The problem is medical assistants don't get paid what they should. They have so many responsibilities but don't get paid like nurses and other higher professions. Medical assistants do just as much as nurses if not more and get paid around half as much as nurses get paid. Every medical assistant knows how much they are going to get paid when going into this field so it is a choice, that they chose. But it would be better if they were to get paid more for everything that they do. Anyways, In my own opinion medical assistants don't get paid what they should for everything that they learn and do in college and in their workfield. She had a big toll on me as far as me going back to school for medical assisting. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do but she told me it was a good field to get into, but they don't get paid the greatest.
I'm not sure if this is true and I tried to look it up, but my aunt said that the American Association of Medical Assistants is trying to raise the pay of medical assistants to 18 dollars an hour. They are trying to level it out with nurses because they do just as much as a nurse. Anyhow, the solution to medical assistants not getting paid what they should is to give them a raise. Everyone works better with a raise anyways. They have a better mood, and attitude, etc. Many people may not see the pay as a problem because they like what they do regardless of the pay. But to some the pay plays a big role because of certain financial needs and problems that they may have. Things such as bills and children may play a huge part as to why medical assistants may need a raise. Not only medical assistants but just about every other profession in the world needs money for their children and bills but medical assistant barely get paid enough to make this happen. They have administrative and clinical responsibilities in their workfield. Some of the administrative duties according to the “American Association of Medical Assistants may include, using computer applications, answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, coding and filing out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.” Also, according to the “American Association of Medical Assistants, the clinical duties are taking medical histories, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, assisting the physician during exams, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, instructing patients about medications as directed by a physician, authorizing prescription refills as directed, drawing blood, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures and changing dressing. Their duties vary within the location and specialty of their practice.” The other solution is to cut back many responsibilities of a medical assistant and to make things easier on them. Cutting back their responsibilities will make them feel that they are getting paid what they should for the minimum of things that they are doing. Because right now they are getting paid little for the maximum of things that they are doing. It is great that medical assistants can do all these things, that they stay busy and that they know a lot of things and they can move up easier. If medical assistants done the least they prob would be bored all of the time. They wouldn’t take much pride in their job. It would prob be good for other professions as they would need to hire other people to do things that medical assistants aren't doing anymore. What i feel strongly about them doing is giving medical assistants raises and not cutting their responsibilities because it is a better solution to the problem then to cut their responsibilities and keep their pay. In the end giving them a raise will make them happy and it will pay their bills. Who doesn't love a raise? Because medical assistants have to do all of these responsibilities they have to be involved in their work, and how can they do that if they feel they are working for nothing. Medical assistants do more and have more to do than just administrative and clinical. They have to be nonjudgemental and be able to treat all patients equally. While doing this they have to maintain a high level of confidentiality. They have to have excellent written and verbal communication skills. They have to be highly organized. According to online medical assistant programs, “During the course of a day, the medical assistant must communicate with patients, physicians, and coworkers. They must also be able to deal with several aspects of the practice simultaneously in an organized, efficient manner.” Medical assistants have way too many things to do during the day that if they were to get a raise it will help them stay more motivated in every task that they do. It might even help them deal with situations better and think things out because they want to keep their job. Giving them a raise will make them think that keeping their job is worth it.
As a medical assistant, you will spend most of your day interacting with patients from all types of life. There will never be one type of patient, they will always be different.
