Baraka Paper The movie showed a group of young boys struggling to live at a rough environment. Each individual has the desire to avoid following the lifestyle of the gangs that were in their neighborhood. The attitude of most of the boys are clearly influenced by their social contexts. Two of the boys in the movie lives with a mother who is a drug addict and has faced jail time due to her drug use. Another boy lives in a neighborhood where he would hear gunshots and police sirens almost everyday. The Baraka program helps all boys lead themselves into the opposite direction of their harmful neighborhood and to become individuals worthy of attending high school.

There was a situation where two boys in Baraka started fighting each other. They were brought to a base where the boys were forced to confront the conflict and reach a solution. One of the two boys refused to establish any reconciliation with the individual he fought. This lead the boy to begin to isolate himself from the other individuals in Baraka because he did not seem to be forming an intimate relationship with the boy he fought and the adult that is forcing the two to fix their problems, this is an example of Erikson’s stage of Intimacy vs Isolation. As their days in Baraka continue to move forward, many of the individuals showed independence, this is Erikson’s Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. The boys are discovering that their behavior is their own. They do not have to live their lives similar to the lifestyle of the gangs that were living back home in their neighborhoods. Each individual showed improvement in their academic actions, as well as their attitude to one another. In Erikson’s theory, there are 8 psychosocial stages of development and Atwone’s current functioning is in the Intimacy vs. Isolation stage. However, some people can take longer to reach this stage such as Atwone. This stage is usually categorized as a stage developed in late adolescent years. Prior to seeing a therapist Antwone was having a self identity crisis. He didn’t know who he was because all his life he didn’t know his parents. He was raised as an orphan by terrible foster parents who constantly abused him verbally and physically. During Antwone’s therapy sessions with Dr. davenport he focused more so on the Why, instead of who? Atwone wanted to know why his mother never came back to claim him, he wanted to understand why he was receiving such harsh treatment in a home where he was supposed to be cared for and looked after? Every question as to why, caused Antwone to loose a sense of self identity. Up until half way into the movie his questions were answered and the development of self identity started to arise. This is what is lead up to the current function stage of intimacy vs.

