Sections & Terminology of Welds
The figures below indicate section areas and terminology which need to be considered when the welded area is examined. Figure 1: retrieved from http://www.weldguru.com/SMAWNomenclatureandJoints.html
As it can be seen below the fusion zone is the position the position where the base metal is melted together and combined with the weld. Root of the weld is the area at the bottom of the specimen where the welding comes in contact with the surface of the base metal. The toe of the weld is the area at the top surface of the component where a junction between the base metal and the face of the weld has occurred. The reinforcement of the weld is the excessive weld metal on the top of the surface of the specimen on the face of the groove weld.

Moreover, several other instruments can be used from the operator for profile assessment of the inspected objects, such as mirrors and gauges. Last but not least, endoscopes and borescopes are used for inspecting parts with limited access.
Visual Testing applications
This method finds applications in virtually every industry and can be used for primary processing inspection, secondary process inspection and in-service inspection.
Primary process inspection is referring to the inspection of raw materials that are going to be used for the manufacturing process such as furnace conditions and ladle lining.
Secondary and finishing process includes the monitoring of components that are used for the forming of welding, extrusion, forging soldering and many others.
However, in this particular project in-service inspection needs to be taken into more consideration, because of the need to inspect components that are operating.
In-service

The other metallurgical feature that is directly affected by the heat input rate is grain size in the heat affected zone (HAZ) and in the weld metal. In steel welding, it is necessary to seek a heat input rate that gives the optimum combination of grain size and cooling rate [11]. Before the actual welding is done, all the earlier steps such as layout, plate edge preparation, fit up and alignment should be well planned with regard to achieving desired product quality. Sikandar Singh Assistant Engineer, Department of Welding Engg. Cheema Boilers Limited, Kurali, India.
Metal finishing is the critical part and step in preparing the metal for painting. It happens between the bumping stage when the metal is pried, hammered, pulled, and pushed into shape and the filling stage, when the small defects and details in metal finished surfaces are filled before being painted. Any type of finish is applied over your work weather the it be solvent, powder coated, or plastic it will have an index of reflection and ...
Inspection between each flight besides avoiding accidents, it also helps engineers to understand what problems that would be aroused by operation environment. Pre-flight inspection of Aloha 243 was only carried out before the first flight each day which is inadequate. Besides, all inspection records at each inspection should be kept; it records all the status of the parts and help engineers to understand how the aircraft structures would be affected after each operation.
The first thing to consider is the process of cleaning and coating of the boards. This particular process involves the set-up of the machines, the loading of the boards, and the actual cleaning and coating of the said boards by the machines.
...irplane that the inspector can navigate through via voice commands to mark a region of the airplane that is in need of service. Once identified, the application tags the area for transmission to the maintenance database and initiates the proper form for the inspector to fill out. The form is completed and then transmitted to the same maintenance database. When the inspector has identified all of the problems with a particular region, voice navigation is used to continue to other areas of the aircraft. The inspector is not required to take any information about the aircraft, previous defect records, clipboards, paper, etc. with them, everything required to perform the inspection is on-line and displayed in a manageable fashion in real time during the inspection. When the inspector completes the inspection, no further input is required. The inspector is not required to take notes and then pass them off to someone else to decipher and input to the system. The information is already in the maintenance database and ready for verification, planning, and scheduling.

Welding is a hands on job. Most of the job a welder will do, hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. The minimum requirements for the job are a high school diploma or equivalent, with no work experience and will be required 1 to 12 months on-the-job training until the apprentice program or job shadowing is done. After being interviewed and drug tested a employee is required to perform a weld test chosen by the employer. Multiple welding processes will be used during the line of work. Shielded Metal Arc Welding is also known as stick welding. A Welder who is welding pipe in the field most likely will use this processes. SMAW or stick is metal covered with some sort of flux in order to preserve a weld while it is being made. Gas Metal Arc Welding is a wire fed process that does not require a flux coating but is required some form of bottled gas. GMAW is mostly used for fabrication and other thinner metals. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding is the hardest process of them all. The process is different from all using different metals to combined into one. GTAW constises of a gas mixture of 75% argon and 25% oxygen. Last is Flux Cored Arc Welding, also known as FCAW is a mixture of both SMAW and GMAW. FCAW is a wire fed process like GMAW or mig. Flux core has a flux covered core and is like stick but stick has the
In our phone interview with Cecil Collins, a former IE for Ingalls Shipbuilding, he explained to us the importance of productivity measurement from his role as lead support for the LPD contract. The IE’s that support the various crafts track the performance of their specific areas of focus, pointing out anomalies in the performance of their specific craft. We have been told that there are instances where Ingalls has to assign Quality Engineers to certain areas in the shipyard to sign off on the quality of work before it can be moved to the following process. Minimal errors in the manufacturing processes can cause major issues in downstream production. Because of this, Ingalls has a high focus on manufacturing in the beginning of the processes. The construction of the ship is similar to building blocks. Ensuring the beginning steps are done correctly is vital. For example, if a bulkhead is in the fabrication shop and the welder creates the weld in the wrong place, according to the specifications of the design, it is easier to break the weld and re-weld the bulkhead according to the specifications of the design at that point than it is to navigate to that specific bulkhead after it has been welded in its specific location on the ship. If this issue is not found at the beginning stage of the process, it costs Ingalls hours of re-work that may not be accounted for in the
Aircrafts undergo a variety of stresses, strains, vibrations, and detrimental environments. It is important to inspect the aircraft regularly in order to keep the aircraft operable, which inspections of the aircraft is a big part of proper maintenance. There are many types of inspection; the most common one is pre-flight inspection and post-flight inspection. Under the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), a pre-flight inspection is mandatory for Pilot Proficiency Check. During a pre-flight inspection, the pilot should use the pre-flight checklist to perform an inspection on the exterior and interior of the aircraft. It is a chance for the pilot to check any defects on the aircraft that may cause a problem, and the readability of the radio signals.
Welding is an art, science, and high paying career all in one. Welding is the most effective way to join two pieces of metal, it is the only way to join them so they act as one. Numerous things in our daily lives has been welded from coffeepots to skyscrapers. Welding can be done almost anywhere outdoors, indoors, underwater, and even space (“Welding Basics”). It is practically

Product designing, in this stage for continuous quality improvement the parameters of the design gets changed and the level of tolerance gets altered. This is very difficult for the manufacturing companies in implementation stage.
In this report we want to know how process in manufacturing is done, what they consider in this manufacturing process and different organizations in production process.

I Auditors will look for continuous improvement in the system. These improvements can include better education of employees, better communication of ideas from and to employees, better reporting of environmental impacts within the company, and improved identification of environmental aspects.
