods is a personal act in which we symbolically consume our identity. We are what we eat. It communicates to others our beliefs, culture, social background and experience; it shapes our outer appearance and our health. Eating food can swiftly change our moods, enhance academic performances and heighten concentration. Food gives people personality, which is a specific identity reflected in our values and relationships. Food resembles our families, religion, province, rituals and ethnicity. Food can either bring people together or set them apart.
I have came realizes that society were forced to let animal eaten by human due to scarcity that the society faces from time to time. I have also learned that there are thousands secrets in the world which can not be said openly to stop people from consuming animals foods. At first I had start doing the research about the cultural connection of Goat meat, by the end i came to clearly understand the misunderstanding that is laid in my culture.
Sikhism is the youngest religion out of all the major world religions, it is actually only about five hundered years old. Sikhism like most religions was “born out of an shaped by exisiting faiths, and like offspirng bears a likeness to them.” (Singh 2004 p-16). Sikhism was created out of two reigions those being Islam and Hinduism. The time that when Sikhism was created was a time when India was being torn apart by different religious factions. The founder of Sikhism was Guru Nanak Dev Ji and he was born in 1469. According to Singh (2004) Guru Nanak spread the message of “Ek Omkar” which basically means that we are all one, created by the One Creater of all Creation. Guru Nanak did not aligne himself with a religion he actually respected all religions but he did express the reality that there is only one God and that the Name of God is Truth. Basically Singh (2004) tells us that the followers of Guru Nanak were Sikhs which literealy means student or disciple. Sikhs have many beliefs but their main belief stated by Robinson (2009) is that Sikhs believe in one God that has many names and has no s...
Anyone can agree that cultures vary significantly. Anywhere from society views, to genetics, and even food! The eating habits of all the different cultures in the world are one of the most significant changes between nations and cultures to other nations and cultures. Anywhere in the world will have different eating habits, for example, Americans eat small meals throughout the day and then indulge in a big filling meal for supper, while in Mexico, breakfast tends to be the biggest meal of the day. Now, because of these changes in cultural views, anthropology is very much involved. This is why I am going to go in depth on the eating habits from four different cultures: Japanese, Mexican, and American.
As living organisms, foods are one of the resources that essential to life to function the body normally. I have been experiencing with health and nutrition issue in both developing and developed societies. As referring to the period when I was in middle school in Northwestern Thailand, I still remember the time when many of the children and adults suffered from eating disorder, hypertension, underweights, Type II diabetes, abnormal body development issue and other disease that related to nutritional problems. Unfortunately, there was not growing enough food produced from farming and no mandatory nutrition education in the town. People in that town didn’t know about nutrition’s facts and
Food teaches, or illustrates, something meaningful about life, health, family, and culture. Although food keeps us alive there are many ways we misuse food. We can use the mistreatment of food to learn about our family, our health, and our culture. Abuse and mistreatment of food looks different for each person based on our culture and experiences in life. Ever since I was little, my family looked towards food for comfort. The most prominent time that sticks out to me was when my mom passed away. We were filling the void of our loss with the food we were deciding to eat. We weren’t eating healthy and we didn’t really care what was going into our bodies or how much we were putting in. Along with not eating healthy, we weren’t exercising or watching
