More than 140 years ago a company named Rio Tinto was incorporated as legit business, in the year 1873 they opened an old mine copper mine on Spain River named Rio Tinto also known as “Red river”. As time went by year 1905 in New South Wales Australia the Zinc Corporation was formed for the Zinc bearing mine waste at the broken Hill to be treated. Expanding to other countries was the main focus for chairman Sir Auckland Campbell and the management team that he led. 24 years later the was a merge between the two united kingdom firm known as The Imperial Smelting resulting in formation of Zinc Corporation which got listed in London. As the company was growing abroad they decided to sell two thirds of Rio Tinto based in Spain so that they can pump money into new developments in other countries.
Extensive bauxite deposit was discovered at wepra far north Queensland Australia, that discovery led to Rio Tinto’s entry into aluminium and formation of Comalco limited that was in the year 1956. Six years later Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia was formed, in the year 1966 the first exports to Japan, in Western Australia Rio Tinto launched it’s iron ore operations with the launch of Hamersley iron mount from price mine. Owners of the world largest deposit of industrial mineral borates, that has hundreds of everyday uses Borax was acquired by Rio Tinto in 1968. Things went bad for Rio Tinto when it’s participation in Cornwall’s ancient tin mining industry in the United Kingdom ended due to declining demand and prices for the metal. The tar creek mining site originally was owned by a Native American tribe, the Quapaw. The Quapaw wanted to keep these lands, but the Bureau of Indian Affairs deemed members opposing a transaction to mining companies “incompetent” (1). In such a case the business could continue and the Bureau of Indian Affairs sold the lands to mining companies. In essence these lands were stolen from the Quapaw because they were ripe for mining. These mines were then used from approximately 1891 to 1970. In the 79 years the mines were open 1.7 million metric tons (~3.75 billion pounds) of lead and 8.8 million metric tons (~19.4 billion pounds) of zinc were withdrawn from the mine (2). The entire area around Tar Creek is known as the tri-state mining area. This tri-state area was a massive source of metals. This area accounted for 35% of the all worldwide metal for a decade. It also provided the majority of metals the United States used in World wars I and II (3).

A bauxite is a mixture consisting of hydrated aluminum oxide minerals and mineral impurities which are formed by weathered aluminum bearing rocks. In 1891 bauxite was mined in Alabama from the Rock Run. However, mining came to a sudden stop because metallurgical grade bauxite became very hard to obtain. Production started back up in 1927 and has been running on a maintained basis. Due to irregular distributions of bauxite deposits, exploratory test drilling must be conducted before any mining. At this time legislation and public opinion all favored management. There were few protections for the worker's safety. Today's industrial employees are better off than their colleagues in the past. Their chances of being killed in an industrial accident are less than half of that of their predecessors of 60 years ago. According to National safety Council (NSC), the current death rate from work-related injuries is approximately 4 per 100,000, or less than a third of the rate of 50 years ago. Improvements in safety up to now have been the result of pressure for legislation to promote health and safety, the steadily increasing cost associated with accidents and injuries, and the professionalization of safety as an occupation. When the industrial sector began to grow in the United States, hazardous working conditions were commonplace. Following the Civil War, the seeds of the safety movement were sown in this country. Factory inspection was introduced in Massachusetts in 1867. In 1868 the first barrier safeguard was patented. In 1869 the Pennsylvania legislature passed a mine safety law requiring two exits from all mines. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was established in 1869 to study industrial accidents and report pertinent information about hose accidents. The following decade saw little progress in the safety movement until 1877, when the Massachusetts legislature passed a law requiring safeguards for hazardous machinery. In 1877 the Employers' Liability Law was passed. In 1892, the first safety program was established in a steel plant in Illinois, in response to the explosion of a flywheel in that company.
