In January of 2018, the Franklin County 4-H Teen Council transpired for the first time in nearly 5 years. The overall mission of the club is simple: 4-Hers working together for the betterment of 4-H, the members, and the community. Some may question, "How will the club accomplish these goals?" For starters, the club's members are granted many opportunities to assist in planning 4-H county and regional events such as 4-H Recognition Night, 4-H Benefit Auction, and the 4-H Ice Cream Stand at the Franklin County Fair. Members are given various opportunities on county, regional, and state levels to expand their leadership skills, confidence, and public speaking skills. The Greenhill Community Center was a multi-service center in Coastal City. Its main purpose was to provide human service programs for various factors throughout life with an intergenerational setting. Some of these included day care, elder programs, music classes, and afterschool programs. It was founded in 1982 and was set up in an old schoolhouse. In short, this community center could use some help.
Over the past few years, Crescent School has made several changes due to stakeholder dissatisfaction. Some of these changes include high school advisory, activities/sports offered, and the graduation ceremony length. The administrative team heard from student and other stakeholders about concerns of the number of activities and sports offered. The team worked together to develop new clubs that students have requested. The time of day the club met was also altered to accommodate additional students participating in the club. Dr. Mork and the administrative team listen to suggestions as they come from stakeholders and do all that is available to implement the change, if deemed possible.
The youth control complex is a form of social control in which the justice system (the prison system) and the socializing and social control institutions (school system) work together to stigmatize, criminalize, and punish inner city youth. Accordingly, these adolescents’ are regarded as deviant and incompetent to participate within U.S. society. On that note, deviance is created based on socially constructed labels of deviances; otherwise, deviance wouldn’t happen without these labels. Once an individual engages in a deviant behavior, it results in a response, often times, some type of punishment from the justice system. “Do I have to go? I mean, it’s not required for me to finish high school or anything. It’s just something you want me to do,” I pleaded with my parents. “Yes you have to go and there’s no way you’re going to get out of it either. It’ll be a good experience for you, and you might even make some new friends,” my father replied. Tomorrow I was going to HOBY, which stands for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. It is specifically for sophomores in high school and I was chosen to be one of the candidates to represent my school for the year twenty fifteen. There are many HOBYs around the United States, but I was going to HOBY Ohio West located at the Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. The seminar started on June fourth and concluded on the seventh. This was a four day event and I wouldn’t see my family for two of the days. I had just turned sixteen in April and I had never stayed more than an hour away from my family for a night or two. It was very nerve-wracking for me, but I had to go no matter what. Little did I know that this experience would make me into the more confident young woman I am today.
Each year, the same basic obstacles are overcome. A budget of roughly $150,000 is raised and spent each year. For every Pow Wow, the Native Community is faced with the problem of not only raising that money, but finding enough people to head the 15 committees. The students from the Native Community who step up to the challenge of putting on this event are all full-time students, carrying full academic loads, while still trying to lead a balanced life with friends, family and other extracurricular interests. The responsibility, long hours and the magnitude of the Pow Wow tends to be daunting, so that not many people are willing to head up the committees. “When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)

In order to gain information for the needs assessment, John Myers, the executive director of Cornerstone Youth Center, was interviewed. He provided information about the biggest issues Cornerstone is facing, and the improvements that can be made to the community as well as Cornerstone. Also, he talked about the strengths of the Center and his hopes for the future of the youth center.
The Greenby Community Center is facing having to do some cutbacks with programs, and the Consultation and Education Department is one of the programs that are going to be cut (Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2012). With Greenby being a mental health center, they are required to have consultation and education as part of the program but are not required to have a full consultation and education department (Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2012). If I were Andy Cutler, the steps I would take would be to do a more thorough evaluation of the program, so that there was data to present to the board members that would show how the program is helping the center. Without a doubt the most meaningful activity I have ever been involved in is 4-H. I have been a member of the Cheerful Champs 4-H club for almost ten years. When you join a 4-H club the members and leaders become your friends and family. 4-H’s mission is to provide a positive environment for kids to grow and succeed through. With such an environment 4-H hopes to give kids confidence and empower them to do whatever they hope to achieve. Empowerment turns kids into leaders and teachers. After being in 4-H so long you learn how to lead and teach the younger members of the club and others in the community. Through 4-H I have gained a family and many qualities that I will cherish for life.
Sci Academy is a coed, charter high school in New Orleans, Louisiana. SA holds classes for pupils in grades 9 through 12. The school enrollment is around 400, and there is a 15:1 student to teacher ratio. The gender mix is evenly divided. Following state assessments, 74 percent of students are proficient in Mathematics and 69 percent are proficient in English. Based on state assessment scores and the school's success at preparing pupils for college, SA is nationally ranked by US News and World Report with a bronze medal. The graduation rate is 76 percent. Health 391 course- Principles of Community Health focused on principals of community health and my class of about twenty junior level students was in charge of planning, facilitating, and evaluating a health fair. We separated into different committees and each committee had specific responsibilities. My committee was in charge of the making the flyers and getting things together. I would like the opportunity of being employed with the MPSD because my family consists of three generations of Lincoln High School graduates. Teaching in the district will allow me to build on the family tradition. I had the pleasure of completing my student teaching placements in the MPSD and I felt included and welcomed from the first day. I would truly enjoy an opportunity to work with the MPSD staff again. Being hired within the district will allow me to continue being a softball coach as well as potentially a volleyball
For hundreds of years it has been recognized that not all learning takes place in the classroom. Students mental and social development also occurs outside the classroom in athletics, music, and clubs. No matter what club the student is involved in, he/she fosters organizational, interpersonal, communication, planning, critical thinking, financing, and evaluation skills. A club gives students the opportunity to combine components of their mental and social development into personal action. These students have opportunities to test their skills and talents in different situations. Students will always work together to set goals, develop action plans for achieving those goals and implement those plans. Doing so, students could develop and maintain working relationships and friendships. The soul of a club is the students, but it also consists of many things that happen behind the scenes.
