1.2 TYPES OF PAVEMENTS Highway pavements are of two types;
a. Flexible pavement
b. Rigid pavement
1.2.1 Flexible pavement These pavements which reflect the deformation of subgrade and the subsequent layers to the surface. Flexible, usually asphalt, is laid with no reinforcement or with a specialized fabric reinforcement that permits limited flow or repositioning of the roadbed underground changes.
The design of flexible pavement is based on load distributing characteristic of the component layers. The black top pavement including water & gravel bound macadam fall in this category.
Flexible pavement on the whole has low or negligible flexible strength flexible in their structural action. The flexible pavement layers transmit the vertical

To be sustained by this layer, in addition to wear and tear, the lower layer have to take up only lesser magnitude of stress as there is no direct wearing action due to traffic loads, therefore inferior material with lower cast can be used in the lower layers. A typical sketch of flexible pavements is given in Figure 1.2. Figure1.2 Flexible Pavement
1.2.2 Rigid pavement The rigid characteristic of the pavement are associated with rigidity or flexural strength or slab action so the load is distributed over a wide area of subgrade soil. Rigid pavement is laid in slabs with steel reinforcement. The rigid pavements are made of cement concrete either plan, reinforced or prestressed concrete. Critical condition of stress in the rigid pavement is the maximum flexural stress occurring in the slab due to wheel load and the temperature changes. Rigid pavement is designed and analyzed by using the elastic theory.A typical sketch of rigid pavement is given in Figure 1.3. Figure1.3 Rigid Pavement.
Advantages of Rigid Pavement
Rigid pavement lasts much, much longer years compared to flexible
With this tread depth, you can use your truck on multiple surfaces without getting stuck. Also, the tread patterns offer enough stability and support for your vehicle.
A Mark IV Toyota Supra and Chevy Camaro SS pull up at a red light on a lonesome stretch of flat road amongst a dimming blue sky; the drivers nod at one another, rev the engines, and jam the accelerator pedals. When two drivers try to outrace each other on public streets, automobile driving makes a turn into the illegal form of motor racing known as street racing. Several possible causes to this aggressive street driving include a recent release of movies that inspire racing by the desire to fulfill the adrenaline rush raging in young people, the overall convenience of street racing, and most importantly, a way for teenagers to achieve nobility status in a short a time.
‘Confront scourge of sexual abuse, stand up for children, Inuit leaders demand ‘, is an article written by Kristy Kirkup, who reports the impact on indigenous people of Canada due to the disregard and lack of respect from the government for years. Indian residential school systems are disastrous mistakes that wreaked havoc on Canada’s Aboriginal groups. It later, lead to the tragedy that many aboriginal parents do not know how to treat their children in a good way. Abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, is one of most serious and common issues that still affects several aboriginal communities. Indigenous leaders and victims told The Canadian Press the level of abuse in some communities is shockingly high, although there is limited data that indicate exactly how pervasive the problem is across the country. Sexual abuse had gone through residential schools over several generations. The cycle abuse is continuing to infect subsequent generations in recent years. Prominent Inuit politicians are urging Canada’s leaders who recognize the importance of the
Bruce Beresford’s film, Paradise Road, is based on the true historical events that followed the attack of the Vyner Brooke, where the hardships of the circumstances tested the characters in ways that both support and challenge the statement of ‘who we are is truly tested and proven when we encounter conflict’. Conflict is defined as “a serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one”, and can be perceived in many ways. How someone perceives conflict is beyond their control, as it may be entirely influenced by others and their actions, their perception
Human transportation has always had an impact on the environment, with cars having arguably the largest impact. According to Superfreakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner transportation immediately prior to the development of cars was entirely depended on horses and horse-drawn carriages. By the end of the 19th century, New York had around two-hundred-thousand horses roaming the streets. Each horse created around thirty-five pounds of feces per day. The introduction of cars was expected to provide a much cleaner solution to transportation; however, this was a misconception. In reality, according to Brandon Keim, writer for Nautilis, the late 19th and early 20th centuries were actually the age of street cars. These street cars were
In determining how to make the sidewalks a better place for everyone, one must consider what it is that renders the sidewalks “better.” What does “better” encompass? Would eliminating homelessness, the “broken windows,” cause people to feel safer on the streets? Alternatively, would eliminating the stigma surrounding the homeless allow people to see the sidewalk workers as beneficial contributors to the sidewalk? With these ideas in mind and with knowledge of New York sidewalks from Mitchell Duneier’s novel, Sidewalk, I can contemplate the actions I would take to make the sidewalks a better place for everyone, if I had necessary, and assumedly unlimited, power to do so.
