People take drugs, tobacco and alcohol for different reasons and some is a result of their background, for leisure and so forth. These uses pose a threat to the health and well-being of adolescents. Adolescents and young adults in their 20s are at the highest risk for illicit drug use. For some drug users, use that begins in adolescence continues well into adulthood. “Addiction is a developmental disease; the earlier an adolescent begins drug use, the more likely their use will progress to become serious abuse or addiction (Johnston, 2012)”. There for earlier exposure is the major impact in addiction and dependence to some extent. According to (Mackay, 2002), rapid increase in tobacco consumption and its spread around the world represent a great concern to public health both globally and at the national level. Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world and the fourth most common risk factor for disease worldwide; it kills 4.9 million persons per year therefore it weighs heavily on the health care system of countries. Tobacco undermines the wellbeing of populations. The cost of treating tobacco-related illness is very high, not only in the governments but also to individuals and their families. In addition, the diseases and deaths that result from tobacco consumption impose great suffering and grief on the close family of the tobacco user, effects which are exacerbated by poverty. Smoking rates are very high in the community we are living in and there are some implications to the smokers and the people living around the environment so it compelled me to search and find the reasons for these high rates of smoking and how and what can be done to reduce or even stop smoking of tobacco. (Boden, 2010),states that nicotine causes changes to neurotransmitter activity in the brain leading to increased risk of depression but this was viewed as suggestive not definitive. This implies that there is still no assurance that alcohol, tobacco and other drugs lead to depression since it also occurs to non-smokers. ALCOHOL AND DRUG DEPENDENCE Most people who use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs at an early age tend to have much dependence as compared to those who drink or smoke at an older age. Some even cannot do anything without having taken this alcohol or drugs. Another signs is when cannot spend much time without taking them and even start taking more drugs as a way of coping or avoiding the symptoms related to the comedown (Hingson, 2006).
