In the movie, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, Daniel is a freelance voice actor that quits his job one day over a disagreement over a script and throws a wild birthday party for Chris, one of his three children with Miranda. He is a devoted and loving father to all three children, Chris, Lydia, and Natalie but Miranda believes he is an unreliable husband. The wild birthday party with a petting zoo is the last straw for Miranda. She had to leave work and go home due to a neighbor's complaint and is angry that Daniel planned the party behind her back. They get into an argument and she files for divorce. The judge, at the first custody hearing, grants Miranda sole custody of the children since Daniel has neither a residence nor a steady job. He states that if Daniel gets a steady job and a residence suitable for children within three months, he will allow Daniel and Miranda to share joint custody. Daniel attempts to rebuild his life. When he learns that Miranda intends to hire a housekeeper/nanny and refuses to allow him to watch the children, he disguises himself as a 70year old scottish lady and is hired by Miranda. An example of this was in the movie was when Daniel quit his job and eventually after reexamining his situation, he was hired at a television company. He was also made the transition to Mrs. Doubtfire in order to care for his children. Although he made the change to Mrs. Doubtfire out of a need to care for his children, he made the change to work in the TV station because he wanted to change and improve his situation with his family. The movie Mrs. Doubtfire has many scenes where nonverbal communication takes places. Like in the scene where the song “Dude Looks Like a Lady” plays, it demonstrates nonverbal communication by Daniel’s paralanguage. Like stated in the textbook Interact by Verderber and MacGeorge on page 139, “paralanguage is variation in the voice.” Paralanguage includes pitch, volume, rate, quality, and intonation. With Daniel having a job that requires him to use paralanguage makes it easier for him to fool everyone when he is dressed up as a woman. He is able to change the pitch in his voice higher than normally to sound like a lady. He also uses quality, which is described on page 140 “the sound of a person’s voice.” His voice as Mrs. Doubtfire is very smooth as how a sweet elderly woman should sound like.

The main character, Mildred Pierce, is a very attractive housewife of 29, raising two daughters, Ray and Veda. Although Mildred loves both her daughters, Veda is a particular obsession with Mildred. She constantly slaves away throughout the novel to do whatever she can to make Veda happy, despite the constant abuse and deception Veda inflicts upon Mildred. After a divorce from her first husband, Bert, in the opening pages of the novel, Mildred is forced to sacrifice her pride and become a waitress in order to support her family. If Veda were ever to find out, she would be appalled; a constantly recurring theme throughout this story is Veda’s pride and arrogance, and her condemnation of jobs she deems to be menial. Mildred’s main goal is to nurture Veda’s musical talents, and manages to pay for expensive music lessons from her meager salaries as a waitress and pie baker. However, Mildred’s luck is soon to change, as she takes up with an attorney and former partner of Bert, Wally. Mildred is able to use Wally’s business and real estate savvy to build a restaurant out of a deserted model home, and from there create a thriving chain of three food businesses. After becoming bored with Wally, however, Mildred craves a relationship with another man, a prestigious local man named Monty. Veda highly approves of her mother’s choice, as this makes her feel as if she too were more prestigious and affluent, despite having misgivings about her mother still being so low as to have an average, pedestrian job. All seems to be going well; even through Veda’s constant demands and tantrums, she still gets everything she wants, and Mildred and Monty are happy. Monty, however, falls on hard times with the coming of the Great Depression, and he constantly mooches off of Mildred’s affluence, making it a struggle for Mildred to cater to Veda’s every whim. Mildred soon dumps Monty to focus on making Veda a musical prodigy; this fails, however, when Veda is told that her piano is not up to par from a local famous music teacher. After Veda recovers from this shock, she explores the opportunities offered by an acting career, and begins to spin more webs of deception and selfishness. After Veda forces money out of a local rich family, lying and claiming their son got her pregnant, Mildred and Veda have a major argument, and Veda disowns her mother.
Faith Ringgold was born in Harlem on October 8th 1930, the great depression had just ended and although she lived in the north, racism was still going on all throughout the country. As a young child, Ringgold was often bed ridden because of harsh asthma and during this time she often would draw. In 1950 she got her own studio and started working on oil painting projects. By 1962 she had gotten her MA in Art at the City College of New York, had two daughters and had been divorced and remarried. Ringgold was greatly influenced by a family who loved storytelling and learned from her mother’s stories about the ancestry of the slaves. Ringgold was both an artist as well as a teacher of art within the New York City public schools and a professor at the University of California, San Diego. Throughout her lifetime and time of her paintings, the civil rights movement was in full force.
Eudora Welty was born on April 13, 1909, Jackson, Mississippi. Her father's name is Christian Welty, and her mother's name was Chestina Welty. She has two brothers named Edward Welty and Walter Welty. Welty grew up in a house full of books. Her mother gave her the passion of reading and writing. Eudora went to Davis Elementary School. She attended and graduated from Jackson's Central High School. Eudora had graduated from the University of Wisconsin and studied business for a year at Columbia University. Eudora earned her Bachelors degree. She also attended Mississippi University for Women. Eudora was a short story writer, novelist, and photographer. Her major themes of her books extend beyond the south-loneliness, the pain of growing up, and the for people to understand themselves. Eudora Welty grew up during the Great Depression. She was able to travel around Mississippi taking pictures of people during the Great Deppression. " Endured series of misfortunes with stoicism and forbearance." (The New York Times, Prose, 2005). Eudora Welty faced several struggles in her life such as the lose of family and having a hard time finding a job.
At the beginning of this century, ships docked in American ports with their steerages filled with European immigrants. Willa Cather’s My Antonia, contains characters that immigrate to the country of America in search of hope and a new future in the Midwest prarie. This novel can be considered an American tale because it holds the American concept of the “melting pot,” the ideal of America as the “land of opportunity,” and the character’s struggles could only have occurred in America rather than their own country.
A character can change many times throughout a novel, or film, whether it’s good or bad. It can be a character’s willingness to change or it can be a life changing journey he or she went on that made it happen. The novel, A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest J. Gaines, talks about characters such as Grant, Jefferson, and Paul along with the life changing journey they went through in their life in Bayonne, Louisiana. In most countries, women only earn between 60 and 75% of men’s wages, for the same work. Sexism is still a problem in today’s society, but it has improved since Scout’s generation in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Scout believes from an early age that girls aren’t good, and that she can avoid the judgement that comes with being a girl by not acting like one. Being a girl for Scout is less a matter of what she's born with and more a matter of what she does. Scout’s elders influence her perception of womanhood by putting preconceived sexist views in her head. In “To Kill a Mockingbird” Harper Lee shows the reader how all women are expected to act lady like and be proper through the actions of Mrs. Dubose, Jem, and Atticus.
