Engineering is a broad major, sectioned into several fields of study. The fields of engineering included Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Petroleum, etc. Although all branches of engineering require the same prerequisites, the program of study is further personalized subsequent to the first two semesters completed. Alongside the recommended program of study, an engineer major must possess a strong work ethic in order to keep up with the demanding courses. It also essential for students to immerse themselves in engineering community outside of the classrooms if they desire to succeed within the major. As an engineer major “There is no doubt you’re going to struggle. It’s going to be hard” states Jacobs (Jacobs, Jeannie). If a student wishes to succeed in engineering, they must take advantage of the resources provided on campus. Derailment is not an option for someone determined enough to pursue engineering. According to Jacobs, “The one’s who follow through with engineering are the ‘C’ students who never gave up. They are the one’s who worked for it.” Engineer students must prioritize what is most important to them if they truly desire to succeed. Through engaging in activities external to the classroom, students are given the opportunity to experience the engineering discourse community. In order for students to coherent members of their desired field, they must first “learn to use the common language of engineers (Winsor 8).” If a student acquires the academic knowledge needed for engineering, however is deficient in the language of engineering, their “saying-doing-being-valuing-believing combination” is inconsistent (Gee 28). According to James Paul Gee the mastery of a Discourse occurs through “enculturation into social practices… and supported interaction with people who have already mastered the Discourse (29).” Thus proving that if a student merely attends class without participating in real life applications of engineering, they know how to engineer however they cannot be engineers. Students will learn that “the majority of what they learn in class is unimportant until they apply it outside [of the classroom] (Akpabio, Ini).” Since “discourse communities share assumptions about what objects are appropriate for examination and discussion” participating in clubs will allow students to develop first-hand experience with projects currently being worked on by engineers (Porter 82). Attendance at a technical college or local 2-year school was deplorably referenced to as “loser’s territory” and if you dared to enroll in one anyway and followed through to graduation, well you were congratulated but to a lackluster fanfare. Some community college graduates still receive this reception upon exit of a community college but attitudes are definitely changing. Today more than ever, degree-seeking individuals are paving the path to their careers through the entrance and exit doors of community colleges. These well-informed leaders of the new school have realized a smarter way to education; that a bachelor’s degree or taking a traditional route to obtain one is not necessarily the best or right way to be a successful and employable member of society.

These people will more than likely be ecstatic about getting into industrial machinery mechanics. They need to be able to put in one hundred ten percent of their effort into becoming an industrial machinery mechanic. An industrial machinery mechanic’s overall objective on the job is to stop a mechanical error before it happens. An industrial machinery mechanics are often caught repairing, maintaining, and fabricating machinery. They will be required to have certain education and training as well as some on the job training or complete an apprenticeship program. They will receive many benefits for working in this particular field.
When Christian students graduate from high school and begin their journey into college, a distinction is often made between those going into full-time ministry and those working towards a secular career. Although it is uncommon for students pursuing a secular career to be criticized for their decision, those pursuing pastoral work or foreign missions are sometimes viewed as working towards a “higher calling” from God. They have surrendered their entire career over to the Lord. The profession of engineering is, by definition, a secular career field. However, a Christian engineer is able to serve and worship God through his or her career in a unique way. A Christian worldview both validates and adds depth to the engineering profession.

In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems. It opens up a world of opportunity to create innovative technology that influences many aspects of people’s lives, this giving an individual the power to make a difference. While I am deeply interested in the subjects that are the foundation of engineering, in addition I have many other personal reasons for pursuing civil engineering in specific.
