The relationship between Winston and Julia may seem to be based upon mutual love and respect, but in reality it is very one-sided. The two both take initiative in the relationship whether it be to benefit themselves or the other person, and bring something important to the relationship, however, the appeal of their secretive love wears off quickly as the relationship progresses.
From the beginning of this story, it is shown how important Julia, or the girl with dark hair, is going to be in the life of Winston Smith. Both are taken into custody and tortured and beaten so that they can be rebuilt to obey the Party and to sell out each other. Winston takes many days of torture and pain before he is put into room 101 where he is encountered with his worst fear,which is rats. Winston the breaks down and yells, “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me” (Orwell 286). The only thing that kept Winston going was the fact that he hadn’t yet betrayed Julia, and he felt determined to never betray her. With Julia, O’Brien told Winston that she gave him away almost instantly. She was all about saving herself,and did not care about what could happen to Winston now that they were caught and their relationship would not continue.
Later, after Winston and Julia return to regular society, they meet again and it is evident that they no longer have feelings for one another, but neither is phased by this fact. They tell of how they both gave each other away in the end and that it was, at this point, very common knowledge for both of them. They then part ways as strangers to one
The saying, “love is blind” is particularly applicable to the relationship between Winston and Julia. The glass paperweight is symbolic of the lovers living in their own bubble, oblivious to what is happening around them. In the specific room that Winston and Julia meet the and the one that Winston describes as the glass of the paperweight, the forbidden lovers engage in intimate actions. In Oceania, “the Party has outlawed sex for pleasure and reduced marriage to an arrangement between a man and a woman that exists only for procreation” (Bloom’s Guide 239). The purpose of Winston and Julia’s actions is for pleasure and a symbol of their true love to one another. In order for the two to meet they must set up times for them to get together or a brief period of time where they can speak to one another without getting caught. Winston explains that “it had been impossible to arrange meetings,” due to the increase of working hours in preparation for Hate Week (Orwell 138). The lover’s actions depict their emotions and desperation to be with one another despite the constrictions that are exemplified by the confinement of the
Julia instructs Winston how to return to London. The two arranged meetings where and when they would meet again. Julia reveals that she is not interested in the revolt. Although, she is a personal rebel. Winston reveals information to Julia about his wife Katherine which he decided weather to not killer her or not. Winston returned to Mr. Charrington’s offer: he had rented the room above his shop in order to spend some private time with Julia. Winston reveals his fear of rats.
He and Julia met up very frequently at the apartment he rented above the shop where he purchased his journal. Unfortunately, with a hidden telescreen in the room, they were found out and brought in to a facility for thoughtcriminals. They were tortured until they were broken, physically and mentally. Throughout this process, Winston remained honest in spite of the pain. “I don’t know. I don’t know. You will kill me if you do that again, Four, five, six—in all honestly I don’t know (Orwell, page 252).” From there they were rebuilt into ideal citizens and released back into regular society, to later be killed for their original crimes. “He was walking down the white-tiled corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and an armed guard at his back. This is a form of resistance, although it does not hurt the party, it does defy what they stand for. The Party strictly restricts sex and only permits it when it is used to create children. These acts of resistance from Julia and Winston are one of the reasons that they fall in love with each other. They love each other because of the fact that they have a mutual hatred for the Party. Their resistance to the Party is very similar to each other’s in the beginning of the book, but is very different later
Winston expresses his feelings towards Julia in such an extraordinary way, “He would flog her to death with a rubber truncheon. He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows.”(Orwell 15). When he is expressing these thoughts, he is actually talking about someone he was actrate to, Winston just had no way of expressing it besides anger. He sees this beautiful young girl, who has made this vow its remain pure and chaste and he just wants to kill her because of how frustrated about it. Although late in the book, who these same two people are alone in a place without worry, everything is different, for example “You are prepared, the two of you to separate and never see one another again. ‘No!’ broke in Julia….’No,’ he said finally.” (Orwell 173) This second moment gives us a definite second opinion about how he may actually feel towards Julia. When they are both in a safe place, and can freely state and do they things they wish to do, Winston does show that he cares for Julia, enough that he does not want to leave her. I believe that these two different feelings show us that even with the body trying to control how people feel, what they do, along with what they think they never get to have complete control of
She shows much more interest in Winston that she is supposed to. Both Julia and Winston are together but it is not equivalent to what the party expects. The Party expects the citizens to have relationships without any emotions toward one another, they are only prohibited to produce children. They are supposed to check in with the party so that it can be approved that there was no feeling toward each other. “All marriage between Party members had to be approved by a committee appointed for the purpose and though the principle was never clearly stated...the impression of being physically attracted to each other.” (Orwell 57) Which is one of the acts that shows that Julia is rebelling from what mostly affects
Due to the extreme differences in the couple’s personalities, the reader is left to question whether Julia ever loved Winston. Julia embodies the qualities that Winston wishes he had. The differences in their morality, their motivation towards the rebellion and their personalities are the few reasons why they are drawn to each other, but it is bittersweet as their differences cause their downfall.

The backbone of her individuality lay within her sexuality. Julia stated that she lost her virginity at an early age and engaged in sexual activity with numerous men over time. Her sexuality is also a point for her weakness due to her desire to be with Winston romantically and sexually. Due to this, it puts her independence and character at stake. This is demonstrated when she agrees to meet O’Brien under with Winston under his influence. It emphasizes how attached she is to Winston and unwittingly put her independence and character at stake. However, the burden of her responsibilities as a citizen comes back to haunt her. This is demonstrated when she is captured by the Thought Police along with Winston. Both Julia and Winston realize that they shall die and this demonstrates the consequences of ignoring their responsibilities as members of the Outer Party. It also highlights how Julia attempts not commit to her duties as a member of the Outer Party due to her engaging in sex. Her independence and character is broken and turns into a delusory sense of elevated self-worth. This is evident in the change of her body shape and scar near her scalp. This indicates that like

I don't believe either of them knew what true love was, they couldn’t see the difference from love and lust. In the book Winston’s feelings towards Julia were always changing. In the beginning he had hated her, wanted to murder her. Towards the middle of the book he began to warm up to her and show feelings towards her. To start off, Orwell's sole inclusion of women who base their relationships with men exclusively on sex demonstrates Orwell's negative beliefs about women. Despite Julia's claims to love Winston, their relationship is not about “the love of one person, but the animal instinct”(132). Julia has been in similar relationships to her and Winston's “hundreds of times”(131), relationships that look only at the sexual side and never at the emotional. She refuses all of Winston's attempts to expand their relationship, having “a disconcerting habit of falling asleep”(163) whenever he persists in talking. Clearly, Winston no longer feels any love towards Julia, for when they meet again “He did not attempt to kiss her, nor did they speak.” (305) Furthermore, any thought of sex causes Winston’s “flesh [to freeze] with horror” (304). His inability to love or feel sexual desire renders him less likely to revolt against the Party, which makes him an ideal Party member. Finally, his unquestionable love for Big Brother is ultimately what makes him “perfect” from the party’s perspective.
