Whether young adults and adolescents realize the fact or not, alcohol is ingrained into social media, and deeply. It is considered pretty normal for Americans to post a video on YouTube about someone doing silly or ridiculous acts while being drunk or to see your friend post a picture on Facebook advertising that they are drunk. In fact, thousands of videos of drunk people will come up if someone searches this on YouTube. In fact, in the book American Mashup, it is mentioned that an account on YouTube, in 2007 posted a video called “The Ultimate Drunk People Compilation Video Ever” (367). In brief, one way is that others will try to prove themselves that they are “cool” by posting about alcohol. Doing this on social media will evidently reach a larger audience, which means they have accomplished their goal, in their minds. Following this, drinking trends and games become widespread throughout social media and the internet. Instead of gaining popularity through word of mouth, social media has grown into a faster alternative. Lastly, important aspects of life have become ingrained into social media involving alcohol, such as jobs and the workforce. “80 percent of teen-agers have tried alcohol, and that alcohol was a contributing factor in the top three causes of death among teens: accidents, homicide and suicide” (Underage, CNN.com pg 3). Students may use drinking as a form of socializing, but is it really as good as it seems? The tradition of drinking has developed into a kind of “culture” fixed in every level of the college student environment. Customs handed down through generations of college drinkers reinforce students' expectation that alcohol is a necessary ingredient for social success. These perceptions of drinking are the going to ruin the lives of the students because it will lead to the development alcoholism. College students who drink a lot, while in a college environment, will damage themselves mentally, physically, and socially later in life, because alcohol adversely affects the brain, the liver, and the drinkers behavior.
According to Andrew Herman, “Each year, 14,000 die from drinking too much. 600,000 are victims of alcohol related physical assault and 17,000 are a result of drunken driving deaths, many being innocent bystanders” (470). These massive numbers bring about an important realization: alcohol is a huge issue in America today. Although the problem is evident in Americans of all ages, the biggest issue is present in young adults and teens. In fact, teens begin to feel the effects of alcohol twice as fast as adults and are more likely to participate in “binge-drinking” (Sullivan 473). The problem is evident, but the solution may be simple. Although opponents argue lowering the drinking age could make alcohol available to some teens not mature enough to handle it, lowering the drinking age actually teaches responsibility and safety in young adults, maintains consistency in age laws, and diminishes temptation.

Almost every television show that young people watch have some underage substance abuse, leading adolescents to believe that it can’t be that bad. While society plays a big part in this huge problem, both teens and parents need to learn that there can be severe consequences from as little as one drink. Allowing them to think this kind of behavior is acceptable will haunt them for the rest of their lives, even if they are not alcohol related. Believing that such behavior is acceptable now will lead them to bad decision-making skills in the future when faced with an ethical decision. As teenagers reach maturity and start developing their social activities to the point where weekend-and often weeknight-parties becomes the regular occurrence, they are often looking for a means to escape soberness. They would to love put their hair down and drink alcohol as they socialize and or dance with their friends, a leisure that they have seen older siblings, parents, friends, television and ultimately society do over and over again. Alcohol is a large part of American culture. All over the United States drinking is not only acceptable but a social norm from teenagers to adults. This is not only the case in the U.S., but all over the world, where some drinking ages are 18 and 19 years of age. In America specifically, alcohol has been around for centuries and is a large part of many social gatherings. Although this is the case now, in the early 1900’s during the prohibition period, all alcohol was banned and deemed illegal to possess. Even though illegal, the task was just too heavy and alcohol was too much a common practice for most Americans. As time went on the prohibition period ended and the laws were revoked, making it legal again to possess alcohol. Today, an average of 4,358 drinkers under the age of twenty-one are diagnosed with alcohol as a factor of their death. Mother Aleae Pennette never would have guessed that July 10, 2011 would be the day that her daughter would add on to that statistic. Fourteen year old Takeimi Rao was found dead that morning after mixing vodka and soda with her friends during a sleepover (Conley). Though extremely tragic, Takeimi was only one of 8.7 million minors and young adults (ages twelve to twenty) that reported having more than “just a few sips” of alcoholic beverages in the past month. Additionally, her age group is responsible for 11% of the alcohol consumed in The United States (“Underage Drinking”). Alcohol abuse is the most common problem, nowadays. In fact, majority of people drink alcohol repeatedly to the point where they have difficulty to stop. Statistics show that, as much as, “40% of college students report drinking five or more drinks in one episode” (Walters & Baer, 2006). Alcohol has become more popular over the years as advertisements, simultaneously with commercials of it, filled the media. It also is easily accessible and cheap in comparison to other psychoactive substances. On the other hand, alcohol safety awareness programs are barely noticeable. My research will present how alcohol and its abuse gets into people’s lives and how it influences their physical and mental health, as well as, social existence.
It is no secret that social media has become a part of our everyday lives. This is a society where you are judged by how many Instragram likes your photos can get or how many followers you have on Twitter. Not only have social media become a part of our lives, it has changed the way. Whether it be lack of conversation at the dinner table or voicing our opinion on Twitter, there is no denying that social media is here to stay. While my fellow Rider students and I may be spending too much checking social media sites, it most certainly keeps us in touch with the Rider community.

However, using it as a tool for learning is a different story. By using it as a tool, it can push you off your course with classes. Social media is something that is not needed at school grounds.
