Reflexology Reflexology is a technique where pressure is applied to the feet, ears, and hands which results in pain relief and relaxation. The pressure that is applied to these areas are thought to correspond to various organs and systems in the body. A licensed reflexologist typically performs this practice. Although, chiropractors, physical therapist, and massage therapist have been known to perform this technique as well. Reflexologist utilize many tools to aid in patient relief; rubber balls, sticks of wood, and rubber bands. (3) Those who seek reflexologist are dealing with stress or pain from a recent injury. The first mention of reflexology was in hieroglyphs of the ancient Egyptians. There is no way to determine if the reflexology that was being performed during those times were similar to what we perform today, but never the less that was the earliest mention. Many years later a man by the name of William H. Fitzgerald created this idea of the zone theory. The zone theory was the idea of pressure being applied to bony eminences or zones that corresponded to injury or pain. (1) After performing this technique on many patients, William discovered that not only was the pain dissipating but the underlying cause was also resolving. Shelby Riley, a medical doctor, started working very closely with Fitzgerald and they continued to develop the zone theory. Dr. Riley created a horizontal zone chart that went along with the longitudinal one Fitzgerald has created earlier in his research. Que in Eunice Ingham, the woman that is given the credit for what we all know as reflexology today, started working with Dr. Riley. She was a physical therapist who had a large interest in the zone theory. (1) During the 1930’s, she started to develop foot reflex therapy. From there she created the reflexology that we know today.
