Chinese labor camps were created in the 1950s by the Kuomintang as a way to get free labor out of Chinese civilians. When civilians were sent to prison, some would stay in prison and others would go to the labor camps. Prisoners were sent to the labor camps as a way to become reformed through a system they called, “re-education through labor.” In the 1950s, prisoners were sent to Chinese labor camps in order to get a “re-education through labor” and hopefully, come out of the system as better and more productive members of society; but after learning about the Laogai system more in depth, they have not become better and more productive members of society. There were approximately 350 Chinese labor camps . The Kuomintang would sentence Chinese civilians who had committed minor offenses and could be reformed to become a better person for the society. The camps that the prisoners had to live in were very unsanitary. Diseases spread like wildfire and their diets were horrendous. Although no one had spoken up and tried to stop the labor camps, the Laogai system violated The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
Beginning in the 1950’s, the Communist Party of China, led by Mao Zedong set up a system called a Lagoai system which means is a “re-education through labor,” which are also referred to as Chinese labor camps. Their system was a way to reform a prisoner to become a better and more productive member of society and to get labor done with little pay to none at all. The labor camps clearly violated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, by going against people’s human rights and sending them to labor camps without any trials. With as many mental illnesses that are out there due to serious cases like labor camps, the Laogai system did not help the prisoners into being reformed to “normal”. If anything all the labor camps did were scar the prisoners forever. Civilians of the Chinese labor camps were deprived of their freedom and were terrified for their lives after leaving the labor camps. Therefore, prisoners did not come out of the Laogai system better and more productive members of society.
In 1942, groups of people were taken from all of the camps and sent to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway. In 1864 the Geneva Convention was formed internationally. The Convention laid down rules concerning the treatment and protection of prisoners during wartime. The Japanese did not follow this Convention as they continuously mistreated many prisoners, including Australian troops/soldiers and civilian prisoners. The Japanese saw the prisoners in camps as people who surrendered, therefore they were considered weak and cowardly because of a belief that the Japanese held that soldiers should die out respect for their emperor and country, known as the Bushido Code.
Communism came to power in China in the year 1949 and was dictated by Mao Zedong, who later ordered for all educated men and women of China to be reeducated in the countryside. The Soviet system of forced labor camps was first established in 1919 under the Cheka; however, in the early 1930’s camps had reached outrageous numbers. In 1934 the Gulag had several million prisoners. The prisoners ranged from innocent pro-Bolsheviks to guilty Trotsky’s. Conditions were harsh, filthy, and prisoners received inadequate food rations and poor clothing. Over the period of the Stalin dictatorship many people experienced violations of their basic human rights, three in particular were Natasha Petrovskaya, Mikhail Belov, and Olga Andreyeva.
What were the Japanese internment camps some might ask. The camps were caused by the attack of Pearl Harbor in 1942 by Japan. President Roosevelt signed a form to send all the Japanese into internment camps.(1) All the Japanese living along the coast were moved to other states like California, Idaho, Utah, Arkansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona. The camps were located away from Japan and isolated so if a spy tried to communicate, word wouldn't get out. The camps were unfair to the Japanese but the US were trying to be cautious. Many even more than 66% or 2/3 of the Japanese-Americans sent to the internment camps in April of 1942 were born in the United States and many had never been to Japan. Their only crime was that they had Japanese ancestors and they were suspected of being spies to their homeland of Japan. Japanese-American World War I veterans that served for the United States were also sent to the internment camps.(2)
Japanese Internment Camps Ten weeks after the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) singed an Executive Order of 9066 that authorized the removal of any people from military areas “as deemed necessary or desirable”(FDR). The concentration and internment camps were essentially the same thing because, they put a economic burden on them, then they were forced to do unreasonable task, and finally they were both suppressed by the government.

