I will be explaining the issues that create the role of ethics in policing. The ethics of policing involves many hard choices as well as avoiding violations of basic moral standards. Police officers will naturally face ethical issues concerned with questions of right and wrong in all situations. Besides, the authority that is given to police officers to protect the public submits the desire to abuse the power they have. I will also explain the rule-of-law and how it represents societal standards that explain police duties and responsibilities. The number one question is when will an officer be faced with one. Throughout an officer profession, they should mention the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics which is a code that stands for everything that a police officer should be. This code was accepted by the Peace Officer's Research Association of California in 1956 and since then has made its way across the country to Police departments and its officers. Many departments mission statement have been obtained from the very words that appear on the code of ethics. As stated on a law website the code of ethics says “As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality, and justice. I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn, or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. There are many examples from our Christian faith that get in the way of our ethical rules in policing, one reason is a police officer doing undercover work and that requires lying in some shape or form. A verse that talks about being undercover would be Hebrews 11:31 “He gathers intelligence information and passes it on to his government. Spying is not intrinsically evil”. Christians who hold the sanctity of life we should work towards fewer deaths, but also a stronger definition of life. There will be challenges for all peace-minded Christians, because it will not allow us to take the institution of police for granted. We will need to pay attention to the historical and social function of policing and of the carceral state as a group, regardless of the intentions of those who serve in policing roles. The one bible verse that should make every law enforcer think is the most important is Roman 13:1 “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God”. Christians are told that the authorities are made authority by God so whoever resists the authorities are resisting God and that will not end
