We have reached a point in time where the antediluvian ways have either been completely forgotten or are simply ignored for loss of necessity. This fast progressing world owes everything to the researchers and innovators responsible for the ever changing paradigm of technology. My capability as an engineer, however, to be truly able to understand how the various design aspects behind each innovation, helping me ponder over the numerous ways in which it can be implemented for technological betterment is what makes me stand apart. Right from my childhood, I have been fascinated by bicycles, motorcycles, cars, mechanical structures and basically anything that had virile relations; this was mainly because of the automobiles and other vehicles in movies that always used to drum in a sense of amazement that used to reverberate in my memories long after. It was only a matter of time before I came to realize the sheer brilliance behind every design, the immense perfection engineers strive to achieve and the amount of hard work and dedication required to impeccable levels in the whole process. I wanted to be a part of it and it was then that I decided what was worth doing with my life. I chose Mechanical Engineering as my major in my Undergraduate study and frankly, the field never ceases to amaze me. Right through my school days, I had an acute sense of curiosity behind the true physics of how things worked the way they did. I loved doing Math and Physics was always my passion. I love sports and I spent a lot of time playing sports such as tennis, football, basketball and badminton during my school days. Only during my undergraduate study did I become more focused as the flame within me lit up, enlightening me. I have always been a math-science oriented person, and until my sophomore year of high school, my primary interest was in biological sciences. However, as a student in the Pre-International Baccalaureate Program, I was required to enroll in the physics I class. Walking into the physics lab, I saw an energetic, eccentric woman in a room covered with posters of the periodic table and Alberta Einstein alongside those of Elvis Presley. I would never view physics in the same light again.

Being a mechanical design engineer is not easy, however mechanical design engineering is one of the oldest and most respected engineering disciplines. As the global population nears 9 billion people in 2040 (1), we are not only challenged to provide for basic needs, but to also improve living standards worldwide. These challenges require a global energy increase of approximately 35% (1). The challenge may seem intimidating, but the human race has demonstrated an exceptional ability to overcome difficulties and progress. An important aspect to improve worldwide living standards involves the environment. The most important needs in many areas of the world are cleaner air and access to cleaner water. Nations need to continue to address risks associated with rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Protecting the environment and preventing these increases pose technological challenges for us today as well as the generations of the future. To overcome these challenges it is going to be necessary for many engineers of many disciplines to be involved. However the most significant problem we face is to produce this energy in a sustainable manner. Achieving this sustainability is a matter of using processes that are less wasteful, developing technologies that are more efficient, and finding cleaner energy sources. My motivation for pursuing the MSc in Mechanical Engineering with a track of Sustainable Energy and Process Technology (SPET) is that I believe that this program will give me the skills, education, networks, and contact with industry necessary to be able to make a difference in the world’s constant search for increasingly sustainable energy sources. I am applying for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Solid Mechanics to expand on my study of and experience with materials. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Materials Science and Engineering as an undergraduate at UCLA. I now look forward to moving into graduate study in a field of engineering with a related, but different perspective. I have always wondered how the world works and who thinks of ways to do something easier. Mechanical engineering is a hands-on field of designing to installing. What interested me the most was all the opportunities that can come from engineering. I searched the Occupational Outlook Handbook and conducted a personal interview with Richard Schmidt. While conducting this research; I discovered mechanical engineer is perfect for me because of the job duties, work environment, pay, and education.

Due to a lack of interesting mechatronics display items in many engineering companies and hobbyists shops, we found an existing design that matched all these requirements: A mechanical time writing clock (a.k.a. “Plotclock”). Our group decided to figure out exactly how it worked, by replicating a rescaled version of it and re-programming its movement to achieve this. We succeeded in having near perfect numbers drawn by the clock, although some improvements can be made on its dimensions to make it more stable while operating.
We live in a continually changing world; however, my passion of engineering broke that fact. I can always remember when I was a kid how much I was obsessed with how the stuff around me functioned. When I was six years old, I disassembled my father mechanical alarm clock to see how it works; I still remember the glaze in my eyes while watching the gears inside the clock moving in a specific way to make this beautifully elegant yet simple invention. Since that day I became more obsessed with how the mechanics behind objects around me worked. During the summer of grade five, I became more enthusiastic about exploring mechanics. Born in a family of mechanical engineers, I always had a predilection towards mechanical engineering. My goal is to design the futuristic self driven and hybrid cars in a way that augments their celerity and enhances user experience manifolds.
