Society improves when heroes take action. Heroes are people who show bravery, go above the call of duty, and stand up when they know something is wrong. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Winston, the protagonist, fails to show the people, that in order to succeed, people must stand up for what they believe in. Winston does not speak against the Party, even though he has a differing opinion from the Party. Julia the accomplice who is Winston’s partner shares the same opinion with Winston and is key when they, together hide from the party to share their opinions. Winston does not show any traits of being a hero, and he is not a hero in the novel 1984 because of his obliviousness, secrecy, and lack of hope.
A person’s obliviousness can hinder their ability to act, affecting their ability to be a hero. Winston, who assumed he was not being watched when he said “I could hear the woman

Julia the accomplice who plays an integral part in giving directions to Winston so they can stay protected from the Party, says “We can come here once again, said Julia. It's generally safe to use any hide-out twice. But not for another month or two, of course”(Orwell 128). Julia who helps Winston hide and explains to Winston you can use a hiding place twice. This is an important part of Winston not being a hero because he is constantly hiding from the Party. As defined earlier hero is someone who stands up for what they believe in and Winston keeps his secrecy. Julia helps with this and although they share their own opinion in there private meetings, they do not share their own opinion publicly. Throughout the story they continue to hide from the party thinking they are safe. A hero would not hide from the Party, instead, they would stand up for what they believe in. Winston does not do this and maintains his silence, which is not a characteristic of a

What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
Although both anti-heroes rebel against the government for freedom, their behaviours are different from each other. For example, Winston is the typical citizen who rebels against the government in a quiet and peaceful way, whereas V is a revolutionist in an excited and violent way. This comparison helps classify the key behaviours, which explains the different approaches the anti-heroes took towards liberation. In conclusion, George Orwell and James McTeigue demonstrate how the anti-hero’s personality and behaviour can be used in accomplishing their
Julia represents elements of humanity that Winston does not: survival, instincts, pure sexuality and cunning (1984 By George Orwell Character Analysis Julia). Her actions show the lack of an emotional connection to anyone, even Winston. Any feelings of connection she once shared with Winston do not outweigh the fear of her own mortality. Julia is a true survivor and she is willing to perform any act to carry out her self-centered rebellion.
Prior to meeting Julia, Winston frets constantly about life and essentially has nothing to look forward to. Julia’s arrival into his life not only gives him
The protagonists in stories are often portrayed as heroic and not like everyone else. The author of 1984, George Orwell, did so in a rather unusual way. His definition of heroism is: ordinary people doing whatever they can to change social systems that do not respect human decency, even with the knowledge that they can’t possibly - - - - -succeed. This definition is already a bit different to what most people would think. Hero’s are mostly seen as people with superpowers who cannot be defeated or - - - -influenced by higher, external powers. Winston Smith, the protagonist of the story, struggles to embody the characteristics of a true hero while dealing with Big Brother and the Party.. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
As expected, the Party captures the couple and both are tortured by the Party in attempt to change their negative connotation surrounding Big Brother. Winston immediately confesses his crimes, although he still clings on to the hope and trust he has in his love for Julia which prevents him from giving into the Party’s initial torture. However, Winston does not expect the Party to be aware of the depth of his trust; it was their plan all along to capture Winston at the peak of his relationship with Julia, The Party captures Winston at that moment because they know that his trust in Julia is at an optimal level for exposure. By targeting that trust, the Party is able to stop that trust dead in their tracks and instead manipulate it towards Big Brother. Eventually, Winston follows this path and betrays Julia. The Party destroys his love by exposing his deepest fear of rats. This leads Winston to realize that his love for Julia is not all powerful and eternal since he is able to give it up so readily in order to save himself. After being released, Winston sees Julia and she describes that she betrayed him as well. She comments that in regards to the betrayal,
A hero is a man of courage and ability who is admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. A hero is a person who does not come along very often in any time period. He is a special person, who is a step above the average person in the way that he handles any situation that may arise.
A hero is someone who risks themselves to help others. Atticus is a hero because he stood up for what he believed was right, but he is not the only hero in the novel. Boo Radley, like Atticus, is also a hero because he shows sacrifice for others. Using this definition of heroism, there may be other heroes in the book. However, Bob Ewell is a coward because he endangered the life of others to protect himself. He demonstrates many characteristics that are the opposite of heroism.
What is a hero? Is it a character who has immense strength and is admired for his or her outstanding achievements in situations that are different from what normal life is like? After World War I, many young boys thought that participating in a war was a rite of passage, a way of becoming men. They looked up to their fathers and grandfathers as “heroes” who fought for their country, and they wanted to become just like them. When World War II began, those boys believed this was their chance to become just like their heroes by fighting for their country. If they survived, they would be considered heroes upon their return.
Both are taken into custody and tortured and beaten so that they can be rebuilt to obey the Party and to sell out each other. Winston takes many days of torture and pain before he is put into room 101 where he is encountered with his worst fear, which is rats. Winston the breaks down and yells, “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me” (Orwell 286). The only thing that kept Winston going was the fact that he hadn’t yet betrayed Julia, and he felt determined to never betray her. With Julia, O’Brien told Winston that she gave him away almost instantly. She was all about saving herself, and did not care about what could happen to Winston now that they were caught and their relationship would not continue.
A tragic hero can be described as a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is
