Eighty percent of smokers began smoking before they turned eighteen (Statistic Brain-Underage Smoking Statistic). Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer in America. Adolescents are smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products more each day. Young people aren’t aware of the effects that smoking has on their body, some know the effects and still smoke to look “cool” or “popular”. The truth is that they are just slowly killing themselves. “Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life” (Shields).
The effects of smoking are very serious and dangerous. Smoking can harm almost every organ in the body. Plus it affects the autoimmune system, bones, blood, hearing, vision and lungs. One in every five deaths in the United States is caused by smoking. Also, smoking can cause cancer of the nose, mouth, larynx (voice box), trachea, esophagus, throat, lungs, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, cervix, bone marrow and blood. It is also known to cause leukemia (Effects of Smoking on Your Health). Smoking is not worth the effects that come with the cartoon. People don’t realize the addiction that is caused by nicotine.
Nicotine is addictive whether the user uses tobacco products or just smokes cigarettes. Addiction is what makes someone continuously smoke even when they are trying to quit. For some people, breaking the cycle is harder than others. Many people don’t know the various methods to quit smoking. When tobacco products are used, nicotine is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. In the matter of ten seconds of entering the body, nicotine reaches the brain. This causes the brain to release adrenaline, creating a buzz of pleasure and energy. The buzz evaporates quickly, leaving behind a tired feeli...

Smoking should never even cross the brain. It is crazy how many people just do it so they can “fit in.” That shouldn’t be an excuse to get lung disease, or to ruin cells in the brain. Do not put the harm of others into your hands. Just ask yourself if you can handle the guilt of knowing that someone who doesn’t smoke has “smoker’s lungs” because they have been around someone who smokes. There are so many people today that die, because they have smoked all their life, or even died from secondhand smoke because their parents or spouse have smoked in front of them. So think twice before lighting a cigarette and taking the first puff, think about what all can happen to the body, once addicted.