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese Empire had declared war on the United States by planning and carrying out a devastating surprise attack on Pearl Harbor killing 2388 people and wounding 1178. (I) This horrible act provoked the U.S. to take part in WWII and because of the threat of espionage by Japanese Americans on February 19th, 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. This order authorized military commanders to designate areas for internment camps where people of Japanese ancestry who might pose a danger would be held. “…The Roosevelt administration was pressured to remove persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast by farmers seeking to eliminate Japanese competition, a public fearing sabotage, politicians hoping to gain by standing against an unpopular group, and military authorities.” (II) Congress supported the Executive Order by authorizing a prison term for those who do not obey.
England was a society dominated by children. During the reign of Queen Victoria one out of three of her servants were under the age of fifteen. Child labor was a prominent issue, because there were no systems to ensure the safety of children. During the start of the industrial revolution, there was a “high demand” for labor (Robson 53). Many families moved from rural areas to new, industrialized cities. After a while things weren’t looking as “promising” as they did before (Boone 23). In order to maintain, families had to put almost all of their family members to work. This led to a rise in the number of child labor. Children were “mistreated, underpayed and overworked” (Kincaid 30). Using children to do all of the hard work, the mining companies believed, was the most sensible and efficient way to get the job done. Because the children were a lot smaller, it was easy for them to “maneuver through tight spaces” and on top of that the children demanded little or no pay at all(Boone 43 ). These wages were enough to persuade companies to use children for all sorts of dangerous jobs such as coal mining and chimney sweeps. Children were called to do many other “horrible” jobs, jobs that adults in this era could not bear, just so long as the bills were paid (Robson 18). The working conditions and treatment of young children during this era was horrible and a lot was done to put an end to it.
Child labor is the employment of children, but not all work done by children should be classified as child labor that should be eliminated. Children’s participation in work that does not affect their health and personal development or interfere with their schooling is generally regarded as being something positive. The term “child labor” is defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful.
But in world war two, they weren’t the only country with camps worst than death. In even today’s world, human trafficking is a problem, women and men taken from their homes and some sold to satisfy people 's “needs”. During world war two, a woman slave or ‘comfort women’ were made to perform anything the Japanese soldiers wanted. These women were very rarely women in their 20s or older, usually these girls were as young as 13 years old and as old as 15 years old. These women could be forced into rape up to 20 or more times a day with many different men. Interviewed, Prescilla Bartonico tells her story that at the age of 17 he cousin was raped by the army in front of her then killed. They then did the same to her but kept her alive and made her family watch. She was then taken and imprisoned, forced to work, and obey any order given. At the age of only 15, Rosa Maria Henson suffered the same fate, she was abducted and imprisoned for 9 months. Many more women came forward after Henson shared her story. It was later found out that “An estimated 400,000 women and girls across Asia were abducted and forced to serve in so-called “comfort stations” by the Japanese military during World War II. A majority of these victims were taken hostage in South Korea and China, but women were captured in virtually every territory occupied by the Japanese”(Mosbergen). According to Shelley Lee’s novel “A New History of Asian America”, she sates how Vietnamese citizens, especially former elected officials, military officers, police, religious leaders, teachers, and anyone else who opposed the Communist government were forcefully shipped to camps for hard labor. Vietnamese citizens against the regime were stripped of their basic human liberties and taken away from their families and friends. Refugees tried escaping Vietnam, but there were too many civilians fleeing that it was impossible for everyone to leave at once. In the film “The Great Dictator”, Charlie Chaplin predicted many things that were totally different from how the actual events had occurred. Often there are scenes or clips in films that get misinterpreted but not as bad as they did in Charlie Chaplin’s film “The great Dictator”. One thing that Charlie Chaplin had the wrong ideal of was the way the Nazi concentration camps were ran and set up. When Chaplin made this film he basically made a rip off assumption of the concentration camps. Nothing that was shown was accurate about the setup and way of living inside of the concentration camps. The term concentration camp refers to a camp in which people are detained or confined, usually under harsh conditions and without regard to legal norms of arrest and imprisonment that’s acceptable in a constitutional democracy.
