Special education is a large part of the education system, which includes the mentally retarded, people with learning disabilities, the emotionally disturbed, hearing impaired, visually impaired, etc. Many people fail to include this system as one that can possibly involve discrimination, but those enrolled in special education has increased among all racial classifications. Between 1980 and 1990, the entire population enlisted in special education has increased. European American increased by 6%, African Americans increased by 13%, Hispanic Americans increased by 53%, and Asian Americans/Pacific Americans increased by 107.8% (Ford, Obiakor, p. 8). Special education is ever changing, making it important for teachers to change with it. With the current paradigm shift to a family-centered relationship in mind, individual teachers must look at their ethical statements (Amatea, 2013). These statements must focus on areas with role obligations, such as, practitioner, colleague, leadership, community resource, advocate, and representative of the field of special education. Public Law 94-142: The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, now called Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), requires states to provide free, appropriate public education (FAPE) for every child regardless of disability. This federal law was the first to clearly define the rights of disabled children to receive special education services if their disability affects their educational performance. A parent of a special education student also has basic rights under IDEA including the right to have their child evaluated by the school district and to be included when the school district meets about the child or makes decisions about his or her education. If a child is identified as in need of special education services, the school district must devise a written individual education program (IEP) for the child, which includes related services. An IEP is a statement of a student’s special education and related services including speech services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, counseling and assistive technology and transportation. In addition, this legally binding, individualized plan outlines reasonable educational goals for the student and is reviewed and updated yearly.
Learning disorders are lifelong conditions that can affect much of a person’s life, including daily routines, family relationships, education, and even friendship. Others experience learning disabilities that cause difficulties in all areas, eventually causing acts of discrimination. My personal philosophy of special education drives not from teaching in the field, but from, observations, and personal experience, and the workshops I attended. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals with special needs in many different settings, all this help cultivate my knowledge in handling the needs of the special needed student. Special needs students have the ability to learn, to function, to grow, and most importantly to succeed. The difference comes into how they learn or how they need to be taught. There are as many beliefs about the "hows" as there are teachers and each of us forms our own philosophy through our experiences and research. As a student in a special education teachers’ program, learners with special needs includes all students in special education programs in the public school system or other appropriate settings. However, the students I would like to focus on in my career are students with learning disabilities and therefore when thinking about learners with special needs, my mind focuses on this population.
There are very few students within the eighth grade at Summit International Preparatory Middle School receiving special education services. This case study focuses on a student that has been particularly difficult to get to know in my time at Summit, he is quiet, keeps to himself, and rarely offers up answers or information without being asked. I have been a Special Education Para-Educator for eleven years now. My decision to do this was based on the needs of my family and kids. When my last child was born, the doctors did not think that he would make it. He had a heart malfunction and was born with RSV and Von Villibrantds disease (which I did not find out until he was three); those factors lead me to want to work with special education kids, knowing that I could make a difference.
Special Education teachers are always looking for the latest best practice teaching information to help their students with learning disabilities succeed in school. Over the years new laws and mandates have been put into place to ensure that these students are ensured the proper education that students without disabilities receive. In the past students with learning disabilities have been excluded from the general education classroom or been thought that they just cannot learn. With the use of best practice procedures designed for special education students, these students can be successful in the classroom.
In this article, Patrick Wall (2014) cited how teachers effortlessly tried to discipline Joseph—but it failed. However, this sparks a rather differences between the general educator to special educators. According to Anne M. Hocutt, she conducted some findings revealing the contrast between the two positions: General educators are far more concerns on whether or not they are capable of being discipline—education is often secondary. This lead to the stereotype among teachers that students with disabilities have “irrational behaviors” (1996). However, special educators on the other hand, are more patient, promote one-to-one instructions and have a better understanding with the students. Teachers have lower tolerance of special education students compare to students in general education (Hocutt 1996). Special educators are more likely to praise students, ignored any disruptive behaviors, provide more answers about themselves and the students (Hocutt 1996). There are several academic, social, and behavioral problems which I observed in my class. The principle challenge I observed with the special education students was their inability to attend to a task independently. There are a variety of reasons for this, including, but not limited to, diagnosed ADHD for reading limitation, not having the confidence to pursue and persist, and not having a developed strategy to understand how begin and attend to work. Special education is the practice of educating students with disabilities in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs . It is an important aspect of the education system as it gives children with special needs an opportunity to learn the best they can at their own pace and makes sure that all the needs of these children are met, but is it really beneficial for the child to be isolated in these classrooms . Writing this final essay for this course one is able to reflection on the knowledge one has gained since the beginning of the course. This course has been affective and the benefits are using the information immediately to correct mistakes and grow in the profession. As a special educator one is more prepared and ready to provide a first rate education. Educators, staff, parents, and students all have a right to be familiar with a school’s code of conduct. Students retain information differently, some can learn and understand expectations by observation and many others have to learn by personal experience. Special education is an incredibly important, but often underappreciated aspect of education. There is a stigma around individuals with disabilities, that leads people to assume those in special education are less capable or smart as their peers in in a strictly traditional classroom setting. That could not be farther from the truth though, and the individuals in special education are just as capable of learning and maturing in to successful adults. As a future teacher, I was not really aware of how little I knew about special education until I enrolled in this course. This course has helped change and shape my views of special education, and helped me gain a better understanding of what exceptional children are and how I can better serve them
