Every family is made up of individuals with their own beliefs and opinions. These beliefs, shared by the parents, are usually passed down to their children, thus molding other individuals who share some of those same views. These views can also be called norms, and these norms come about through culture. Norms refer to nonconcrete rules widely known by a group that affect their behavior. Each family shares their specific culture; therefore, each family follows their own norms characteristic of their culture. Norms come in many forms, and mine are no exception. My family consists of three individuals—my mother, my brother, and myself. My mother’s name is Michele Hill. My parents have been divorced since I was three years old, and my mother has always been the leader of our family. For the longest time, she filled the space of what a father was supposed to do, such as cutting the grass, putting the bread on the table, etc. Additionally, I was raised on Christian principles, such as going to church every Wednesday night and Sunday morning, not cursing, etc. My mother also has been the example regarding faith and hard work. “I work for the Lord,” she says, meaning she performs the best she can every day. This practice of dedicating all work to God is another Christian norm placed on me. First off, I will strive to present information in exciting and different ways. I will teach verbally, visually, and hands-on. This way of teaching increases the possibility of drawing all students’ attention, because each student has their preferred way of learning. Sexual violence is sometimes thought of as a natural part of life. That men have an inherit biological trait that predisposes them to violence and that it cannot be helped. The famous quote is “boys will be boys” meaning that men have no control over their actions and that if they sexual assault someone, that it is just human nature. This is in fact false. There is nothing in the biological makeup of males that can explain away sexual violence. It is a learned cultural behavior generated by gender norms and the medias perpetuation of sexual violence.
Lets start by understanding that cultures are a melting pot of people’s beliefs, language, behaviors, values, material objects, and norms. Norms are written and non-written “expectations of behavior” that govern a certain location, place, or culture (26). These norms also vary from culture to culture meaning what is a norm in the U.S may not be a norm in India. For example, a norm in America would be tipping a waiter after a meal. Another would be acknowledging someone as you walk past him or her, typically done at work or in a public place. In all, norms are folkways, mores, taboos, and written laws that are an established standard of one’s behavior.
How can a simple six letter word be so complicated to define? Family is a single word that is open to many interpretations depending on the individual. If you try to condense this ideal to a single clinical definition you end up excluding numerous members of society. What comes to mind when you think of the word family? While in the most broken down and literal sense, family means a relative with a blood or legal bond, the word family can encompass blood relations, adoptions, and even intentional relationships such as friendships. There are many causes and reasons on why we are prone or more likely to help certain groups of people compared to another when they are in trouble and in need of our help. One of the reasons that might influence one’s helping behavior is social norm. Social norm of helping can tell us why or when we should help other people when they need our help. Social norm is a putative behavior that an individual is expected to do and obeys to in any particular groups or community that can also be a basis for any acceptable and good behaviors. In other words, social norm can help people to decide on what they should do in any uncertain situations. Norms can also influence someone’s behavior and reasons on why they do what they do.

But, what makes a family? Each year, as a new group of students enter my classroom, I will encourage them to be expressive of their imaginations in their favorite subjects, whether it will be art, literature, math or music. We all have rules and regulations to follow, and each student will know that there is no exception in the school or the classroom. Another goal in my classroom will be to keep the students excited about learning, not to treat school as a game or a social event, but to encourage a unique and fun atmosphere to learn.
In order for society to meet the basic social needs of its members, social institutions, which are not buildings, or an organization or even people, but a system whose of social norms, mores and folkways that help make people feel important. Social institutions, according to our textbook, is defined as a fundamental component of this organization in which individuals, occupying defined statues, are “regulated by social norms, public opinion, law and religion” (Amato 2004, p.961). Social institutions are meant to meet people’s basic needs and enable the society to survive. Because social institutions prescribe socially accepted beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors, they exert considerable social control over individuals.
The unit of a family is the most prominent essential for all of us. As social human beings, we seek social support in order to thrive, and that is where family comes into play. A family is where you receive love, support, encouragement, and many other social benefits. The total number of households in the United States increased from 63 million in 1970 to 113 million in 2008 (Weeks, 2012). The family has influenced multitudes of people in many ways. The traditional family in the United States consists two-married individuals providing care and stability for their biological offspring also know as the nuclear family. Family is the important base to the entire of human in their life. There are several principles of moral and ethics that should be applied in family. Firstly, it’s all about love among the family members. Love is an emotion that felt by an individual which is unconditionally given by one individual to another individual. Secondly, giving and receiving among the family members. Giving and receiving make the love flows highly in family whereas giving is an ethics that should been applied among family members. Giving something without expect anything shows the unselfishness of love. Third principle is thoughts, words and deeds. Thoughts, words and deeds should consider carefully because it has its own consequences. The action must be ethical because it could hurt other family members if it’s unethical which could destroy the relationship among each of the family members. Another principle is present reality and future potential. Every of the family members work should be in progress because it’s important to them to help their family members to be safe and supportive.
For my research topic I chose to write on the effects of expectation. The expectations of one’s family and one’s self can have a major influence on his/ her life. When some tries to live up to a high expectation it can cause the individual a great deal of stress. Therefore, the question the question I am researching is “Should family members- parents, grandparent, aunts or uncles- set high educational, relational, and moral expectations for their children?” In order to find information on this topic I acquired two articles from the University of South Carolina Library website. An extremely common theme from my interviews was the tension felt from family and peers. From very early on children are taught what is expected from them as either a male or female. Now at first, this might seem like a simple concept of just how someone raises their children, but there is more to it than that. Britney, during my interview with her, said how she felt that “gender expectations are just stereotypes.” This is a great example of gender stereotyping through socialization. Tension is caused by my interviewees’ differing views from the people they have tension with whether it is family or friends. Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
This assignment was quite interesting as I had a chance to sit down and actually talk with my parents about their specific views and attitudes on several topics. The values that I believe in play a very important role in my life. These important values have been greatly influences by my family. Our parents are the ones who first instilled values into us. As I grew up, where we loving our friends and life experiences helped us refine our own values.
