Introduction
There are various methods of joining two or more metal (or thermoplastic) parts, among of which, welding is the most studied and used in the industry. Welding is done by joining two separate pieces of material through elevating the working temperature high enough to cause softening or melting, thereby achieving coalescence. A filler material is usually added to the work pieces during melting in order to strengthen the joint. [1] The filler material is deposited from a special electrode connected to the electric circuit that also includes the work pieces. [2]
The number of different welding processes has increased for the last few decades. These processes differ greatly in the manner in which heat and pressure (when used) are applied, and in the type of equipment used. [1] A simple and logical way of classifying the welding processes is according to the sources of energy used for achieving coalescence. The welding processes can be broadly classified as: (1) thermo-chemical welding; (2) pressure welding; and (3) fusion welding. [3]
