Carpentry is the skilled trade of cutting, shaping and installation of building materials. Carpentry first began in the early 12th and 13th century. The styles of carpentry have changed from all over the globe at different times. Each country or culture had their own types of carpentry in the 12th and 13th centuries. This requires a knowledge of general woodworking. Carpentry consists of measuring, estimating and many more math skills. Carpenters learn their work mostly on the job and through training programs. Many carpenters learn their skills in school. High school courses in carpentry, shop, drawing, and math will help on the job. A hand tool is simply a tool used by the hand and requires no electricity to use the tool. A list of hand tools in a carpentry workshop would consist of knives, hand saws, back saws, planes, scrapers, chisels and gouges, basic drills, hammers and mallets, screwdrivers, clamps, and tape measurers. Tape measurers are a huge part of carpentry because everything needs to be cut or drilled at a precise point, and if the measurements are off the whole project could be ruined. A power tool is a tool powered by gasoline or electricity. Drills, jigsaws, circular saws, sanders, power planes, and biscuit jointers are power tools. Power tools require more skill and experience to use. You need to be very cautious using tools, and safety could be a huge issue if tools are not used properly. There are many steps that people need to take to become a carpenter. From building skyscrapers to working on bridges to working in kitchens.the largest work of trade are carpenters. Applicants for this program must be at least 17 years old and pass an exam to see if they have the skills to become a carpenter. The length of the program is usually thirty-six to forty-eight weeks. On the job apprentices learn technique and operation of carpentry from experienced carpenters on a less funded basis.
