In a materialistic world like today, one can buy almost anything. With the right amount of money, one can buy the finest cars, houses, and clothes. Due to this ability, people still believe that money can buy everything including happiness. Through the meaning of happiness, wealth, and wealthy figures of today one sees how wealth can never buy happiness. Despite different paths to happiness, the concept for remains universal for all. Celebrities or wealthy figures of today, serve as prime examples of financially fit people who experience sadness despite their wealth. In the Everyday Health Article, 14 Celebrities Who Have Experienced Depression, one sees a list of wealthy figures who suffer from sadness despite their wealth. In this article, Lady Gaga shares her ongoing struggle with depression as she says, “I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety my entire life”(Atshul 5). Based on that quote, one sees that her battle with depressions still exists, despite her fame and fortune. If one could buy happiness, depression would mean nothing more than another bill. If wealth could buy happiness, Lady Gaga and other wealthy figures would no longer suffer from depression. Unfortunately, depression still stands as a problem, meaning even an infinite amount of money cannot buy happiness. The American actor Robert Williams serves as another prime example of why money cannot buy happiness. Despite his multitude of successful movies and net worth of 130 million, Robert Williams still loses his life to depression. Wealth can buy many things, but happiness does not classify as one of those things. Before William’s unfortunate death, he admits this truth in his biography when he states, “ Depression is not a joke!…No amount of money or fame can fix it”(Dougan 211). Money and Happiness are two things that we have all given a lot thought. We put lots of effort into these two things either trying to earn them or trying to increase them. The connection we make between money and happiness is strange because they are two very different concepts. Money is tangible, you can quantify it, and know exactly how much of it you have at any given time. Happiness, on the other hand, is subjective, elusive, has different meanings for different people and despite the efforts of behavioral scientist and psychologist alike, there is no definitive way to measure happiness.