The film that interested me for this assignment was “Boyz n the Hood”. The movie was about a Los Angeles neighborhood expanding of drug and gang culture, with increasingly tragic results. It was about how one teen had family support to guide him on the right path in life regarding the social problems around him. The other two teens in the film wasn’t as fortunate and fell into the social problems of drugs, violence, and gangs; where one ended up dead.
Boyz N the Hood was a film created to convey an anti-gang message as well as to provide societal members an in-depth look at life in “the hood” so he or she can expand their culturally awareness of identifying societal issues (Stevenson, 1991). Upon the debut of “Boyz N the Hood” violence erupted at theaters across the nation, resulting in multiple shows pulling the film from scheduled showings to alleviate future violent behaviors (Stevenson, 1991). The film profoundly illustrates the realty of the events revealed within the storyline that frequently occur on a daily basis within every impoverish community; however, is overlooked by the individuals who are not directly involved and or affected (Leon-Guerrero, 2016) Children of lower socioeconomic status often are raised in ghetto neighborhoods where they often witness, crime, violence, gang activity, abuse, and drugs (Leon-Guerrero, 2016). Ghetto communities envelop tumultuous cycles of violence and substance abuse creating a pervasive occurrence within the residents of the community. This is prevalent in lower developed communities that unfortunately many children and the youth populace indirectly inherit and sadly conform to, as there are no other means to an end for them (Leon-Guerrero,
John Singleton’s view of social problems in South Central Los Angeles happens in a tale of three friends growing up together. Doughboy and Ricky Baker are half-brothers and have opposite personalities. Ricky is a football player who hopes to win a scholarship and spends most of his time playing football. On the other hand, Doughboy is a young man who looks upon his environment for guidance. He is involved in violence, abusing drugs, and participates in violence. In between is their friend Tre, who actually has a father to teach him what is right from wrong. Furious Styles, who is Tre’s father in the film does everything in his strength to keep his son from becoming another startling statistic. As you can see, it is always important for parents to be a part of their child’s life because it can make a big difference not only in their life but also their child’s future.
John Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace, reveals the many dangers and hardships of adolescence. The main characters, Gene, and Finny, spend their summer together at a boarding school called Devon. The two boys, do everything together, until Gene, the main character, develops a resentful hatred toward his friend Finny. Gene becomes extremely jealous and envious of Finny, which fuels this resentment, and eventually turns deadly. Knowles presents a look at the darker side of adolescence, showing jealousy’s disastrous effects. Gene’s envious thoughts and jealous nature, create an internal enemy, that he must fight. A liberal humanistic critique reveals that Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace, has a self contained meaning, expresses the enhancement of life, and reveals that human nature does not change.
Erickson’s Theory has 8 stages (Schriver, 2011). The following text will give the developmental crisis of each stage and relate it to Shannon’s life personally. In Erikson’s Theory developmental crisis “did not mean an impending catastrophe as much as it meant “a turning point, a crucial period of increased vulnerability and heightened potential”” (Schriver, 2011). The first stage of Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development is Trust vs. mistrust (0-1 year) and its crisis is “in establishing trust” (Schriver, 2011). Shannon had developed trust early on in her life due to the loving, caring, and nurturing home she grew up in. She had a sense of physical comfort which eliminated fear and allowed trust. The second stage is Autonomy vs. shame (1-3 years) and the crisis is “parental restrictions vs. autonomy” (Schriver, 2011). Growing up Shannon started learning to walk at 11 months which is a normal age for children to emerge into that. Due to her parents being supportive, it allowed Shannon to start exploring her curiosities and still be loved while doing so. The third stage is Initiative vs. guilt (3-6 years) and the crisis is “in taking initiative without experiencing guilt” (Schriver, 2011). This again correlates to the supportiveness of Shannon’s parents which allows her to be her own person and encourages her to experience her life in her own way. The fourth stage is Industry vs. inferiority (6-12 years) and the crisis is “in striving for competence” (Schriver, 2011). Shannon had a great group of friends growing up and that gave her the inclusion she needed to feel equal to her peers and not inferior to anyone. The fifth stage is Identity vs. role confusion and the crisis is “uncertainty about the future and the child’s role in it” (Schriver, 2011). At this time in Shannon’s life she had already strengthened her hope (trust), will, purpose, and
Intimacy versus isolation is the sixth stage of Erikson's theory. During this period of time, the major conflict centers on creating an intimate, loving relationships with other people. At the age of twenty-eight Suzy had transform to completely new person. She was happily married with two sons. She met her husband at the age of twenty- two. She stated that her marriage brought her the confidence and happiness that she inquired. Her husband, Rupert Dewey is a lawyer .She live in the big house away from the country, because as a child she stated she felt sheltered by parent. She doesn’t have a nanny. Suzy is a stay at home mom. Suzy has gotten her life back on track and seems happy and content.
The psychosocial stage represented by adolescence, as we can see from Erikson’s model, is the resolution of the conflicts raised by the profusion of role changes in adolescent life. Healthy resolution of these conflicts would mean that the person would be able to adjust to the changing role demands of the period of adolescence while still retaining a strong sense of their own lasting personal identity. If the increasing role demands of adolescence placed too great a stress on the individual, then identity diffusion would result. This means that the individual would become confused about who they were, in view of all the different roles which they seem to be acting

Each stage is regarded by Erikson as a “psychosocial crisis,” which arises and demands resolution before the next stage can be satisfactorily negotiated. Cady loses herself by changing her values and character in the beginning of the film and towards the end of the film she finds self-recognition. The identity stage, in Erikson’s theory, precedes the intimacy stage so there are many similarities and connections between the two. The author will analyze identity and intimacy, which are two of the eight stages in Erikson 's theory that people normally go through in life.
The main subject that is in the film is racism. The one of the two concepts I learned was within a busy city people’s lives collide with one another. Erik Erikson was a developmental psychologist known for his theory on psychosocial development. Unlike other theorists of his time Erikson’s theory focused on human development across the lifespan from birth to late adulthood. Erickson believed that development change occurs through out our lives in eight distinctive stages that emerge in a fixed pattern and are similar for all people. Erickson argued that each stage presents a crisis or conflict which results in either a positive or negative outcome (Feldman). In this essay I will identify incidents in my own life that demonstrate each stage of development according to Erickson that I have lived through. I will also interview my Aunt Tami who will share her experiences for the remainder stages of Erickson’s development that I have not gone through thus far.
