As one of the students in a science major in school, I was told that being a doctor, optometrist, dentist, or a pharmacist would be a good career. Those professions would definitely bring “success” in life because they are considered the main components in medical field. You only should be proud by being one of them. I always wanted to be a member in the medical field, but I was not sure which path to go. After I graduated with my bachelor degree, I explored my options by interning in Saint Francis Medical Center. During internship, I attended to several departments include oncology, skilled nurses facility, nursery, and NICU (neonatal intensive-care unit). Attending different observational rotations outline my short-term and long-term goals. My short-term goal is to get accepted in Samuel Merritt University to study Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). In the program, I am able to learn nursing skills that qualify me to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination and Family Nurse Practitioner Board Certification Examination. As a FNP, I will be able to work in any medical setting in a very broad spectrum of departments, but my primary goal is to become part of women’s health department. One reason is breast cancer causes around 2 millions of women to die every year in United States. Many of the women did not realize until it causes severe pain, but it is too late to have any treatment toward it. STD is very prevalent in America population and definitely includes Chinese communities. Traditional Chinese families are inhibited talking about sex and women’s health because they are considered interdictions. As a Chinese, I had never learned how girls should protect themselves or they should have regular routine checkups to prevent diseases. They have sexuality as part of their lives, but they don’t know what to do or how to deal with infection. STD is treatable in early stage but causes infertility and many other health problems if untreated.
