Scott’s “202 Checkmates” can capture young girls and fathers because it shows a relationship between father and daughter, her father’s struggle to teach her daughter about the connection between chess and life, and the girl’s hard work to defeat her father The author explains father and daughter bond. Her father was master of chess for her, and she was sure that her daddy will win the game between him and Manny. However, Manny checkmates her father not once but three times. She said, “I couldn’t beat either of them, but I could see just where my father had gone wrong.” (Scott 72). She minds her father moves when they played at home. She starts playing at the park with Manny, and he told her how her moves should be to checkmates her opponents. she became egger because she wanted to beat her father. She struggled hard to know more how to make moves with her chess pieces. For example, students study hard to have a better grade after they figured his or her mistakes. What is in a story if you can’t take something out of it and relate to your everyday life? The book “Typical American” by Gish Jen, gave me something that I never fully, and I probably still don’t, comprehend: foreigners, and their struggles in making a new life in another country. I have been on my share of trips, both domestic and abroad, but was never in a distant land long enough to feel the effects of the unknowing these people felt every day. The manner in which this story was presented has given me a new insight into, not only foreign nationals, but more importantly, how one goes about presenting emotional feeling not just through words, but setting, characterization, point of view, conflict, and theme.

At times it seems strong, as when the narrator is relating her childhood and recounting the good times. Other times it is very strained. All in all the connection between the two seems to be a very real and lifelike account of an actual mother-daughter relationship.
The Major theme in “Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is the forbidden pleasures of freedom for women. This story was written in a time where women had no independence. They lived their lives for their husbands and not for themselves. While reading we see the oppression women faced in marriages, and the guilt they faced when desiring their freedom from the lives that they lived.
The speaker in “To a Daughter Leaving Home” is a parent who seeks to enlighten how special times can be, and how easily it is to loose a daughter. In this case, the special time was when the parent was teaching the 8-year-old daughter how to ride a bike in the park. The hidden meaning tells the reader about the daughter and how quickly her life went until they say goodbye. The poems, poetic devices help create the story into a message.
Romance narrative is a type of writing that usually features a hero and his journey or quest. The hero reaches a transcendent goal through tests or trials. The narrative is often represented as a circle because the story begins with the hero’s goal. It then continues with the hero’s journey through the difficulties that he must overcome to achieve that goal and finishes with the initial goal accomplished. The rifts between mothers and daughters continue to separate them, but as the daughters get older they become more tolerant of their mothers. They learn they do not know everything about their mothers, and the courage their mothers showed during their lives is astounding. As they get older they learn they do not know everything, and that their mothers can still teach them much about life. They grow closer to their mothers and learn to be proud of their heritage and their culture. They acquire the wisdom of understanding, and that is the finest feeling to have in the world.
Kate Chopin made use of every aspect of setting in "The Story of an Hour." Her use of setting permitted the reader to piece together an entire life story of the characters from a two page short story using his own interpretation of the veiled hints she left through description. Each of the different elements of setting, including time, location, social context, and environment, convey all the information that Ms. Chopin chose not to explicitly write. Analyzation of each element leads to a clearer picture of Mrs. Mallard's circumstances and actions, and a fuller understanding of the story itself.
