Colombia lies in the northern most part of South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea the Bogota is the capital of Colombia. Bordering between Panama and Venezuela and bordering the North Pacific Ocean, between Ecuador and Panama. The size of Colombia is 1,138,910 square kilometers less than three times the size of the state of Montana. Mainland territory divided into four major geographic regions. Andean highlands are composed of three mountain ranges and overriding valleys and Caribbean lowlands; Pacific lowlands; and llanos and tropical rainforest of Eastern Colombia. Colombia also has small islands in both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. Climate in Colombia has unique variety in temperature resulting in changing differences in elevation not much seasonal variation. The rocky terrain cut by large rivers that flow into the Caribbean the Pacific. The Amazon and the Orinoco facilitates the construction of enormous reservoirs, which have steadily increased the country’s generation of energy and supply of drinking water.
The broad range of topographical elevations has encouraged agricultural expansion whose diverse production of food constitutes an important part of the Colombian economy. The agricultural sector contributed 14% of GDP, excluding coffee, with a production worth almost 11 billion US. In the hot lowlands of the Caribbean heartland, the inter-montages valleys, and the savannas of Orinoquia, there are immense plantations of bananas, sugar cane, rice, cotton, soybeans and sorghum, and large cattle farms that produce meat and dairy products. SUMMARY
The future of Colombia is very bright; no country on this earth is in a better position with many rainforest, and strapping coffee reserves. Colombia began as a country under fire. Fighting to gain their independence from Spain, and enduring a civil war .The period of corrupt government and the cartel trying to keep a strong hold over Colombia. The country of cocaine and kidnappings is the best uncharted adventure haven in South America. If you ever get a chance to visit the beautiful country of Colombia do so it would be a great experience.
Colombia is famous for many types of cuisine. In America, different states/areas are known for different types of food. For example, the coastline has great seafood and the south has awesome comfort food. Colombia is divided into 32 departments, or country subdivisions. Each area has unique dishes that reflect their department.
The 19th century set the stage for different policies that lead to the extending of America’s power, which is defined as imperialism. Imperialism started for different reasons like the Americans wanting the U.S. to expand or explore the unknown land, or even some feared existing resources in U.S. might eventually dry up. The reason imperialism started doesn’t really matter, but more of what it caused. Imperialism lead to Cuban assistance, the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to America, and Yellow Journalism.
There was piece in the streets, no more bombs, less violence, kidnapping, etc… I want people outside of Colombia to know about what truly Colombia is about. We always take into the fact that when people associate Colombia they associate it with the negative actions of Pablo Escobar and how he smuggled Cocaine into the United States. When people associate Colombia, they do it with Pablo Escobar, when the actual reality is that Pablo Escobar was at war with
It is my intention to investigate the relationship with Pablo Escobar and the development of Colombia as this is a very controversial and wide topic that covers many aspects regarding the economic growth of Columbia. The topic "changing communities" can be interpreted many ways for this topic, changing communities shall be measured in economic development, change in culture and geographic development. In this research paper I am going to discover Pablo Escobar's relationship with the development of Colombia as in the early stages of Escobar's reign over Columbia and the drug world he was coined the nickname "the robin hood of Colombia" for his millions of US dollars
Colombia has struggled throughout the years battling various terrorist groups. The FARC is the most dangerous terrorist organization that the country has continually fought for over four decades. Drug trafficking, bombings, and political leader targeted attacks are the tactics used by this terrorist organization in hopes to gain political power. Their agenda is geared to overtake the Colombian government to make the country into a socialist society. Various efforts and attempts in conjunction with the US government have led to a weakened state of the FARC. However, the journey to defeat this terrorist group continues.
In order to understand the topic, it is important that you know about Colombia’s geographic location, in this way you will learn how our ethnicity was formed. The Republic of Colombia is located in the northwestern region of South America, bordering to the east with Venezuela and Brazil, to the south with Ecuador and Peru, to the North West with the Pacific Ocean and Panama, to the North with the Caribbean Sea. Cartagena, known as the Heroic city, is located in the North of Colombia. It was founded in 1533 by Don Pedro de Heredia, a Spanish conqueror. Due to its excellent geographic location, from this time Cartagena became the most important port in South America.