The constant darkness that surrounds the main setting. The heavy anticipation of not knowing what’s going to happen next. The sudden silence that consumes the audience's mind with the feeling that something horrific is about to happen. These are just some of the emotions that might be running through your mind as you sit down to watch the 2011 film Munger Road. This movie centers on the idea of one urban myth, which is that several decades ago, a school bus full of kids was traveling down Munger Road when they attempted to cross a pair of train tracks, but the bus was struck by a train, killing every single child on board. The urban myth then goes that is you put baby powder on your back bumper, drive and stop on the train track, and then
Sidewalks an overlooked luxury, a path for everyone to take that makes their lives a bit easier. Sometimes I feel like a sidewalk, hilariously enough, but not because I am made of concrete, because it is a hand to hold through life or support through a hard time and that is what I have seen, my path. And now it is what I hope to help others find, I wish to be a path for the weary. We all know a person that is our sidewalk, our support from this jungle of a world. My support has always been my family, they are a very important aspect in my life. My family helped shape me into the “sidewalk” I try to be. That is why I would like to be support for another because I know the lost feeling and how fantastic it feels to take that weight off your shoulders with the help of a friend.
This paper will explore the techniques used to build road embankments over frozen soil. In exploring these techniques, every effort will be made to demonstrate the physical concept that is pertinent.
Introduction of wheeled vehicles increased the need for roads. Paved roads were introduced in Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley civilisation. Persian and Roman empires constructed stone-paved roads, in classical antiquity. These roads were used by armies, so to travel long distances in a short period. Tar-paved roads were known to exist in medieval Caliphate.
Reinforced concrete is stronger than basic concrete. Steel reinforcing bars known as rebar is incorporated in the concrete structure to act together in resisting the force. The steel reinforcing bars absorbs tensile and compression because plain conc...
Also, concrete is easy to maintain which means it does not need much repair. The sidewalks could enhance the looks of the town with the decorative sidewalks. On a serious note, cars are less likely to run on a sidewalk with a high shoulder pavement. Cars are heavier than people, so when they make direct contact while the vehicle is in motion the person can be seriously injured. Pedestrians and drivers cannot share the same road.
During my under graduation I have learnt only about basics of pavement materials and different layers of pavements. It was only after studying graduate courses I realized how limited my knowledge was and I need to work very hard and explore more in this vast field. During first year of my graduate study I have studied Pavements Materials, Pavement Design and Evaluation, Highway Construction Practices and these graduate courses opened a new paradigm for me to the way I looked at pavement engineering. This prompted me to look at it as a field full of challenges which make it even more dynamic and op...
The development of urban transportation has not changed with the cities; cities have changed with transportation. This chapter offers an insight into the Past and the future of Urban transportation and is split up into a number of different sections. It includes a timeline of the different forms of transport innovations, starting from the earliest stages of urban transport, dating back to the omnibus (the first type of urban transportation) and working in a chronological order until eventually reaching the automobile. However, these changes in Urban transport did not happen for no reason. Different factors within society meant urban transport needed to evolve; points will be made on why society needed this evolution. In contrast I will observe the problems urban transport has caused in society as a result of its rapid progression. Taking account of both arguments for the evolution of urban transport, I will look at where it will go in the future.
Safety in every aspect of my life is very important. From the moment we step out of our homes we take safety measures such as locking all doors to keep thieves out and or ensuring the stove and any electronics are off to avoid any fire. In this essay I will discuss different safety topics that we encounter on daily basis.
