Acceptable work is granted pass or fail depending on the guidelines put forthright. But, there are ways to exploit the grading system fairly and not in a cheating manner. Cheating does not mean an individual is only academically dishonest and uses others’ work to do their own bidding. They can also “cheat themselves” by not doing the standard conformity to excel at what is demanded of the assignment or assessment. By not completing busy work or shorting their own work are both ways they cheat themselves out of potentially their own future. In the article by Robinson and Glanzer, “…they are likely to begin (Cheating) during the middle school years, where students endure significant transitional periods inclusive of maturational and developmental changes, as well as changes within the formal learning environment.” (Tyler 3) Students are exposed to larger class sizes, challenging material; almost every aspect of their prior learning environment is challenged by the new system and the development of ambiguous studying habits is a common occurrence. Not everyone who cheats are bad, they’re around us and for the most part, honest and good-hearted people. Life circumstances don’t provide causation for a person’s habitual statuses of getting through school, but the circumstances highly influence it. Whether they picked the habits up at a prior education system or were never experienced in methodological encoding procedures of how to be an efficient time management person are private affairs not covered exclusively here. That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.
To prosper as individuals, it is essential to control a sense of honesty, in simple hopes of maintaining humane, respectable standards and boundaries. This honesty, however, is often asked of extension, now presumed to mature into a component well known as integrity. Learning, consequently, is inhabited through these expectations of strict dedication and independence. And although learning is accomplished abundantly, there is only a certain extent of upholding this righteous behavior. Though teachers, bosses, parents, or companions may be satisfied with the efforts of their lesser, they fail to realize that the request of integrity has not been fulfilled. Integrity, being the unflawed ability to completely dedicate one’s personally believed morals is a specific, well-rounded trait, difficult to be entirely possessed by a faulty being.
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. Academic knowledge is the basis on which future prosperity, and financial security has been determined. As a consequence, students feel inclined to perform above average in school. Now, as students perform less and less, they sink to obtain good grades by cheating. This method to acquire the desired grades will only harm the student, instead of the imagined result. Prompted by a child’s inability to perform basic tasks throughout his education , academic cheating spawns numerous negative consequences.
But humanity cannot help but cheat, we’re competitive, always seeking to be better than others, and having better grades, a better GPA, a better score on a single test all contributes to this superiority complex. While some individuals work extremely hard for their accomplishments, many others find the modern-day cliché: “work smart not hard” to be more applicable, as it is much easier to copy down information than it is to understand it. A localized example of this is human interaction in Sherwood High School. Because Sherwood High School divides work periods into five one-hour class sessions, it allows individuals in later periods to gain preordained knowledge about an assignment or task beforehand, providing an upper-had at the cost of their academic integrity; the reason this phenomenon occurs so often is attributed to the pressure placed upon students to perform, pressure from peers, parents, siblings, and the schooling system creates a larger emphasis on the grades and results in cheating to achieve desired grades. Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
Students find it challenging to balance school, work and let alone their social life; they turn to cheating as a way to help make their lives more simple.