Haiti as a rich history, filled with many peoples’ blood and countless hopes of freedom. With such a rich history, the country has yet to become financially stable because of their past. From the beginning of the French settlement where slaves were brought over from Africa to harvest crops, to the dictatorship of the Duvalier family. Haiti has yet to see a time when they are not in need of help. After the racial caste systems were set in place, many people would not see a truly independent country. When France finally gave independence to Haiti, they did it for a price. After they paid that price, the US occupied them because of their location and many resources. Every year in Haiti’s history as a nation and before has effects on the world today. These effects are not hidden in fine print, but blatantly found within Haiti and those who have been involved with Haiti.
the world's leading coca producer. Twenty years ago almost no coca was grown in Colombia. Only
The Dutch originally settled Suriname in 1667, after acquiring it from the British in exchange for what would later become New York City, then known as New Amsterdam. Coffee and sugar plantations were created and worked by slaves that were brought in from Africa, however slavery was abolished in 1863, leading to indentured servants being brought in from China and Java (BBC News 2012). Plantations became less important as labor costs were rising, so rice, bananas and citrus replaced coffee, sugar and cocoa as traditional crop exports.
Nowadays, when someone thinks of Colombia, they unfortunately almost always think of two things, coffee and cocaine (with its associated guerilla warfare). It is true that during the last 50 years these two products, one legal, and the other not, have been great monetary contributors to the Colombian economy. Coffee is Colombia’s principal agricultural product, and it is also the country’s second largest export. The production of coffee uses 300,000 farms and employs almost one million people (Steiner 6). Conversely, cocaine is a completely illegal product, but it earns almost twice as much money as coffee (Steiner 6). Also, in contrast with the production of coffee, cocaine uses fewer employees but earns more money (Steiner 6). The history of the Colombian drug trade is something relatively recent, given that it pertains to the last 50 years of contemporary Colombian history. After World War II, there is evidence of the, “exportation of drugs from Colombia to the United States…since the 1950s Medellín was an international center of drug trade…” (Salazar 78). Basically, the drug trade had its small beginnings in the 1950s, and in the 1960s the different groups of drug lords began to consolidate into drug cartels. “The activity of dealing drugs in Colombia dates back to the 1970s with the cultivation and exportation of marijuana…” (Thoumi 139). In the 1970s, drug lords like Pablo Escobar, an extremely powerful mafia-like leader of the Colombian drug ring, took control and created a completely illegal and clandestine economy centered around narcotics. Little by little, these groups of drug lords and their cohorts, who divided themselves regionally, began to gain control. Eventually the situat...
Religion in Latin America has always been tied closely to Catholicism because of the influence of Europeans who came to settle South America, bringing along their Catholic foundation. With the early formations of governments in Latin America, church and state were closely linked. The church had significant influence over what happened in the political realm of the countries’ relations. The case was no different for Colombia. The Catholic church has played a significant role in the history of Colombia, assuming an esteemed status in the country and exercising control over different areas of the government and public affairs, but as time passed its role in power has taken a slight downturn.
There is a lot of history in Colombia! Independence was not made until Simon Bolivar made an army to defeat spanish troops from the battle of Boyaca in 1819. The FARC and the AUC had business with the drug trade. In 1970 and 1980 the Colombian industry grew from where it was in the past. In the year 1990 a national assembly with indigenous groups, people originally from the area country and the nontraditional parties got together to rewrite the constitution in the year 1886.
Colombia is known for their exportation of coal and oil. This has attracted the interest of foreign nations, which has led to Colombia gaining new trading partners. Globalization is defined as integration between countries through products and ideas. Through Colombia’s exportation of coal and oil they have been able to integrate themselves into the international community. Integration into the global market has brought new investors to Colombia, some of these investors include: the United States, China, and Spain. Due to the increase of investors into the oil and mining industries the economy has been relatively stable and has increased jobs for citizens. With a stable economy citizens are able to enjoy a better quality of life, the prices
