Transaction Processing System
Introduction to Transaction Processing System(TPS)
Transaction Processing System collects and stores data about transactions. It also changes stored data such as making an airline reservation, business transactions, and accounting transactions.
Two types of Transaction Processing System(TPS)
- Batch transaction processing
Information is collected but not processed immediately. In other way, it is an efficient way of processing high volumes of data where a group of transactions is collected over a period of time. Data is collected, entered and processed, then only the batch results will be obtained. Each step is done separately for the input, process and output. Data collected is prepared for input as a single unit and the updating takes place when it is scheduled or sufficient of data.
Example :
Payroll , billing system , cheque clearance, credit card transactions, stock control, overdue library books, accounting and hotel accounts.
- Real Time Processing
It is a transaction processed immediately. Referred to as online transaction processing as the data is generally entered into a workstation and connected in a topology formation to a network or more likely connected to a database. Data collected is also verified immediately as it is entered. Real time processing is important for immediate results.
Example :
Library loans system, reservations (movie, airline), bank ATMs
Components of a transaction system
- User
The source of the data gathered. Information can be resulted by gaining data from the user and the organization that is making the transactions.
- Participants
People who are responsible in conduction the processing of the data and information.

- Too much consolidation in maintaining the TPS because it requires a lot from a firm. In owning the system, an organization is needed to maintain the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week to keep the system working well without any errors occurred. A flawless integration with other departments such as shipping, payrolls, accounting and inventory to ensure the data given is precisely correct.
Conclusion
Transaction Processing System is a must in every big organization to monitor each transaction made. Each transaction made is atomic which means related accounts or shipping or accounting matter, must be the same so that loss of data won’t happen. Wrong data entered is also detected earlier because of the well-integrated system that is related to the database
I think that the best and most effective way to implement the process would be to add in past information or data in the system, doing this will help because when old information is keyed into the system, it would help the system get used to the data that is being input into the system. This will definitely make new and upcoming data being added to the system becomes faster, accurate and efficient and also the work will be easier for the ...
Accounts Receivable has good separation of duties and strong internal controls such as control numbers and reconciliations to sales and bank statements. One weakness in the Accounts receivable system is the accounting supervisor approves summary entries and reconciles the general ledger account, which could indicate a weakness with segregation of duties. We recommend that the controller approves of summary entries to segregate these duties.
It is been observed that Tegan’s A/P system was very complex and they had to pay their bill at the appropriate time. The system was been brought to its breaking point as per the Tegan’s increase in its volumes as well as vendors. The system was been blocked as per its runtime errors as well as blocked records. Each transaction is stored in a log file that will be useful, in conjunction with the error files, in case one of the processes fails validation to go back and find out which process was to determine the cause of the

Ensuring office supplies are replenished as and when necessary (for example paper; office stationery, printer toner).
The second step is entering the transactions of the period in appropriate journals. This step consists of taking the journal entries, assigning each to an asset, liability, equity, expense or revenue account(s) to debit and credit. This can be done by almost anyone. I have had jobs where the bookkeeper does the journal entries and figures out which accounts are affected. I have also had jobs where anyone from a receptionist to a staff accountant does this step. If the person doing the journal entries does not have a background in accounting, or is unfamiliar with which accounts are affected, the person submitting the source documents will write down which accounts should be debited and which should be credited. This practice makes doing the journal entries little more than data entry, which can be done by nearly every employee.
The user may then walk through the revenue cycle by entering sales orders, sending customers invoices, and entering the receipt of payment into the system. All of these steps are neatly organized in order in the software window. Example:. For example, if a user needed to enter the sale of a product on credit to a customer, if the customer has already been entered into the system and the inventory item is already set up to be tracked by the system, the user would need to enter the customer and what was sold and any additional information which differs from defaults. If the sale was preceded by a sales order, the product information can simply be imported from the sales order.

It simplifies the storage and processing of large amounts of data, eases the deployment and operation of large-scale global products and services, and automates much of the administration of large-scale clusters of computers.
“From early on the ambition of ERP-systems has been used to integrate all transaction systems within the one system which combines all information and practices across full organisation, and gives proper information for decision-making in real-time” (Bjorn-Andersen & Johansson 2007)
Nowadays with the implementation of new emerging technologies, the way businesses keep this financial information has become computerised. At the moment businesses use computers with a computerised accounting system in order to perform many other new activities than what they were able to do in the past.
