2.2 Labour Productivity
Since the construction labours are the most dynamic element in the construction industry improving labour efficiency has become a target for construction companies. One of the most efficient ways to increase labour efficiency is that of improving their productivity. Hence, by increasing labour productivity, less number of workers can achieve same production rate, which leads to lower cost and enhances the company's chance to win new contracts.
2.2.1 What is Labour Productivity?
Back in 1980s , no standardized productivity definition was established in construction industry. It is difficult to define a standard productivity measure because companies use their internal systems which are not standardised. Productivity can be illustrated as an association between output and an input.
Productivity = Output/Input
Or
Productivity = Input/output
Productivity measures can be placed into two categories (Attar, Gupta & Desai, 2012)
1. Single factor or partial productivity measures relate a particular measure of output to a single measure of input, such as labour or capital. Labour productivity that considers only labour as an input is commonly used in the construction industry.
2. Multi-factor or total productivity measures (MFP) relate a particular measure of output to a group of inputs, or total inputs used.

In order to eliminate or reduce the material waste or non-value adding activities and improve the quality of construction works, a quantitative study approach will be adopted. The application of DMAIC methodology will be adopted to justify the research work. DMAIC acts as a road map to the project managers to identify and understand the various root causes and their effects. Therefore, providing necessary improvements and control measures. Thus the combination of Lean Six Sigma leads to the projects of superior quality at the right
Metrics are very important in Operations Management within an organization because it provides functions such as control, reporting, communication, opportunities for improvement and expectations. How would you feel if your boss cut down your work paycheck just because he wanted a better life for them self? The men, women and children that worked in factories during the 18th and 19th centuries were brutally mistreated causing poverty, injuries and pallid body types (Thompson). At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, working was incredibly unsafe because there were absolutely no labor or safety laws. Working conditions back then were extremely different from those that are in place today. The unbearable working conditions caused a vast amount of labor laws and rights.
Do you ever stop and think about what the world has come to? How power and technology have developed our reality into a slightly oppressed dystopia? The enduring relevance of dystopian literature is explored in the fictional novel ‘ relentlessly violent’ by Ray Bradbury (Bradbury, 1976/2008) and the dystopian film series ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ (Miller & Morano, 2017) episodes 1,2 & 3. It dives into the theme of oppression through the use of power and technology as well as exploitation, which appears frequently throughout these texts and links back to how it is relevant in our world today. The use of technology and even power has significantly impacted our society today, which is why these dystopian texts that show the effects of oppression,
When reading the book The Goal written by Eliyahu Goldratt, there were many lessons that I learned in order to have a clear and concise understanding of a positive level of productivity in a company. Understanding what it actually means to be productive and how to increase the level of productivity by knowing the actual goal of the company that is trying to be reached and the components that go into the process of being productive. There are many factors that contribute to the level of productivity and being able to identify these factors is the key ingredient to having a successful level of productivity.
Nevertheless, there remains a debate over the differences between productivity and performance, and how they are measured. Performance is comprised of seven dimensions, of which one is productivity, as well as effectiveness, efficiency, quality, profitability, quality of work, and innovation (Haynes, 2007). ...ing low cost but reliable alternatives to expensive technology and building a culture for continuous improvement. Secondly, developing a culture that promotes high level of respect and morale, which eventually leads to a healthy work environment. When the work environment is cordial and friendly, all the different stakeholders will also interact with each other and work in a way that is best for the construction industry. Finally, most of the project delivery process should be transformed into Integrated Project Delivery processes so that they involve all the different stakeholders at vital phases of the project. Understanding these is essential to understanding the two production functions which this WIKI article focuses on. (2)
The pressure can come from the need to make minimum wage money or a parent deciding on what their kids need to fulfill financially. When choosing something partaking interest in, they are content and adore what they do. Love for their work profession encourages a positive attitude and this is needed for productivity. When an employee loves what they do, they attain a constructive behavior. But, when productivity is sacrificed, it begins to suffer with negative employees who only work to make a piece of change. The only determination they pertain to is to increase their productivity in order to get more money, but in due time this makes them traumatic and hostile.
