Biographical information Faith Ringgold was born in Harlem on October 8th 1930, the great depression had just ended and although she lived in the north, racism was still going on all throughout the country. As a young child, Ringgold was often bed ridden because of harsh asthma and during this time she often would draw. In 1950 she got her own studio and started working on oil painting projects. By 1962 she had gotten her MA in Art at the City College of New York, had two daughters and had been divorced and remarried. Ringgold was greatly influenced by a family who loved storytelling and learned from her mother’s stories about the ancestry of the slaves. Ringgold was both an artist as well as a teacher of art within the New York City public schools and a professor at the University of California, San Diego. Throughout her lifetime and time of her paintings, the civil rights movement was in full force. Artistic Style Ringgold is best known for paintings such as oil on canvas. Vera Olivia Weatherbie was an accomplished painter in her own right, regarded more so now than during her lifetime. She was born in 1909 in Vancouver and attended Brittania Secondary School. She grew up in the Strathcona neighbourhood near Chinatown in Vancouver’s East end. Her parents were strict, conservative Presbyterians, yet somehow she was able to persuade them to let her attend the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (VSDAA) at the young age of 16.
The book by Faith Ringgold entitled Faith Ringgold, explains the story of a mother and daughter during the Harlem Renaissance era in New York. According to the book, the series deals with many generational issues of a middle class black family and focuses on the drama, and tension between a mother and daughter who are profoundly different. The series represents a relationship much like the relationship between Faith Ringgold and her two daughters. The story follows a daughter named, Celia Cleopatra Price, a graduate of Howard University, who graduated first in her class. She is unable to identify with her mother, CeeCee. CeeCee had only finished the 8th grade and dropped out due to her pregnancy with Celia. After reviewing Jacob Lawrence’s direct and dramatic paintings, it was clear that his painting helped him express himself. The painting was and still is a product of the economic and cultural self-determination that African-American dealt in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, during the migration and still evident in society today. The visual qualities in Jacob Lawrence artwork that is appealing are the vibrant colors and his clever way of self-expressing the time he was so familiar. Two barrier breaking retrospective artists born with more than 2,899 miles between them have beat down the walls in the art world opening up endless opportunities for female artist today. Carrie Mae Weems and Lorna Simpson specialize in catching the viewer’s eye and penetrating their feelings towards issues of culture, politics, equality, and feminism. It is well established that these woman specialize in identifying problems in their artwork, both artists seem to struggle with not being able to avoid the ignorant eye of stereotyping because they use African American Models in their artwork. Art could be displayed in many different forms; through photography, zines, poetry, or even a scrapbook. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.

She manipulates the style of antebellum era silhouettes, intended to create simple, idealistic images, and instead creates commentaries on race, gender, and power within the specific history of the United States. She has also been accused of reconfirming the negative stereotypes of black people, especially black women, that the viewer and that the white, male dominated art world may hold. Georgia O’Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887. She was the second born to seven children. The women in her family had always pursued art. Her mother pushed painting on and her other sisters, just as her grandmother pushed her mother. O’Keeffe always believed her home was the “Normal, healthy part of America”. Wisconsin later became most of the inspiration for her paintings. In 1905 O’Keeffe flew the coop and attended the Art institute of Chicago. One year after she went to study at the Art Student League of New York. O’Keeffe always believed that her education was not enough for her.

Throughout World War II, hundreds of German organizations existed that opposed the Third Reich, one of which was The White Rose. A student led group, The White Rose published six leaflets that served to convince other Germans to defy the regime of Adolf Hitler. These students were persecuted and killed for their actions in Nazi Germany but are revered as heroes in modern Germany. I have always found myself interested in opposition groups, who had the courage to stand up when others would not.

Soon after returning home from the war Amory is introduced to Rosalind Connage: a woman of ivory roots, he quickly falls madly in love with her, she also is head over heals for the “theoretical genius”(179), everything about Amory encaptures her, except one minor detail. Money. Amory grows up wealthy, but after the death of both of his parents his inheritance is almost nothing. Rosalind has always lived a life of extravagance, unfortunately for Amory she has no desire to risk her lifestyle, not even for love. She goes on to say “The very qualities I love you for are the ones that will always make you a failure”(181). Rosalind enjoys the remarkable traits that Amory possesses, but they all fall second tier to the the only one that matters, Money.
