Kilauea is between 300,000 to 600,000 years old. The volcano got its name from a hawaiian word that means much spreading or spewing. Kilauea sits on a curved line made up of other volcanoes such as Kohala and Mauna Kea. Geologists found a pancake shaped layer of hot rock in the crust about 403 miles beneath the surface, this provides a heat source for Kilauea. Kilauea has a large summit caldera with a central crater, according to hawaiian legends it’s the home of the fire and volcano goddess Pele. Kilauea built itself up from the seafloor over time, and much of its bulk is underwater. It’s lava flows ranging from 300,000 to 600,000 cubic meters each day. Lava younger than 1,000 years covers 90 percent of the volcano. In 1990 lava flooded Kalapana, and more than 100 homes were destroyed. The most famous eruption was in 1959, the lava was 3 times higher than the Washington Monument.

Mauna Loa is located on a hot spot in the Pacific Ocean. It is not near a plate boundary, in fact it is 3,200 km from the nearest plate boundary, and is situated in the middle of the Pacific tectonic plate. This is actually a rarity, as 90% of volcanoes are along a tectonic plate boundary. A hot spot occurs where long, stationary vertical pools of magma rise up and towards the plate. Movement of the tectonic plates above the hot spot created Mauna Loa, along with the other Hawaiian volcanoes. The older Hawaiian Islands were once above this stationary hot spot, but have been carried northwest by the slowly moving Pacific plate. As the plate moves, it carries the previously formed, older, volcanoes with it, creating a trail of younger, new volcanoes behind. The islands are lined up along the Hawaiian Ridge-Emperor Seamounts chain, which is 3,750 miles and includes Kauai, Maui, Oahu and Hawai’i, from north to south, respectively. There are around 80 volcanoes in this chain; most of them underwater, consequently the term seamount refer to submarine volcanoes. Three volcanoes of Hawai’i, Mauna Loa, Kilauea and Loihi seamount, are all currently sharing the Hawaiian hot spot. Although, recent evidence has shown that all three volcanoes use have separate plumbing systems to expel the lava from the pool of magma deep below them. It has also been suggested that Loihi is slowly moving Mauna Loa from the center of the island, thus shifting directly over the hot spot. The closer to the hot spot a volcano is, the more active it will be. The Hawaiian hot spot has laid down layers of lava, building up enormous islands from the ocean floor.

Pele (also called Ka wahine `ai honua, the woman who devours the land) is the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. She is very popular in Hawaiian mythology and is believed to live in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, a fire pit at the summit of Kīlauea (an active volcano). There are a few variations of how Pele actually came to the Hawaiia islands. One was through expulsion, and the other by canoe. In the canoe/flood version, Pele received a canoe from her oldest brother, Kamohoali'i, the king of sharks and travelled far away with her brothers and came across Hawaii. Upon arrival, she is attacked by her older sister, Na-maka-o-Kaha’i. Pele survived, recovered, and fled to Oahu. There, she dug a numerous amount of “fire pits,” which include the DIamond Head crater in Honolulu. After, she travelled farther southeast to Maui, and created the Haleakala volcano. I chose to write my essay on these two cultures, because they are both native to their land, and they were both overthrown, for lack of a better word, from their homeland by more “Civilized” people. They were both thriving, self sufficient cultures that were living and progressing fine on their own. But others saw them as primitive and wanted to change them.
