Many people can relate to being absent a few days from school and coming back to a ton of work to makeup. Depending on the individual it may take a extended time to complete the work and catch back up. The feeling of falling behind and unsure of the material can lead to stress and even anxiety. Similarly, students in elementary school may feel this way if they advance when they are not ready. Students in elementary school should not be advanced to the next grade level without successfully completing the previous grade.
First of all, not successfully completing the grade level suggests they do not understand or know the information necessary. Many classes in elementary school feed into the next. Each grade level provides a basis for the next course and without retaining the knowledge it will continue to be difficult.

Students will become flustered with all the information they should know but do not. Students will be tied up trying to learn the information that their peers already know to catch up and learning the new information will be put on hold. Putting the new information on hold will cause stress to build up as they try to catch up. Falling behind will set them up for failure resulting in no improvement from the previous grade.
Most importantly, advancing the child may lower their self-esteem if it is too difficult. Advancing a child may seem like an easy fix; however, if a child is not physically ready it will only intensify the situation. A child that is not ready to advance may quickly become overwhelmed. Trying to keep up with the information without the correct basis to understand it will be very challenging. Learning must be enjoyable for kids to provide a positive impression to last the whole education. Bad impressions on children likely are not forgotten easily. A positive learning experience will lead a successful
This means that even students who do not understand the material or gain any knowledge from their classes can be easily passed onto the next grade level. An interview with a teacher from this school district expresses the disappointment the teachers have in the new system. “The students that struggle the entire year, the ones that fail every test, are still forced to move to the next grade level. They aren’t gaining the knowledge they need to move on and grow” states the concerned fifth grade elementary teacher. She continues to explain the stress teachers feel when they are pushing students further than their potential. Students are becoming less aware of the world around them; they don’t develop the knowledge they need to succeed. With such absence of knowledge, naïve citizens are allowing government control over their thoughts. A clear example of this is when teachers are pushing these students from grade to grade, they are simply only learning what the government and school districts want them to learn. This, in turn, affects our future leaders due to our democratic republican way of electing officials. These students grow up into adults who vote for our government and leaders based off the little knowledge they are provided throughout
In addition to holding back a child for not successfully completing their grade could result in low self - esteem. The child might be picked on for not being as smart as others. If a child was held back other students would pursue them as slower than others. The child would as of the children say him or she was. If children begin to call them names such as dumb they child would began to think they were so. Another child could pick on this child that was held back for being the same age as them but in a lower grade. This could result in the child feeling as if no one was there for them. Making the child feel as if everyone has turned their backs on he or she. As a result the child would develop low self - esteem as well as feeling as if they were a hinderance to others.
Examples are toilet training, and learning how to control the body. Kids, who complete this stage will feel secure and confident. Meanwhile those who don’t feel like they aren’t good enough and insecure.
Are teachers enforcing discipline mechanisms in a healthy way for children? Researchers would answer no to this question because of one major factor: removing recess from a child’s school day. In Jessica Lahey’s article, “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most”, she states that “schools continue to take away recess privileges as a penalty for academic or behavioral transgressions”. Many teachers follow this procedure because they assume that they are teaching the child how to act with appropriate behaviors. However, it is a proven fact that eliminating a student’s recess results in a negative outcome. Therefore, recess should not be removed from a child’s school day because this recreation plays a role in their physical health,
Without anyone pushing students to the fullest extent of their comprehension in certain subjects, there will not be enough material for the educator to give a coherent grade, which results in giving a pupil an unearned mark.... ... middle of paper ... ... Instead of encouraging them, they do the opposite. It will give such students “false feedback about their ability,” making them believe that what they are doing is proper, that it is the standard set of skills that everyone has, and that they will succeed in almost anything with the same attitude.
I believe that learning is a journey that both child and educator set out on together. This journey is a privilege that I take seriously, realizing that a child’s early years are a key formative time in their life. I believe that it is during this time that important foundations are being set in place that will not only impact them in the present but will also influence them later on in life.
Some kids are very intelligent but they have bad grades because they don’t read /follow the directions. Sometimes children do the problem without reading the directions thinking they know what to do which is most likely the problems. Teachers will get tired of repeating the directions
There are many roads to be successful in learning, but they all involve developing mindset. Developing the right mindset is a key success for most learning. Carol S.Dweck, the author of " brainology", indentified two diffent mindsets : fixed mindsets and grow mindsets. These impact student 's learning differently. From my point of view, having a growth mindset is the best for success since this belief assists students learn and develop a good self-motivation in goals, efforts, and setbacks.
Since it is not an easy decision to make the child’s parents, school instructors and counselors are all involved in the process. Conversely, there is also social promotion. Social promotion is the practice of moving a child ahead a grade even if they aren’t necessarily ready to be advanced to the next grade, the thought process their being that they will have time to catch up with the other students. Both of these practices are flawed in different ways, but what seems to be more detrimental to the student is grade retention. Jimerson (2001b) is quoted as saying that “grade retention suggests that it is not likely to be effective in remediating academic failure and/or behavioral
However, forcing a child to repeat a grade could cause social and emotional issues. A child will experience low self-esteem, social issues, emotional issues, or they feel they cannot be academically challenged. Children enter school with their peers, some they know and some they get to know. However, a child is who’s retained and denied the ability to be promoted will experience social issues. Therefore, another concern other than academics has risen. The pattern will continue and other domains will be affected. According to Powell cognitive, affective, physical, and social concerns are important to a child’s ability to function and maintain while attending school (Powell, 2010). Therefore, being retained at any grade has an impact on a child. A child is more likely to be retained because of their lack of academic or socioemotional
Flunking students has more disadvantages than advantages. There are many underlined disadvantages of flunking students during early grade school years. One of the disadvantages, of failing elementary school students is the loss of confidence. Children can be very brutal to one another and can
Hindering a student’s performance with a bad grade in the middle of the year can make them give up for the rest of the year. Once a student has received a bad grade they might lose faith in their academic ability. By giving up a student does not reflect their academic ability and their bad grades are not based on what they learned.
This course is beneficial to help students understand that they are going to be successful but only if the
A child's development affects how they learn. All children don't fit the norms of development but not all children should be looked down on because of this. The development of the body and mind leads to the development of skills a child learns in life. Teachers need to help the child expand their skills and the knowledge to do the skills well.
