For my surgical outpatient procedure topic I chose to talk about Mole removal. Moles are an overgrowth of pigment cells. They may appear dark in color or the same color as the surrounding skin. In most cases moles will not threaten a person’s health. However sometimes it can transform overtime and lead to serious issues such as cancer. In this essay I will talk about different mole removal methods risking complication and preparations during and after the procedure. A few different ways to remove moles one is Excision with Cauterization and the other is Excision with or without stitches. Excision with Cauterization is burning away the mole then using an antibiotic to cover the area. This is a quick and painless procedure and a patient can shortly leave afterwards. Excision with or without stiches is where the physician will cut away and remove the mole. Depending on how deep the removal of the mole is there are stitches that will absorb into the skin and do not have to be removed, if a few surface stitches are required those will have to be taken out by the physician. Laser removal is another option but it is not the best choice because although laser excision has been tried for moles, it is not the best method of choice because for moles that are deep, it is hard to penetrate deep enough so there is …show more content…
Surgical mole removal is a simple process but can also be scary process as well depending on the outcome if the mole is cancerous. There is not much for a medical assistant to assist with when it comes to the procedure except for assisting the doctor with all of his needs and talking to the patient about wound care and calling to check how their doing. Although mole removals are a simple procedure every surgical comes with risks and should be taking into deep consideration because you never know what the outcome will
The methods doctors use to remove Molluscum Contagiosum bumps include: Scraping, Freezing (cryotherapy), and Laser therapy
Malignant melanoma is usually diagnosed by the doctor looking at a certain area in the skin that might raise concern. The doctor will then perform a skin biopsy which is known as removing all or a part of the skin area that is infected while under a local anesthesia and sending the specimen that was collected to a pathologist to be looked at. The skin biopsy report might show an atypical mole, a melanoma that might need surgery, and a benign condition that doctor wont need to treat. Some doctors might also use a technique called dermatoscopy which is when they cover a suspicious spot with oil and examine it with a brightly lit magnifying instrument.
Scalp micropigmentation is similar to microblading, because it mimics the look of natural hair by applying cosmetic tattoo pigments to the epidermis of the scalp. Areola pigmentation aims to restore the look of the areola and nipple area on the breast. It is typically performed on breast cancer survivors after a mastectomy, but it is also common for women with fading or irregular areolas to receive this procedure. The common denominator of these cosmetic tattooing procedures is that they all work to rebuild the individual’s confidence. Having the knowledge and training to provide a client with something that can help them love themselves a little more is what I find most fulfilling in this industry.
The first sign of melanoma is often a change in the size, shape, or color of an existing mole or the appearance of a new mole. Men most commonly develop melanoma on the trunk, particularly the back, and women on the legs or arms. Melanoma develops in a manner similar to other cancer types. A cell's DNA genes, which control cell division and reproduction, become damaged. The damaged genes cause the cell to divide and grow without control or order, eventually becoming a malignant tumor.
The first known use of dermatology was established in 1819 and only in the 1930’s did its practice become more widely accomplished, known and sought after. (“Dermatology” 2014) Since then it has extensively evolved and changed and been able to provide services for women and men around the world. Originally being a part of the medicine field can now be considered a division of the beauty industry due to availability of services and treatments for aesthetic, pampering purposes, rather than just originally founded for medical issues of resolving skin disorders and diseases. Dermatology being defined as ‘a branch of medicine dealing with the skin, its structure, functions and diseases’ (“Dermatology” 2014) now offers many professions one being a dermatologist, whic...
On the clinical side, medical assistants often are the people who take medical histories, prepare patients for examination, assist the doctor during appointments and perform basic laboratory tests, along with other clinical responsibilities.
As medical assistants we are trained in both clinical and administrative duties, which is a unique skill, and sets us apart from other healthcare professionals. Administrative duties include tasks such as answering telephones, greeting patients, appointment scheduling, and arranging hospital admissions and laboratory services. Clinical duties include responsibilities such as taking medical histories, educating patients on any medical procedures, drawing blood, collecting specimens, and assisting the physician during exams. Because of the growing demand and extensive training of medical assistants, there is never a problem finding work in hospitals, clinics, or private doctors’ offices. Most forms of skin cancer are found on areas of the body that experience constant exposure to sunlight. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight are one main cause of skin cancer, but artificial sources of UV rays have also been proven to be a contributing factor.
With non-melanoma cancers, you would question areas of the skin that are unusual. Any open sores which may crust over and the...
As a medical assistant you may work in a clinical or administrative environment. Clinical medical assistant’s duties may include taking vital signs of patients, conducting in-office screening tests, collecting and preparing specimens to send to diagnostic laboratories, recording medical histories, and administering medications. The work environment may be in a hospital or a physician office along a physician. Administrative medical assistant’s duties may include updating patient records, greeting patients, setting appointments, calling in prescriptions or refills as directed by the doctor, answering phones, and arranging for diagnostic testing or other procedures. Their work environment is usually in an office setting focusing on making sure the medical practice is running smooth. At the end of the day it is just more expensive to hire a, nurse and a secretary when you can somewhat have the best of both worlds with a medical assistant. With the demand for more health services medical assistants can assist doctors in a clinical and administrative manner to allow more patients to be seen.
The laser procedure is much faster than the surgical operations. Moreover, regular visits are also not required to derive benefit of the treatment.
An administrative assistant must be able to handle stress, multitask, and work well under pressure. There are multiple jobs that the administrative medical assistant is responsible for, such as, answering the phone, being able to use computer applications, triaging phone calls with the permission of the physician, scheduling appointments, filing patient charts, collecting money, filing insurance claims and medical coding. When answering a call, greeting a patient, or writing a letter they must do so in a professional matter. They must also have good communication skills and a good personality and be familiar with medical terminology and medical coding, and be able to help patients with their best of knowledge. Depending on the facility they work on, they may occasionally need to assistant in the back with taking vital signs, translation, if they are bilingual, or with patient education, as directed by the doctor. In other words, administrative medical assistants have many occupations while working in the front
Cosmetic surgery is becoming a trend world-wide today because humans can never be fully satisfied in terms of looks; however, this type of surgery has many serious perils rather than some benefits that we already know.
There are many Cons’ that are associated with cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Some procedures can leave a person scared for life physically or even mentally. For instance, “Liposuction is the removal of fat cells to produce smoother contours, if to much fat and fluid is removed at once the patient could go into shock, bleed internally, or worst of all die.” (Margie Parent 2002) After some cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries sometimes it is found very common for a person to have a hard time adjust...
