On college campuses across the country, LGBTQ students of color are flourishing, finding new opportunities to express themselves.

Having this intersection of identities, however, does bring certain challenges for students, and they may at times not feel supported a individuals who belong to several identity groups. They may feel pressured to select either their sexual orientation and gender identity/expression or their race or identity when it comes to expressing who they are. Undergraduate programs may only include groups that cater to one or the other.

LGBTQ students of color often face racism on behalf of white members of the LGBTQ community in addition to the white mainstream community. They also face prejudice from straight members …show more content…

For instance, the term Same Gender Loving (SGL) originated in the African American community as a way to describe a person who is attracted to someone of the same gender. The term Two Spirit originated in the American Indian/First Nation community as a way to describe a person who blends traditionally polar gender identities. Historically, the term was used to describe people who crossed gender boundaries and were supported by the American Indian/First Nation community. Today, some transgender, and even some gay, lesbian, and bisexual American Indians, describe themselves as Two Spirit.

People in communities of color may prefer alternative terms to gay, lesvian, bisexual, queer, or transgender because they may feel that these words are Eurocentric and do not traditionally represent people of color.
