Paulo Coelho, a Brazilian novelist once said, “Culture makes people understand each other better. And if they understand each other better in their soul, it is easier to overcome the economic and political barriers. But first they have to understand that their neighbor is, in the end, just like them, with the same problems, the same questions.” Culture to me is customs, history, moral values, religion, political values, entertainment, and collective traditions of people who have the same history and past and share it. Being overjoyed of our original traditions, Mexican citizens have kept many of our ancestors’ traditions. For instance, being very close to your church, always having a little carnasada inviting family members and friends, and to listen to mariachi music. My culture strongly believes in the works of God and going to church every Sunday and I adore that about my culture since I am also close to God. Another part of my culture that I’d accept and loved is the love for food. The Mexican culture love to make extraordinary, spicy, and tasteful food, which many Americans have adopted because it is so good. Just like anything there is always something you won’t agree with and within my culture there is a big problem, in my opinion, with gender roles. Examples of the female role in the Mexican culture are no one can eat or be served food until the man of the house has been seated and been served his food, the woman is to stay at home taking care of the home and cooking, making sure the children are on the right path of the church, and the mans opinion has more authority than the woman’s opinion.
