Welding is a versatile and extremely useful career that is very important in today’s world. The versatile nature of welding allows it to be done either indoors or out and many different places and environments ranging from scaffolding hundreds of feet above a city street as well as deep below the surface of the ocean. A professional welder has the ability to work in an open setting or in a confined space equally well. The ability to weld in any environment and at any time makes an individual an extremely valuable asset in today’s world. Employment for welders is projected to grow about 6% from 2012 to 2022. There are numerous areas which require skilled welders such as construction sites, off shore oil rigs, the military, the automotive …show more content…
industry and metal shops scattered throughout schools all across the United States. Due to the necessity for experienced welders, welding is a high-paying career. Although there are many opportunities and financial benefits to welding there are some serious health hazards which can occur if a person does not take the proper precautions.
The most obvious hazard deals with being burned by the superheated flame of the torch itself. One must pay particular attention to all safety equipment protocol such as wearing the proper clothing, proper covering such as the heavy duty apron, heavy duty gloves and of course boots, preferably steel toed. A second but very real hazard deals with the damage which can occur to one’s eyes if the proper precautions are not taken. The lite given off by the torch is intense. Anyone who has been anywhere near someone welding knows how severe it can be. There are several different options available for eye protection one can choose from. These range from goggles and visors, which cover just the eyes, to the most well-known full face shield. The face shield not only protects the eyes but the head and face as well. Unfortunately it only takes a few moments of unprotected welding to permanently damage a person’s eyes. Although this could be as simple as having an after image which may last a day or two, it could end up being as serious as someone permanently losing their eyesight due to burns on the …show more content…
retina. For those interested in becoming a welder, there are several options available to them. In the state of Mississippi there are several different vocational and technical schools which can train one interested in becoming certified in the area of welding. The main two schools in our area are Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, MGCCC, and the second is Pearl River Community College, PRC. The welding classes offered at these two colleges will take about two years to become certified. While there are several courses a student can take in order to broaden their knowledge of welding, the essential courses one must take are Flux Core Arc Welding, Shield Metal Arc Welding and Gas metal arc welding. As mentioned earlier any technical school with classes in welding will offer these classes for a student to take. Flux core arc welding is typically used for projects which require welds to be made in tight spaces.
Flux core arc welding utilizes continuous-fed consumable electrodes with constant voltage. This process can be used for both automated as well as semi-automated welding processes. Flux core arc welding offers consistent welds at a relatively high rate of speed. The main advantage of Flux core arc welding is its versatility. This process can be used in tight and awkward spaces where other types of welding may not be possible. Typically, flux core arc welding is used in conjunction with low alloy steel, stainless steel and high nickel alloys ( Flex Core Arc Welding
1) Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), or manual arc welding is used for structural and high-stress industrial applications. These types of welds are required to withstand stress as well as bear heavy loads. Common examples of these types of welds can be seen in trusses, structural metal products, tanks as well as a variety of production equipment. The power source for shielded metal arc welding consists of continuous-fed consumable electrodes with an alternating current. Shielded metal arc welding is used for automated and semi-automated welding processes. Aside from being extremely versatile and simple to use, manual arc welding is used for ductile iron, carbon steel, steel alloys and stainless steel (SMAW 1). The third style of welding is gas metal arc welding (GMAW.) These are the most common types of welding due to their versatility and consistent high quality of the weld itself. Gas Metal Arc Welding can be used in a multitude of industrial application areas. Typically gas metal arc welding is used to join or seal flat surfaces and large pieces. Although it is not used for structural welds, it is an extremely effective process for enclosures such as houses, marine tanks and production equipment. Gas metal arc welding is used on a wide variety of metals. In addition to its versatility provide good beads with minimal negative left over such as slag or spatter (GMAW 1). These particular classes can offer an individual the essential skills they will need in order to pursue a career in welding. Once a person has taken and passed the required courses, they will become a certified welder. With proper training and certification a welder can now look for employment. If one has the proper qualifications showing they are trained and capable for the career of welding, their opportunity for employment increases significantly. Although wages do vary, most welders make around seventeen dollars and forty-five cents an hour. Yearly salaries for welders tend to range from around twenty-five thousand to fifty-six thousand. Retirement plans and other benefits tend to vary, depending on whether or not the individual is either self-employed or works for a larger company. Opinions vary as to whether being self-employed or working for a company is preferred. For the most part many welders are Self-employed. While there are advantages to both the primary advantage of working for a company is that health care and other insurance is readily available. On the other hand those welders who are self-employed are able to work on several different work sites during the course of a year and can therefore make more money. According to which company, if any, an individual works for the work hours for experienced welders can vary. One factor is the environment in which a welder must work. With the proper training and certification a welder is able to work under nearly any conditions. Welding is a rewarding career in the long run for the self-motivated person because welders can always work on their own equipment. Currently there are around twenty thousand eight-hundred openings per year for experienced welders. The available jobs for a trained individual are limited only by the type of welding and working conditions he or she is qualified, this is why education is so critical. An individual who is interested in welding shout try to get as much education and training as possible. Education is the key, without that a person cannot hope to progress in welding or any other chosen career choices. There are lots of health risk involved in welding. Surprisingly enough the largest threat for welders is not the brightness of the torch, it is in fact the fumes which are given off. Welding rods contain manganese and inhaling these fumes can cause serious health problems such as serious neurological damage. There has been a direct correlation between inhaling welding fumes and Parkinson’s. Welding fumes can cause a lot of danger to a person’s health. Welding is one the highest paying jobs today and lots of colleges offer courses to help you learn the things you need to learn to get a decent welding job. There are lots of industries and work places today that are looking for welders. Welding is a job that a person can live off of if they have a degree in the welding field or if a person is experienced. Welding is needed today almost in all work places. It is good to learn how to weld just in case you ever need to work on or you are working with metal. Although welding is rough on your health it has many benefits to go along with it. I would choose the welding field because of the benefits, well paying, and is something you could almost use in everyday life.

