History of Oxy-fuel welding and cutting
Oxy- fuel welding is usually called in workplace/trades terms oxy acetylene welding, gas welding and oxy fuel cutting which are all use fuel and oxygen to cut and weld metals together. It all started with the famous chemist Edmund Davy, who is suppose to be considered as the first man to make acetylene. By accident in 1836 Edmund while trying to make potassium created a black compound which was mixed with water create a gas that burned greatly. Edmund wanted to use this gas to make lights but the materials and production would cost to much. Calcium carbide was not identified until 1862. In 1892 calcium carbide was created by accident when trying to create calcium from coal tar when the production reacted with water.

When oxy cutting, you must switch tips before starting. This from of cutting happens when you use the torch to heat the metal to its extreme temperature. stream of oxygen is then pushed upon the metal, burning it into a metal oxide to cut through the metal. The torches used do not mix oxygen and fuel together they instead go through two different hoses to then come out through the tip. Combined syetems of single tanks are not oxy fuel torches, when can be recognized because oxy torches have two tanks others like just acetylene torches used in brazing and soldering is a single tank, which is suitable and works well for that type of work but not for welding. To begin with, Study.com tells that the lowest level of education required is a high school diploma or equivalent. Many employers may require an employer- based welding test. Some employers look for a certificate or undergraduate degree from a technical school (Study.com). Next, it is important to note where training is available. WATC.edu states, that they offer a welding program. WATC is located in Wichita Kansas. Their welding program allows students to gain knowledge and skills in cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and provides some exposure to oxy-acetylene cutting and welding (WATC.edu). In addition, the length and cost of the training is an important consideration. WATC.edu shares, that there are 5 different degree and certificate options. The one I would be interested in is the Welding Technical Certificate option. This one would be a total of 46 credit hours and would cost a total of $10,524. Finally, this job requires certain traits, talents and interests. The Occupational Handbook adds, that welders often must work in awkward positions using tools, so they need to be able to put up with that. A lot of times, overtime will be present. So you would have to be available for overtime if needed. Welders are required to lift heavy objects sometimes. So a welder should be fairly strong (The OCO). I think that being a welder would be hard work. I feel that I would be able to work hard enough to be a welder. I now know what traits a person should have, in order to be a welder. Even though welding has been around for a long time, most of the best inventors were around during the 19th century and have changed the way thing are done today. During the 20th century, many technological advancements developed and have made welding easier because of the different types of welding that have been developed. Welding impacted the world during World War l, because during the war armaments that were going to be utilized were ordered in tremendous amounts. Welding has been around since the 1800’s with basic processes, like the use of the oxy-acetylene torch. Then the process of arc welding came into play in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, when electrical welding became widely popular. Now there are many different kinds of arc welding with materials such as different electrodes, fluxes, and gases.
GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is more economic; Springer reports that “ GMAW is an economic process because it has higher speeds and higher deposition rates than manual arc welding. There is also no need to constantly change electrodes” ( Page 11). GMAW has a higher speed, which means that you can get the job done faster. It also has high deposition rates which makes the weld look clean and smooth.” This method can be used for a high range of work, but it is not suited for repair work because of it’s weld quality” (Page 4). This process can be used for many variations of work including root welds, joints, T’s, butts, laps, and many more applications. Even though its used for many practices, it is not recommended to use this method for repair work because of the quality of the welds. “ It’s easy to use and it is inexpensive to afford now with 110v machines. But you cannot weld for a long time like a 220v machines would produce. Both have different duty cycles” (Parag. 7). M.I.G is something anyone can learn easily, it’s inexpensive to afford. 110v machines don't bring out the best power to weld, because these machines do not have a good duty cycle. Most people prefer 220v machines because they produce more work, even if they are more expensive. GMAW is the cheapest most reliable process for welding.

During the middle ages welding was very common. Early Egyptians learned the art of welding. Several of their tools were made by welding. A set of specialized workmen called blacksmiths created tools by melting the metal, then hammering them together. This method did not change much until the dawn of the 19th century which held major breakthroughs in welding. An open flame (acetylene) was very important to the history of welding. It allowed manufactures to make metal tools and equipment. In 1836 a man named Edmund Davy discovered acetylene which was soon utilized in the welding industries. Coated metal electrodes were first introduced in the 1900s. A coating of lime covered the electrode and made the weld much more stable. A number of other welding processes were also invented, such as seam welding, spot welding, flash butt welding, and projection welding. Stick welding also became popular around this time too. In the 1920s automatic welding was first introduced by P.O. Nobel. Automatic welding integrated the use of arc voltage and bare wire. It was mainly used for fixing old, molding metals. Several types of electrodes were also developed during this decade. A new type of welding was developed in the 1940s by Meredith. This became known as Heliarc Welding. Gas shielded arc welding or GTAW was another significant milestone in the welding history. Several advancements in the welding field were made in the 1960s. Dual shield, inner shield, and electro slag were some of the more important kinds developed. Plasma arc was also invented and was mainly used for metal spraying. Welding is a very important tool used in our daily lives. Welding is the process of joining two metal pieces together by applying heat. A filler helps to make the joint. Everything we use from trucks to houses have some type of welding in them. There are many types of welding careers to choose from. There is a great demand for welders today. My project was to build a table and candelabra out of metal. Most of the metal I gathered came from junk yards and had to be cleaned of rust.
