Introduction The initial step involved in the development of a health promotion program is to conduct what is known as a needs assessment. The purpose of the needs assessment is to collect data regarding the health needs of individuals. In addition to this, the needs assessment helps with determining a place to support the program as well as the resources that will provide the status on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the program. Furthermore, the results from the needs assessment provide a basis towards the effort in planning a health promotion program which will focus on the health issue(s) and concern(s) which have been identified by the needs assessment (Fertman & Allensworth, 2010).
Assessing health There are five dimensions of health that are measured when assessing health. They are physical health, mental health, social health, environmental health, and spiritual health. “Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.

The six dimensions of health are physical wellness, emotional wellness, intellectual wellness, spiritual wellness, interpersonal and social wellness, and environmental or planetary wellness. Out of these six dimensions my vigorous three would have to be emotional wellness, spiritual wellness, and interpersonal and social wellness. A good assessment is about relationship building, engaging families in an exploration of their strengths, values and goals to build mutual trust and respect. Then when problems do arise, this relationship can be the foundation of open communication allowing the doors to open for identification of additional supports needed to reduce or eliminate the factors causing harm.

Intellectual health describes a person ability to reinforce his experiences through learnings. A socially healthy person is one who can forge strong bonds within his acquaintances and to be able to cope up the usual day-to-day drama. Spiritual wellness involves the strengthening of ones’ belief and at the same time being open to new beliefs. And a physically healthy person takes care of his body and practices healthy habits.
