How to define a nonprofit organization? According to Anheier (2000), nonprofit organizations vary greatly in the legal and organizational forms, that is, they are different in terms with associations, foundation and company, etc. Some of them have the model just like government agency, and others can be close to business enterprises [(Ruth, T. (2011), Young, D. (1983)]. Despite these differences, there is a growing consensus on the common characteristics shared by the nonprofit organizations among the researchers (Salamon & Anheier, 1997). They are the following: organized, private, nonprofit, self-government and voluntary. The first, organized means the nonprofit organizations must have institutional reality, which separate them from the informal entities. The second part is private. Each group exists today because they were established with the desire to help those in need by providing products, good and services. In the article “Toward Nonprofit Reform in Voluntary Spirit: Lessons From the Internet”, the authors stated the that nonprofit and the voluntary sector can include professional, the paid nonprofit, and grassroots organizations (Brainard & Siplon, 2004, p. 435). From the description, we know that employee and volunteer morale is quite low, and that is the fault of the senior management. Nonprofit and for-profit businesses have multiple similarities and differences. For-profit organizations are very different from non-profit organizations because the driving goal of a for-profit organization is increasing its revenue whereas a non-profit organization will not go out of business if it suffers financial loss or does not have a bottom-line. The marketing process also differs, with the biggest differentiating factor of profit marketing is to encourage customers to buy and while the nonprofit marketing purpose is usually to encourage people to give. This means that the return on investment differs between the two. Although the principles of marketing remain the same, some of the methods must, of necessity, be different. Because of the intense involvement in the community as well as support from government, agencies non-profit firms should not compete in the same markets as for profit companies nor in anyway position their organization in any way to give the impression that their efforts could be commercial based (Nelson, 2002).
The choices each of us make impact the perspectives we hold to this day over many controversial issues. For example, one debate includes defining the ethics of charity. Some people suggest that charity creates happy and well-off people through the act of donation. However, they fail to recognize that charity illustrates the ugly behavior of donating for promotion of self-image versus the false intent of supporting others needs. Charity is defined as organizations that raise money in support of a cause, but this idea creates a negative society. People should be encouraged to provide for themselves BECAUSE money alters good into self-interest,consequently tainting the purpose of charity.
Throughout this course my paradigms of what a nonprofit organization have been challenged as we have considered the major aspects and leadership challenges of these organizations. Having worked with for profit and nonprofit organizations in the past I was quite confident that I had a clear understanding of the distinctions between the two. I had worked in organizations that regularly used volunteers to accomplish their mission and felt that the management of these processes were simplistic. Despite these misconceptions, I found that I was able to learn a tremendous amount through our reading, peer interactions, group projects and equally important, my volunteer service as part of this course.