Thomas Jefferson said, “I find that the harder I work, the less I call it work”. I have often found myself in situations where I needed to fix something but could not because it is metal. I believe this might be why I began to show interest in welding. There is great satisfaction in being able to create or fix a metal object on your own. As a Certified Welder, I will be able to combine my hardworking drive with my personal interest in metal working to be a successful welder. This paper will explore the job description, requirements, and salary expectation for a Certified Welder.
Welding is a dangerous job because you can hurt your eyes from the flash if you don’t wear eye protection. Yes pipeline welding dangerous, but it is wrong because it is only dangerous when proper safety precautions aren’t taking place. Welding is dangerous because pieces of metal can fall on you and you can get flash burn. And you can be exposed to gases, fires, explosions, and electric shock. But the only way these things happen is when safety measures are ignored.
Welding is a excellent career choice for those who like to build things with their hands and have a strong attention to detail. It requires an extensive amount of knowledge and skill but for those who get a solid grasp of the respected trade they're rewarded with tremendous job opportunities and first-rate pay.
Welding is the process of joining two metals together by heating them up to molten hot temperatures, and then manipulating the molten weld puddle to create a weld bead. A lot is involved with welding like metal cleaning, fit up, cutting, making measurements, making sure you’re using the correct welding processes, and much more.
Skills of welding students welding program learn the art of heating and shaping metal, required classes may include advanced mathematics. To become a certified welder you are required for two year educational high school or college. Travel opportunities for welders you prefer the open or even the open ocean to a cramped office, life style of the ‘’road warrior’ ’welder could lead to an exciting career once you’ve completed a welding program, these travel bound welders are used to going across the country in order to work on huge projects. The advantage of becoming a welder you have plenty of travel opportunities your afford to work on land/or ocean.
The aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid afor M.I.G is something anyone can learn easily, it’s inexpensive to afford. 110v machines don't bring out the best power to weld, because these machines do not have a good duty cycle. Most people prefer 220v machines because they produce more work, even if they are more expensive. GMAW is the cheapest, most reliable process for welding. T.I.G. (Tungsten Inert Gas) is a challenging process to learn.
Face and Eye Protection: It is mandatory to wear a face guard and wearing of air/water-tight goggles in order to protect against splatter of burning particles, liquid splatter, radiation, dust and splatter from chemicals. The Site risks and safety: Handling and transporting gear: The pedestrian doesn’t have right of way over moving site vehicles, in particular fork-lift trucks. It is forbidden to convey people on a self-propelled truck or to climb on the truck to balance the load. The operating of trucks, cradles, cranes and loaders is regulated by medical fitness, training and information about the site risks and safety instructions.
Long sleeve shirts are also used for heat protection and keeping sparks from burning a welders skin. The welding helmet is necessary for the welder to watch as the weld is being formed on the metal. When the welder strikes an arc it is incredibly bright and can only be seen through the welding helmet which has a dark tinted lens. Now there are electric welding helmets that are light before the arc is struck and instantly become dark when the welder sticks an arc,
Although it costs a lot more than riveting, it is a lot better. The temperatures in welding are very high. They can be made by either using an oxy-acetylene flame or an electric arc. Flux is required for arc welding ,but is not needed for oxy-acetylene welding, as the coating of the electrode provides the flux. Crimping: What is crimping?
Welding is an art, science, and high paying career all in one. Welding is the most effective way to join two pieces of metal, it is the only way to join them so they act as one. Numerous things in our daily lives has been welded from coffeepots to skyscrapers. Welding can be done almost anywhere outdoors, indoors, underwater, and even space (“Welding Basics”). It is practically

Welding is a very important tool used in our daily lives. Welding is the process of joining two metal pieces together by applying heat. A filler helps to make the joint. Everything we use from trucks to houses have some type of welding in them. There are many types of welding careers to choose from. There is a great demand for welders today. My project was to build a table and candelabra out of metal. Most of the metal I gathered came from junk yards and had to be cleaned of rust.
"Arcs and Sparks!" was my understanding of welding at the beginning. Surprisingly, now I am applying the graduate studies for welding engineering which is the most fascinating area in engineering in my heart. What happened in the past three years? I have been on my own way to explore the world of materials science and engineering since the childhood. I grew up besides the SJ Petroleum Machinery Co., influenced by many engineers, I had a natural interest in such activities as hands-on practice, solving problems and making small objects gradually. Satisfyingly, I can always find my way.
Welding helmets have proved to be the most vital piece of protective gear if you are practicing welding whether as a hobby or as a profession. They are available in a wide range of colors and configurations, thus making them a welder’s most personalized accessory. It is a fact that the helmets visual features are what will mostly catch your attention, but it is advisable that you overlook such features and consider its other features that will best protect your eyes.
