Does the walker choose the path or the path the walker? Believe it or not, sometimes it’s the latter. People often ask me why I chose public service the State Department; I tell them, it just happened. Growing up I mapped out a career path in early childhood education and had a passion for developing the next generation. After finishing high school, I took classes and researched opening my own daycare and at age 19; I had a successful licensed daycare with one employee and eight students. This was the path I chose, my career, what I was meant to do because I excelled at it.

After two years, issues arose forcing me to sell my house and close my home business. I was crushed and the experience made me question whether the path I chose was the right one. I moved on and was hired as a shift supervisor in one of the largest pharmacies on the North Shore. I decided to combine my passion of business management with computers and take computer systems management courses. When I graduated, the field in computers was in turmoil and a lot of companies were closing. In order to pay my student loans, I signed up with a temporary employment company and was assigned to the National Passport Center (NPC).

This is where the path chose me in life; I enjoyed working in passports and at NPC. I knew this is where I wanted to work and found the job of a passport specialist interesting and rewarding. I inquired about how to get that job and was told how difficult the process would be. Sadly the slow season in passports began and my position as a temporary employee ended, getting me re-assigned to the National Visa Center.
