4-H is the largest positive youth development organization in our country. Looking at all of the bullet points under Effective Community Youth Programs from the module 4 PowerPoint, 4-H possesses every single one. 4-H is about youth learning and developing life skills through hands on learning. To execute the hands on learning process, 4-H uses certified 4-H volunteers as positive role models for the youth to look up to and learn from along with older youth acting as mentors to the younger youth. 4-H gives youth several opportunities to grow into successful young adults and then into successful adults. 4-H teaches essential life skills and leadership through various ways. The 4-H’er that I am thinking of as I write this portion of the reflection is an outstanding example of a 4-H youth involved in the community. She was recently elected as the State 4-H Teen Council President. She is an incredible example of what 4-H is about and how it can shape a young person’s life. She takes on different responsibilities among her peers and her community. She is involved in her school’s student council along with the high school band. She is an afterschool tutor for younger students. She is also a youth representative for her county Extension Council. With the opportunity to be a youth representative on her county Extension Council, she is able to give input on different issues going on in her …show more content…
She was an exceptional leader the entirety of camp. She displayed great leadership as she was the most experienced counselor at camp. She trained the new and inexperienced counselors on common tasks that are done at camp each year. She always had a smile on her face even when walking a mile to the pool in 110-degree heat and humidity. She knew that if she kept things upbeat and exciting that it would take the heat off of everyone’s minds. She is a well-rounded, intelligent, independent leader molded through years of
girls in girl scouts. Low lead a legacy that will be remembered for a long time to come. With her outgoing personality she changed many girls lives as she met her goals and achieved many things. Becoming deaf had little effect on her, for she remained in girl scouting until the very end.
Just a few days prior, the Catalyst Color Guard, the team of which I am currently captain, won the Texas Color Guard Circuit State Championships. We earned the highest score in the 10-year history of our program after an incredibly successful season. What enabled us to succeed this past season was the leadership. As a junior and first lieutenant, I felt more confident in my own leadership skills and experience, and I was better equipped to serve my team this year. Our improved leadership style and work ethic improved our team as a whole. Our score increased with each
The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping-stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences I've had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team.
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
In January of 2018, the Franklin County 4-H Teen Council transpired for the first time in nearly 5 years. The overall mission of the club is simple: 4-Hers working together for the betterment of 4-H, the members, and the community. Some may question, "How will the club accomplish these goals?"
Are teachers enforcing discipline mechanisms in a healthy way for children? Researchers would answer no to this question because of one major factor: removing recess from a child’s school day. In Jessica Lahey’s article, “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most”, she states that “schools continue to take away recess privileges as a penalty for academic or behavioral transgressions”. Many teachers follow this procedure because they assume that they are teaching the child how to act with appropriate behaviors. However, it is a proven fact that eliminating a student’s recess results in a negative outcome. Therefore, recess should not be removed from a child’s school day because this recreation plays a role in their physical health,
The screeching decibels of my alarm clock woke me at five-thirty that morning. Football practice the day before completely destroyed my body leaving my arms and legs almost unmovable. All my strength was used to stand that morning. My brother told me to stop complaining and get ready for school. He was older and always bossed me around. “I don’t want to go to school” I exclaimed! “What are you going to do, sit at home and stay dumb?” He said. That is not a bad idea I thought. I can teach myself. I imagined the possibility of being homeschooled. I knew homeschooling was not an option for me. My mother worked two jobs and was hardly home to check my homework. If it was an option, homeschooling would be my choice. Homeschooling is a better choice than a Public School education. Homeschooling offers
There is a new debate concerning homeschool students and their eligibility to participate in public school’s athletic programs. While some school districts have allowed these students to participate, many other district administrators have created rules and regulation prohibiting these students from participation in any athletic program. A parent’s right to choose what is best for their students intellectual development should not limit the sociological advantages developed through sports participation. With the growing number of students being homeschooled, school districts around the country are going to have no choice and allow homeschool student to participate. If the purpose of the educational system is to develop and prepare the nation’s
The early hominins of Africa were similar to other hominins in gross anatomical features, however, there were differences between the early hominins of Africa and other hominins, such as those found in Asia and other parts of the world as discovered in fossil remains. Not only were there some differences in the anatomical structures, there were also evidentiary differences in their culture and environmental factors in their lives, especially as the species evolved. Below, I will compare some of the differences of the early African hominins to other hominins as well as discuss how they might have lived day to day and show how the evidence supports these findings.
...er to building a brighter future for the next generation, but we have to be positive and stop placing our teenagers in the negative category making them feel like they are nothing, or else they will live up to that label.
During the past few days, many of our friends and family have come to our home to show their love for us and for Arlyn. I have been especially moved by the fact so many of her teachers and principals have shown up and cried with us. I am also touched by the love her young friends had for her. Our memories of this sad time in our lives will therefore not all be bad.
A big question asked amongst people sometimes is “Can a teenager make a difference, and if they do is it positive?” a lot of people just brush it off sometimes and think that because they’re young and don’t have the same experience as some older people, they are bound to make mistakes. This is not always the case, as some teens can make a difference, whether it be in large scale that affects the world or in a smaller scale affecting the community or society. There are a couple kids that have make a difference, although some of the things they have done might be greater compared to others, they still have made a difference in where they live and the people in their communities.
Robert Frost, Wolfgang Mozart, Susan B. Anthony, Theodor Roosevelt, and Serina Williams are all examples of extraordinary people that received an education through homeschooling. A homeschool student will receive their education from one of their parents at home, and through self-teaching. Parents may choose to homeschool their child for a multitude of reasons. Many of which are in regard to parents’ religious beliefs and educational standards. A traditional school may not offer the best education a child can possibly attain, consequently, parents chose to homeschool. Homeschooling allowed these great athletes, leaders, and artists to flourish into the great people they are known as to society. Some
Despite her many obligations, she was great at what she did. She added much intellectual value to work. Seeing how she handle pressures as a young woman, being the same age as me, married, and assistant manager at her job, was very enlightening. Alyssa handled a lot of the rearranging of ideas and allowing my fantasies to become some form of fact.
I have had the luck of being the oldest of my mothers’ seven children, and the pleasure of having three of my own, and one step-son. I’ve spent a lot of time changing diapers, wiping noses, and kissing ouchies. I’ve carried babies on my hip that I’ve seen off to kindergarten, helped dressed for the first school dance, attended their graduation, and even been there when they have had their first baby. I have spent a lot of time analyzing their behavior, moods, or lack thereof. I’ve concluded that there are 4 types of children, I have been blessed with one of each. The 4 different types are: The Superstar, The Kool Kat, The Lil’ Mama or Little Man (depending on the sex of the child), and The Rebel.
